Hiring a freelancer can be cheaper than adding a full-time employee, but the platform you choose affects the final bill, payment protection, hiring speed, and the amount of screening you must do yourself.

For most small businesses and individuals, Upwork is the strongest all-purpose option. Fiverr works well for quick, clearly defined services, while Toptal is better suited to expensive or business-critical work where screening matters more than price. Design buyers have two specialist choices: 99designs and portfolio-led Contra.

These are the eight best freelance websites to consider in 2026, with the important fees and payment risks included.

Best freelance websites for hiring in 2026

Platform Best for Hiring model Important buyer cost or risk
Upwork General work and ongoing contractors Job proposals or predefined Project Catalog services Marketplace fee of up to 7.99%, plus a $0.99–$14.99 contract initiation fee
Fiverr Fast, fixed-scope services Packaged Gigs, Custom Offers, or Fiverr Pro briefs Regular Fiverr and Fiverr Pro are different services
Toptal High-stakes technical and professional work Curated matching through a client advisor $79 monthly subscription if you proceed with matching
Freelancer.com Competitive bidding and one-off projects Post a project, compare bids, fund milestones 3% of the winning bid or $3 minimum for fixed-price projects
Contra Creative and digital professionals Discover profiles, post jobs, or invite a known freelancer Client platform fees range from $2 to $29 per transaction
99designs Branding and visual design Design contests or direct 1-to-1 Projects Logo contests start at $249 before sales tax
Guru Recurring professional services Quotes, invitations, WorkRooms, and SafePay 2.9% handling fee per invoice
PeoplePerHour Small packaged jobs, particularly in the U.K. and Europe Offers or custom proposals for posted Jobs Escrow can be processed automatically after an invoice becomes overdue

1. Upwork: best overall freelance website

Upwork is the most flexible choice when you do not yet know exactly what type of freelancer you need. You can hire a writer, bookkeeper, developer, virtual assistant, designer, or marketer through the same client dashboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two main ways to hire:

  • Choose Post a job to describe your needs and receive proposals.
  • Browse Project Catalog for predefined services with a stated scope, price, and timeline.

Hourly contracts are useful for ongoing or unpredictable work. Upwork bills logged hours automatically up to the agreed weekly limit. Fixed-price projects use milestones, which you fund before work starts and release after reviewing the work.

What Upwork costs clients

Basic clients may pay a Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99%. Eligible U.S. clients paying by checking account may qualify for a 3% fee. Every new Marketplace or Project Catalog contract also has a separate, non-refundable Contract Initiation Fee of $0.99 to $14.99.

You must complete any required phone and billing-method verification before hiring. Also, moving an Upwork relationship off-platform is not automatically free. The platform’s terms generally require work and payments to stay on Upwork for the first two years unless you use its formal conversion process. The listed Conversion Fee is 13.5% of estimated annual earnings, subject to applicable discounts, with a $1,000 minimum final fee.

Best choice if: you want a broad talent pool, flexible contracts, or a freelancer you may use for months.

2. Fiverr: best for fixed-price services

Fiverr is convenient when you can describe the deliverable in one sentence: edit a 1,000-word article, design a podcast cover, remove a background from 20 images, or set up a basic email sequence.

Freelancers sell packaged services called Gigs. You can compare the included work, delivery time, revisions, and seller reviews before ordering. If a standard package does not fit, ask for a Custom Offer.

Fiverr Pro is a separate hiring experience. Pro clients can use project briefs, live shortlisting, domain-expert sourcing, and project-management services. Pro freelancers are manually vetted, but regular Fiverr sellers are not the same as Pro talent.

Fiverr timing and cancellation issues

After delivery, clients generally have three days to accept the work, request revisions, or extend the review period. Shipping-related Gigs use a 14-day auto-completion period. If an order is at least 24 hours late, the client can cancel without the freelancer’s approval. Once an order is completed, however, cancellation must generally go through Customer Support rather than the Resolution Center.

Fiverr Pro Essential currently has no upfront subscription fee but requires at least $1,000 in annual service orders to maintain eligibility. The Advanced plan is listed at $129 per month.

Best choice if: you need a fast, contained task and want to compare packaged prices instead of reviewing dozens of proposals.

3. Toptal: best for high-stakes work

Toptal is designed for buyers who would rather pay for a curated match than sort through a large open marketplace. It covers software development, design, finance, project management, and business expertise.

You submit your requirements to a client advisor. Toptal then selects and matches talent instead of showing you a conventional list of bids. Its FAQ says it accepts fewer than 3% of applicants.

The screening process can take time. Toptal says matching may take one to three weeks when a suitable expert needs to be fully screened, although some current service pages advertise average matches in under 24 hours for certain categories.

Toptal’s subscription and trial terms

Clients pay a $79 monthly subscription if they proceed with matching. Each new engagement begins with a trial period of up to two weeks. You are not billed for the engagement if you are not satisfied during the trial, but “no-risk trial” should not be interpreted as “no subscription obligation.”

Best choice if: a bad hire could delay a product launch, create security problems, or produce costly financial or strategic mistakes.

4. Freelancer.com: best for competitive bidding

Freelancer.com follows a traditional marketplace model. You post a project, receive bids, choose a freelancer, and fund payments through Milestone Payments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is useful for one-off development, data entry, marketing, design, and research assignments. The large bid pool can expose you to competitive prices, but it also means more screening work. The lowest bid is not necessarily the lowest total cost if the freelancer needs extensive correction.

Freelancer.com fees and payment protection

Posting is free. For fixed-price work, the client fee is 3% of the winning bid or $3, whichever is greater. Hourly projects incur a 3% fee on each payment.

Use Milestone Payments when payment protection matters. Direct transfers are not eligible for the platform’s Dispute Resolution Service. To cancel an unfunded or not-yet-accepted milestone, open the project, select the Payments tab, and choose Cancel beside the milestone. Once a milestone is released, the money may not be recoverable.

Paid arbitration for a milestone dispute costs $5 or 5%, whichever is greater; the fee is refunded to the winner.

Best choice if: you are comfortable comparing bids and want a broad marketplace for a defined project.

5. Contra: best for portfolio-led creative hiring

Contra is a good fit when the freelancer’s portfolio matters more than their ability to win a crowded bidding contest. It is especially useful for brand designers, developers, marketers, writers, and other digital professionals.

You can browse the Discover network, post a job opportunity, or invite a particular independent to a project. Job posting is free, while the optional Boost your job feature costs $199 for 30 days.

Contra is not fee-free for clients

“Commission-free” primarily describes what freelancers retain. Clients still pay platform and payment-processing fees. For non-Pro talent, current platform fees are $2, $5, $10, or $29 per transaction, depending on payment size. Domestic credit-card processing is 2.9% plus $0.30. ACH costs 0.8%, capped at $5, but ACH requires eligibility approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is important when comparing Contra with a direct bank transfer. A freelancer’s advertised rate may not equal your final checkout amount.

Best choice if: you already know the type of creative professional you want and prefer reviewing portfolios to sorting through anonymous bids.

6. 99designs: best for branding and design contests

99designs specializes in logos, brand identity, packaging, illustration, web design, and related visual work. It offers more than contests: you can use Find a designer or commission a direct 1-to-1 Project.

A contest gives multiple designers the same brief and lets you compare concepts. A direct project is usually more efficient when you already have a designer whose style matches your brand.

99designs pricing

Logo contests currently start at $249, before sales tax. The listed Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages cost $249, $399, $799, and $1,050. Contest packages advertise approximate numbers of concepts, not a guaranteed number of usable final designs.

For a 1-to-1 Project, the client pays a fixed 5% platform fee, automatically included in the quote. Check the complete quote and tax before comparing it with a designer’s direct rate.

Best choice if: you need a logo or visual identity and want either a structured design competition or a specialist direct commission.

7. Guru: best for recurring professional services

Guru is built around ongoing client-freelancer relationships. Posting, searching, and hiring are free, and each engagement creates a dedicated WorkRoom for communication, files, agreements, and payments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its SafePay system is optional but important if you want its SafePay-based arbitration protection. The freelancer sets a minimum SafePay balance in the Agreement. You fund that balance, the freelancer submits work, and you release the funds after review.

Guru charges a 2.9% handling fee on each invoice. eCheck or wire-transfer payments receive 100% cashback on that handling fee. Direct invoice payments do not receive SafePay dispute protection.

If a disagreement occurs while funds remain in SafePay, either party can request arbitration. Guru lists the fee as $25 or 5% of the SafePay balance, whichever is greater.

Best choice if: you expect recurring work and want a central WorkRoom rather than a marketplace designed only for one-off orders.

8. PeoplePerHour: best for small packaged jobs

PeoplePerHour is useful for short, clearly defined assignments, particularly for buyers working with freelancers in the U.K. and Europe. Its packaged services are called Offers, replacing the older “Hourlies” terminology still used in some outdated guides.

An Offer is a fixed-price service intended to be delivered within no more than five days after the freelancer receives the requirements. For a custom project, post a Job and assess the resulting Proposals.

PeoplePerHour escrow rules

Accepted proposals and Offer purchases require money to be placed in Escrow. Keep your messages and instructions in the platform’s WorkStream; those records can matter if the platform mediates a dispute.

Do not approve an invoice or release escrow until you have checked the complete deliverable. PeoplePerHour says standard refund procedures are unavailable once funds leave escrow. It also says overdue invoices can be auto-processed after seven days for Offers and 15 days for Projects. Buyers have seven days to raise a dispute after an invoice is issued.

Best choice if: you want to purchase a small, packaged service or work in a U.K./Europe-oriented freelance marketplace.

How to choose the right freelance platform

  1. Define the work before comparing websites. A logo, a 20-hour bookkeeping assignment, and a six-month software build need different hiring models.
  2. Decide whether you want proposals or packages. Use Upwork or Freelancer.com for proposals. Use Fiverr or PeoplePerHour when a packaged service describes the job accurately.
  3. Put a value on screening time. Toptal costs more but handles more vetting. Open marketplaces may offer lower rates but require you to review portfolios, references, tests, and proposals.
  4. Calculate the checkout cost. Include platform fees, payment-processing fees, taxes, subscriptions, initiation fees, and any required minimums.
  5. Use protected payment systems. Fund Upwork milestones, Freelancer.com milestones, PeoplePerHour escrow, or Guru SafePay when you need a documented release and dispute process.
  6. Start with a paid test or small milestone. A $100–$300 trial assignment can reveal communication and quality problems before you commit to a larger contract.

A practical freelancer-hiring checklist

  • Write the exact deliverable, file format, deadline, and number of revisions.
  • State what the freelancer must provide and what you will provide, such as brand assets, login access, or source data.
  • Ask candidates for one relevant example rather than a generic portfolio.
  • Set acceptance criteria before work begins.
  • Break larger projects into milestones that produce usable outputs.
  • Do not release funds just because a freelancer has uploaded an incomplete delivery.
  • Keep scope changes in the platform’s written record.
  • Compare the final platform charge with the freelancer’s quoted rate before accepting.

FAQ

What is the best freelance website for most small businesses?

Upwork is the strongest general-purpose choice because it supports hourly contracts, fixed-price milestones, job proposals, and predefined Project Catalog services. Fiverr may be simpler for a one-time, clearly packaged task.

Which freelance website has the best freelancers?

There is no universal ranking. Toptal applies the most selective published screening standard, accepting fewer than 3% of applicants, while Upwork, Fiverr Pro, Contra, 99designs, and the other platforms can be excellent when you evaluate relevant work and references carefully.

Is it cheaper to hire through a freelance website?

The freelancer’s rate may be lower than the total cost of an employee, but platforms add fees. For example, Upwork’s Basic client fee can be up to 7.99%, Freelancer.com charges 3% or $3 minimum on fixed-price awards, and Contra charges platform and payment-processing fees to clients.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I avoid losing money when hiring a freelancer?

Use the platform’s protected payment process, begin with a small milestone, define acceptance criteria in writing, keep communications in the platform, and inspect the complete deliverable before releasing escrow or milestone funds.

The Bottom Line

Upwork is the best all-around option for most people hiring freelancers, particularly for ongoing work or projects that need flexible milestones. Choose Fiverr or PeoplePerHour for small packaged services, Toptal for high-stakes specialist work, 99designs for branding, Contra for portfolio-led creative hiring, Freelancer.com for competitive bidding, and Guru for recurring work with a WorkRoom.

Whichever site you use, compare the final checkout cost—not just the freelancer’s headline rate—and do not release protected funds until the agreed deliverable passes your review.
