7 Tips to Save Money on Buying a New Gadget

The cheapest gadget is not always the best deal. Use these seven checks to compare real costs, older and refurbished models, trade-ins and buyer protections.

The best gadget deal is the lowest total cost for a device that meets your needs—not the biggest discount on the screen. Set your requirements first, compare the exact model and checkout cost, and count warranty, returns and ongoing expenses alongside the price.

Start with what the gadget must do

Before browsing, write down the job the device needs to handle, the minimum specifications that will do it, how long you expect to keep it and the most you can spend in total. Set both a minimum and a target specification; a single preferred model can push you toward paying for features you will not use.

  • Phone: Check storage, battery life, camera needs, software support and whether you need an unlocked model.
  • Laptop: Confirm that it runs your required software and has adequate memory, storage, ports and screen size.
  • Tablet: Check stylus and keyboard compatibility, cellular needs and app availability.
  • Headphones: Prioritize the features you will use, such as comfort, noise cancellation or microphone quality.
  • Smart-home device: Verify platform and hub compatibility, subscription fees and privacy settings.

Ask what is actually wrong with the device you have now. If a battery replacement, repair, accessory or software cleanup would solve the problem, that may cost less than replacing the whole product. A new model is worth paying more for when a specific improvement—such as a needed port, longer support, better battery life or compatibility—matters to you.

Compare exact models and all-in costs

Compare model numbers, not just product-family names. Capacity, memory, cellular connectivity, carrier lock, included accessories, condition, seller and warranty can all differ between listings that look nearly identical. The FTC recommends checking product details and accounting for shipping, taxes and other fees when shopping online: FTC online-shopping guidance.

Use this estimate before deciding which listing is cheaper:

Device price + tax + shipping + required accessories + activation or setup fees + planned subscription costs − verified discounts − realistic trade-in credit = estimated cost.

A low sticker price can disappear if the configuration has too little storage, needs a proprietary charger or keyboard, requires a service plan, or comes with a short return period. Write down the model number and included items as you compare options.

Use a price match only when the terms fit

A price match is most useful when the products are identical, the competing item is in stock and the competitor qualifies under the store’s policy. Check whether the lower price comes from a marketplace seller, coupon, clearance listing, bundle or financing offer; these can be excluded. Best Buy’s U.S. policy, for example, excludes various marketplace, open-box, refurbished, clearance, bundle and financing offers, among others. Read the current Best Buy price-match policy before relying on a match.

Consider older, open-box and refurbished devices

You may not need the newest release. A previous-generation device can be a better value if it meets your needs and has enough remaining software and security support. Check the manufacturer’s policy for the exact model rather than assuming an older device will keep receiving updates.

Condition labels are not interchangeable: “open-box,” “refurbished,” “certified refurbished,” “pre-owned” and “clearance” can mean different things at different sellers. The FTC advises reading the full description and seller terms, especially when a listing uses labels such as refurbished or close-out. Consumer Reports likewise notes that refurbishment practices and warranty periods vary by seller; see its refurbished-electronics guidance.

Check the protections and condition, not just the label

  • Ask whether the battery was replaced or has a stated health standard.
  • Check what the condition grade means and whether the charger, cable, stylus, remote or adapters are included.
  • For phones and cellular devices, verify carrier compatibility, lock status and activation status.
  • Confirm warranty length, who provides it, the return deadline, return-shipping costs and any restocking fee.
  • Ask whether replacement parts are genuine or compatible, and whether that is specified.
  • Check remaining operating-system and security support.

Manufacturer programs can offer clearer terms, but their claims apply to their own products and policies. Apple says its Certified Refurbished products undergo functional testing, may include genuine replacement parts and include a one-year limited warranty; Apple advertises savings of up to 15%, though inventory and actual savings vary. Its refurbished store and program details describe the offer. Samsung says its U.S. Certified Re-Newed phones have certified new batteries, current software, genuine Samsung parts where needed and a one-year limited manufacturer warranty; returns are subject to its policy. Check the Samsung Certified Re-Newed terms for current details.

Be cautious if the discount is small, the battery is difficult to replace, the warranty is much shorter than for a new unit, the device is near the end of support, or you need guaranteed accessories or pristine condition. “Certified” is useful only when you have read what that seller actually guarantees.

Track the price instead of trusting a sale label

If the purchase can wait, identify the exact model, record prices at reputable sellers, set a target price and use a price alert or price-history tool where available. Compare the listing’s actual model and condition when an alert arrives; it may point to a marketplace seller, a different capacity, a used unit or a coupon with conditions.

A retailer’s claimed former price does not show what the product usually sells for. Nor is any one shopping event guaranteed to have the lowest price: timing, stock and configuration matter. Waiting makes less sense if your current device is broken or unsafe, you need the product now, or the configuration you want is becoming scarce. Apple’s U.S. policy is one example of limited price protection: it says customers may request a refund or credit for a price reduction on an Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days after delivery, subject to exclusions such as limited-time sales events. See Apple’s U.S. store policies for terms.

Compare trade-in credit with selling or keeping your old device

A trade-in is convenient, but the estimate is not always the final credit. Compare the offer with what you might receive from a private sale after marketplace fees, shipping, insurance, time and the risk of disputes or fraud. Keeping an older device as a backup may be more useful than either option.

Read the trade-in conditions before counting the credit toward your budget. Samsung’s terms illustrate possible requirements: a device may need to power on, hold a charge and have a functioning display; locks and accounts must be removed; and the device must arrive by the deadline. An offer can be reduced or charged back if inspection finds that it does not qualify. Review the current Samsung trade-in terms rather than assuming an estimate is guaranteed.

Before handing over a device

  1. Back up photos, messages and authenticator data.
  2. Sign out of Apple, Google, Samsung and other accounts, and disable Find My or other activation locks.
  3. Remove physical SIM cards and handle eSIM information as appropriate for your next device.
  4. Factory-reset the device.
  5. Photograph its condition and serial number; keep shipping tracking and proof of acceptance.
  6. Confirm whether the value is estimated or guaranteed, and note the shipment deadline.

Count the full cost of financing, bundles and subscriptions

A monthly payment is a way to spread a cost, not proof that the gadget is cheaper. Add the down payment, every installment, interest or fees, required plan costs, activation charges, insurance and subscriptions to see the total commitment. A “free” phone may depend on a multi-year plan or bill credits that stop if you change carriers; a bundle can make you pay for accessories you do not need.

Before signing up, check whether a cloud-storage plan, premium app, cellular service or protection plan is required for the features you want. Samsung’s store may offer financing through Affirm subject to eligibility and availability, potentially with a down payment; check the terms presented at checkout rather than treating the monthly figure as the price.

Decide whether an extended warranty adds useful coverage

Compare a service contract with the included manufacturer warranty, the return period, likely repair cost and any relevant credit-card benefits. The FTC explains that a service contract is not the same as a warranty and recommends checking exclusions, repair procedures, labor and shipping costs, and claim requirements. Read its warranty and service-contract guidance before adding coverage.

Protect the purchase with a return and inspection plan

Before paying, confirm the return deadline, restocking fee, return-shipping responsibility, warranty provider, marketplace seller identity and whether all accessories must be returned. Save the receipt, order emails, product description and warranty documents. The FTC recommends keeping purchase records and notes that a credit card can offer stronger protections if a seller fails to deliver or a problem arises; see its online-shopping guidance.

For marketplace purchases, check seller contact information, return rules, shipping charges and buyer protections. Avoid sellers demanding payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency. The FTC’s marketplace shopping advice explains safer practices.

Inspect the device while you can still return it

  1. Photograph the package, device condition and serial number as you open it.
  2. Confirm the exact model, storage and included accessories against the order.
  3. Test the screen, ports, cameras, speakers, buttons and biometric sensors.
  4. Check charging and battery behavior, then test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular service and required accessories.
  5. Look for activation locks or account remnants on a used or refurbished device.
  6. Install available security updates and try the device with your real workload.
  7. Keep packaging and documents until you have decided to keep the device.

Compare the options before checkout

Option Potential advantage Main trade-off Useful when
New Predictable condition, accessories and standard support Often the highest upfront price You value certainty or need a specific configuration
Open-box May be discounted and available for local inspection Condition, included items and terms can vary You can verify the item and have a practical return route
Manufacturer-certified refurbished Defined testing and manufacturer-backed coverage may be available Inventory and model selection can be limited You want a lower price with clearly stated manufacturer terms
Third-party refurbished May cost less than a manufacturer program Parts, battery standards, grading and support depend on seller You can verify the seller’s specific terms
Last-generation new New condition with potential discounts after a successor arrives Less remaining software support may be an issue The older model still meets your requirements
Used marketplace Potential for the lowest asking price Greater risk of damage, locks, counterfeits or misrepresentation You can check the device, seller and protections carefully

Use a simple comparison worksheet

For each candidate, record the same facts. If a seller does not state a term, do not assume it is equivalent to the other options.

What to record Why it matters
Model number and configuration Confirms you are comparing equivalent devices
Condition and included accessories Reveals missing items or wear that may add costs
Device price, tax and shipping Shows the checkout cost rather than the headline price
Warranty provider and duration Clarifies who handles a defect and for how long
Return window, fees and shipping Shows how costly it is to reject a poor fit
Required accessories and subscriptions Captures near-term and recurring costs
Trade-in estimate and conditions Separates likely value from a conditional offer
Estimated all-in cost Makes the final comparison meaningful
