For a genuinely free website in South Africa, Cloudflare Pages is the strongest fit for most static sites; Netlify and GitHub Pages are good alternatives for Git-based projects. These services host static files, not a conventional WordPress site with PHP, MySQL and email. If you need those features, a free trial or money-back guarantee is not free-forever hosting.

“Free” here means the hosting itself has a permanent free tier. It does not necessarily include a custom domain, business email, database, backups or paid third-party services. This comparison was checked against the cited plan information on August 18, 2026; limits and terms can change.

Which free host should you choose?

Option Free status Site type Custom domain and SSL Database Best for Main limitation
Cloudflare Pages Permanent free plan Static sites; additional functionality requires separate services or technical setup Custom domains and SSL listed on the plan page No conventional PHP/MySQL hosting Static portfolios, landing pages and documentation Free-plan build and file limits; not cPanel hosting
Netlify Free plan listed at $0 forever Static and frontend projects, with features such as forms and functions subject to plan limits Custom domains with SSL listed Not conventional PHP/MySQL hosting Git deployments, previews and frontend projects 300 monthly credits; usage varies by feature
GitHub Pages Available with GitHub Free for public repositories Static HTML, CSS and JavaScript Not stated in the cited overview No Developer portfolios, project pages and documentation Commercial-use restrictions apply to certain sites
InfinityFree, AwardSpace or Freehostia Not established from current authoritative plan details Potential PHP/shared-hosting options; verify before signup Not stated Not stated Only small experiments after checking current terms Current availability and limits are unverified
Cloud free tiers such as Oracle Cloud Terms and availability not established here Potentially flexible, but self-managed Depends on configuration Depends on configuration Technical users comfortable administering a server Requires security, updates, billing and capacity management
Paid-host trial or refund period Temporary or pay-first; not free forever Often conventional hosting, depending on provider Check provider terms Varies Testing a paid hosting setup temporarily Costs can begin after the trial or refund window

These options are not interchangeable: static hosting serves prebuilt files, while WordPress and many web apps need a server-side runtime and database. A South Africa-focused comparison page may list trials alongside free plans, so check the provider’s own terms before relying on a “free” label (HostAdvice’s South Africa comparison).

1. Cloudflare Pages: best overall for static sites

Cloudflare Pages is the clearest choice if your site consists of static files: for example, a portfolio, campaign page, restaurant menu, documentation site or blog generated from Markdown. Its product page lists a free plan with unlimited sites, static requests and bandwidth, plus custom domains and SSL (Cloudflare Pages).

The free plan is not without limits. Cloudflare’s documentation lists 500 builds per month, one concurrent build, a maximum of 20,000 files per site and a 25 MiB maximum size for an individual asset (Pages limits). Those limits matter most for build-heavy workflows or sites with many or unusually large files.

Cloudflare’s wider network can serve content through nearby data centres, but that does not establish that a particular project’s origin is in South Africa. Cloudflare describes its network and free DNS, CDN, SSL and DDoS features on its free plan page. Neither Pages nor the general free plan is a substitute for conventional PHP/MySQL hosting or a mailbox service.

2. Netlify: best for Git deployments and previews

Netlify suits developers and teams who want to deploy from Git or an API and review deploy previews. Its pricing page lists a $0-forever free plan with custom domains and SSL, a global CDN, unlimited deploy previews, and a 300-credit monthly allowance (Netlify pricing).

Credits are used across features such as production deploys, functions, form submissions, bandwidth and web requests. The allowance is therefore not equivalent to unlimited hosting: check usage and billing settings, particularly before enabling paid services. Netlify is also not the usual choice for someone expecting cPanel, PHP, MySQL and included email.

3. GitHub Pages: best for project and developer sites

GitHub Pages publishes static HTML, CSS and JavaScript from a GitHub repository. GitHub documents availability with GitHub Free for public repositories; private-repository Pages access depends on the GitHub plan (What is GitHub Pages?). It is a natural fit for documentation, open-source projects and a developer portfolio built through a repository workflow.

It does not run PHP or provide a database. GitHub also says Pages is not intended for sites primarily facilitating commercial transactions or commercial SaaS; review its usage limits and restrictions before using it for a business. The cited overview does not establish custom-domain or SSL details, so confirm the current documentation for your setup.

4–6. Free PHP hosting: verify the provider before relying on it

InfinityFree, AwardSpace and Freehostia are names that appear in free-hosting discussions, but the available current evidence does not establish their present free-plan terms, signup availability in South Africa, storage, traffic, database limits, SSL, backups or inactivity rules. They cannot responsibly be ranked as verified recommendations on that basis.

If you are considering one for a learning project, confirm from the provider’s own current plan and acceptable-use pages that the service is free forever, signup is open to South African users, and the exact PHP version, database, custom-domain, HTTPS, email and backup features you need are included. Treat an unverified free shared host as disposable testing infrastructure, not the sole home for a business site or customer data.

7. Cloud free tiers: an option for server administrators

A cloud free tier can give a technically capable user more control than a static host, but it is not a beginner-friendly shared-hosting plan. You may need to configure Linux, SSH access, firewall rules, web-server software, updates and security yourself. Account eligibility, regional capacity, quotas and billing rules can vary; the current Oracle terms were not established here, so check the provider’s official offer before creating a server.

Cloud hosting also shifts responsibility: a misconfigured server can expose data or services, and a free allowance should not be assumed to provide support, backups or guaranteed capacity. Choose this route only if you can maintain the system and understand the billing controls.

8. A hosting trial or money-back period: useful, but not free-forever

If you need WordPress or conventional hosting temporarily, a clearly labelled trial or refund period may let you evaluate it. It does not meet a strict zero-cost, ongoing-hosting requirement. A money-back guarantee requires payment first, and a trial can end or convert to a paid service under its terms.

Hostinger explicitly says it does not offer free hosting plans; it instead offers a 30-day money-back guarantee (Hostinger support). A South Africa comparison listing multiple providers as “free” also includes trial and guarantee offers, which is why the provider’s own checkout and terms matter (HostAdvice).

Match the hosting to your website

  • Portfolio, CV, menu or landing page: Use Cloudflare Pages, Netlify or GitHub Pages if a static site meets your needs.
  • Documentation or open-source project: GitHub Pages is a practical repository-based option; check its use restrictions.
  • Business landing page: A static host can work if you have a plan for forms, email and other external services. A custom domain alone does not provide those services.
  • WordPress, PHP or a database-backed app: Look for a verified host that supports the needed runtime and database. A free static host is not a WordPress replacement.
  • Online store, bookings or sensitive customer information: Prefer a paid service with suitable support, backups, security practices and terms. Do not make an unverified free host the sole production platform.
  • Business email: Arrange a separate mailbox service or a hosting plan that explicitly includes it. DNS and hosting do not automatically create an address such as [email protected].

What “free” does—and does not—cover

A free hosting tier may still leave you paying for a domain, business email, forms, a database, backups, higher usage, premium templates or support. A provider subdomain is not ownership of a .co.za domain; domain registration and renewal are separate costs. Check both the introductory and renewal terms before buying a domain or moving to a paid plan.

Static platforms can rely on external services for forms, authentication, search, comments, uploads, payments or server-side rendering. Each service brings its own quotas, privacy terms and possible charges. If you collect personal or payment data, assess those services and their data handling rather than assuming the hosting choice covers them.

Deployment history or repository history is not necessarily a full account backup. Keep a separate copy of source code, media, configuration and DNS records. For database or mailbox content, confirm what can be backed up and restored before depending on a provider.

Does a free host have a South African server?

A service targeting South African users is not proof of a South African data centre. Company location, local billing, support availability, data-centre location and CDN edge presence are separate facts. Cloudflare documents a global network of data centres and nearby routing, but that does not prove the origin for an individual Pages project is in South Africa (Cloudflare network and free plan).

No independently measured South African latency or uptime figures are established for the options above, so this comparison does not rank them by speed or reliability. If local data residency, support or contractual uptime is important, verify it directly with the provider rather than inferring it from a South Africa-labelled page.

How to connect a .co.za domain

  1. Register a .co.za domain with a registrar, or confirm that you already control its account. Registration and renewal are separate from free hosting.
  2. Add the domain in the hosting platform’s dashboard and follow its current instructions for the apex domain and any www subdomain.
  3. Copy the exact DNS records the platform provides. Record types and values vary by provider, so do not reuse DNS instructions from another host.
  4. Enter those records in the registrar’s DNS controls. Keep access to the registrar account even if you later change hosting providers.
  5. Allow time for DNS changes to take effect, then check that both the apex domain and www address resolve as intended.
  6. Confirm HTTPS works and that visitors are sent to the preferred version of the domain.

Connecting a domain does not add email hosting. Configure mail records and a mailbox provider separately if you need domain-based email.

When paying for hosting is the sensible choice

Free hosting is often a poor trade when the cost of downtime, lost data or missing support is greater than the hosting bill. Consider paid hosting if you need WordPress, PHP/MySQL, a mailbox, managed backups, human support, contractual uptime, predictable capacity or a dependable platform for sales and bookings. Compare the full renewal price and included features, not just a promotional first term.

South African providers such as xneelo and Afrihost are potential conventional-hosting alternatives, but their current prices, data-centre locations, backups, email inclusions and renewal terms are not established here. Verify those details directly before choosing one.
