In 2024, several SUV models had either unusually high remaining inventory or documented discounts from MSRP—but that does not prove every dealer was eager to sell, and it does not show that any new 2024 examples remain available today. The examples below are historical U.S. market evidence, not a current shopping list or a promise of savings. Check local stock and get a written, itemized quote before making a decision.
What “dealers are desperate” really means
Inventory and discount data can identify models that may have given shoppers negotiating room; they cannot establish a salesperson’s motivation or guarantee a particular buyer a discount. Supply also varied sharply by brand. Cox Automotive counted 2.66 million available unsold new vehicles in the United States on January 1, 2024—about 50% more than a year earlier, with 70 days of supply—but said Toyota and Honda were among the major automakers with the lowest inventory. The count included dealer-lot vehicles and some vehicles in transit. Cox Automotive’s January 18, 2024 report is a dated market snapshot, not evidence of current availability.
Cars Commerce reported that Jeep, Ram, and Dodge averaged 131 days of unsold inventory in September 2024, compared with a 72-day market average. That points to brand-level inventory pressure and incentives at the time, not guaranteed discounts on every SUV from those brands. Cars Commerce’s September 2024 report also noted that Toyota and Honda continued to face supply constraints.

Counts and days of supply are from CarEdge’s September 2024 inventory analysis. A high days-of-supply figure can signal that stock was moving more slowly relative to supply, but it does not establish the discount on a specific vehicle.
Four SUVs with documented average transaction savings
Edmunds analyzed September 2024 transactions and reported the following average prices paid against average MSRP. The percentage is an average for that period, not a guaranteed dealer discount or an estimate of today’s value.

These figures come from the AP-distributed Edmunds analysis of September 2024 transactions. The Ascent’s discount was the largest of these four averages; that alone does not make it the best financial choice for a particular household.
GMC Terrain: weigh the discount against the redesign
Edmunds noted that the 2025 GMC Terrain was redesigned and improved. A lower price on a 2024 Terrain therefore needs to be weighed against the updates in the successor model. Verify the equipment and model-year differences on the specific vehicles you are comparing rather than assuming the older one has the same features.

Ford Edge: account for its life-cycle context
Edmunds described the 2024 Edge as likely near the end of its life cycle. That was a period-specific observation, not a current availability or support guarantee. If considering an older model year, compare the actual price, equipment, and ownership terms with alternatives before treating a discount as a bargain.
Subaru Ascent: discount is only one part of the fit
Edmunds editors, in the AP-distributed article, praised the Ascent’s standard all-wheel drive, useful technology, and build quality, while identifying a tight third-row seat and loud highway cabin as drawbacks. Those trade-offs matter if the third row or quiet long-distance travel is central to your needs.

How to judge a 2024 SUV deal now
The inventory and transaction figures above describe 2024 conditions. They do not verify that a new, untitled 2024 SUV remains at a dealer in October 2026, or what one would cost. If you find a listing, use current local information and compare the complete cost rather than relying on an old average or advertised discount.
- Confirm that the vehicle is available. Ask the dealer for the VIN and written confirmation that the specific vehicle can be purchased. A listing alone may not establish that it is still in stock.
- Get an itemized out-the-door quote. Separate the vehicle price, dealer-installed options, fees, taxes, and registration. Compare quotes on the same basis.
- Separate discounts from financing. Ask which savings are dealer discounts and which require a manufacturer incentive or a particular financing offer. Compare the total borrowing cost and terms, not only the monthly payment.
- Compare the exact model years and equipment. Check official specifications and the vehicle’s window sticker for the features that matter to you. This is especially important when comparing a 2024 model with a redesigned successor.
- Confirm the vehicle’s status and warranty terms. Ask whether it is genuinely new and untitled or was used as a demonstrator or pre-registered unit. Get the warranty start date and applicable terms in writing.
- Evaluate the vehicle for your use. Consider passenger and cargo needs, driving conditions, and the specific trim and equipment—not just the size of the discount from MSRP.
Edmunds’ 2024 advice, reproduced by AP, was to look for opportunities near month-end and especially year-end, when dealers may be more motivated. Treat that as a possible timing consideration, not a reason to rush or a guarantee of a lower price; the written quote and total cost are what you can compare.

Why the exact “eight” cannot be treated as a definitive ranking
The historical evidence supports six high-inventory examples and four models with transaction averages, but it does not establish which exact eight vehicles an earlier article title intended. The two groups use different measures—remaining inventory versus average transaction savings—so combining them would create an arbitrary list, not a ranked set of the eight most discounted SUVs. CarEdge’s broader top-ten list also included pickups and a minivan, which are not SUVs.
Cars Commerce later reported that dealers averaged 2.3 million new cars per month in 2024, 32% more than in 2023 and nearly double 2022 inventory, with vehicles averaging 70 days live.
