There is no single best business bank account for every online seller. The right choice depends on how you receive payouts, pay suppliers, manage reserves, reconcile sales, and handle cash or international transfers. These eight providers are a useful shortlist for U.S. e-commerce businesses, but some are financial technology platforms rather than banks; check who actually holds deposits and what protections apply before opening an account.
How to choose a business account for an e-commerce business
Start with your actual money flows—not a headline rate or a feature list. Marketplace and processor payouts may arrive on a different schedule from inventory invoices, payroll, taxes, refunds, and chargebacks. Compare the full fee schedule and confirm that the account supports your sales channels and bookkeeping workflow.
- Fees and limits: Review monthly charges, minimums, ACH and wire fees, cash-deposit costs, and transaction limits that could matter as sales grow.
- Cash-flow tools: Check transfer timing, payment scheduling, reserve or subaccount features, and whether you need working capital. Financing has separate eligibility and underwriting.
- Connections: Verify support for your specific marketplace, processor, and accounting software. An integration listing alone does not establish that sales, fees, refunds, and transfers will reconcile the way your books require.
- Yield: Compare the rate tiers and the balance, plan, or activity requirements attached to them. Rates and qualifications can change, so confirm current terms directly with the provider.
- Access and service: Consider whether you need branches, cash deposits, checks, ATM access, dedicated support, or permissions for employees and bookkeepers. Digital-first services may not suit cash-heavy businesses or owners who want in-person help.
- Geography and currency: Cross-border sellers should check supported currencies, international payment rails, foreign-exchange charges, and company and owner eligibility. A U.S. account may require a U.S.-registered business and U.S. operations.
- Deposit protection: Identify the bank holding the funds and understand any pass-through or sweep arrangement and its conditions. Do not assume a fintech account or investment product is itself an FDIC-insured bank deposit.
The eight options below reflect categories in Fit Small Business’s editorial roundup, which says it considered software compatibility and features such as checking, APY, cash management, debit cards, wires, and payment services. Those categories are a starting point for comparison, not a guarantee that an account is best for your business. See the roundup and its provider descriptions.
Eight accounts to compare
| Provider | Potential fit | What to examine before applying |
|---|---|---|
| Grasshopper | Digital-first banking with interest, cash management, and financing options. | Compare current yield and cash-management features with the access and lending services your business needs. Check applicable terms and eligibility. |
| Bluevine | High-yield checking, transaction capacity, and business-software connections. | Check which plan and activity requirements apply to the advertised yield and features. Confirm current transaction terms and that the integrations cover your reconciliation needs. |
| Relay | Organizing cash across subaccounts, team cards, budgets, and bookkeeping. | See whether the current account and plan limits accommodate the number of balances and team permissions you need. Separate balances can help earmark money for taxes, inventory, advertising, and operating expenses. |
| Mercury | Digital-first operations, automation, and tools aimed at scaling companies. | Eligibility is not universal. Review the current company, operations, address, owner-document, and geography requirements before applying. |
| Found | Business finances with built-in bookkeeping, tax tools, and expense management. | Compare the convenience of integrated tools with the depth of your accounting needs and whether you need business lending. |
| Axos | An online seller seeking bank services alongside digital account access. | Compare the specific account’s fees, access, services, and lending options with fintech alternatives; do not assume every service is included in every account. |
| North One | Budgeting with subaccounts and e-commerce connections. | Verify that the marketplaces, processors, and accounting tools you use are currently supported, and confirm what each connection does. |
| Novo | A small online retailer seeking digital checking and business integrations. | Read the current fee schedule and transaction and transfer conditions, then confirm that integrations match your sales-channel mix. |
Provider features, fees, rates, limits, and eligibility are subject to change. Review the account agreement and official disclosures for the specific product you intend to open rather than relying on a category label such as “high-yield” or “unlimited.”

When Shopify Balance may make sense
Shopify Balance is an adjacent option for eligible U.S. merchants using Shopify Payments, not one of the eight accounts above. Shopify describes it as a “financial account,” not a bank account. Its Balance information page says standard Basic, Shopify, and Advanced merchants generally receive most payouts within one to three business days, with a stated maximum of five business days; payout timing can change.
Shopify also describes conditions for pass-through deposit insurance. The stated FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category; coverage depends on the applicable structure and requirements. Check Shopify’s current disclosures to understand where funds are held and whether you meet the conditions.

What to check if you are considering Mercury
Mercury’s current eligibility page says a company must be formed and registered in the U.S. or a U.S. territory, have existing or planned U.S. operations, and provide a principal business address. Applicants need formation documents, an IRS EIN document, and identification for a person with operating control and owners holding at least 25%. Mercury also says some founders or financial controllers in listed geographies are not supported. These are application requirements, not a promise of approval; consult Mercury’s eligibility information for its current rules.

- Map deposits and outflows. List the marketplaces and processors that send you money, how often suppliers and staff need to be paid, and how much you want held back for refunds, chargebacks, taxes, and inventory.
- Eliminate accounts that do not fit your operations. Confirm supported business type and geography, required access to cash or branches, payment rails, and team permissions.
- Compare the complete costs. Read the current fee schedule for monthly charges, minimums, transfers, wires, cash handling, and activity limits. If comparing rates, include every condition needed to qualify.
- Test the bookkeeping workflow on paper. Verify that your exact sales channels and accounting tools connect, and establish how payouts, fees, refunds, and transfers will appear in your books.
- Check the institution and protection structure. Confirm the deposit-holding bank, how any pass-through or sweep coverage works, and how your expected balances relate to applicable insurance limits.
