Recommended Free Tools
There is no single best WordPress invoice plugin for every business: the right choice depends on whether you need invoices for WooCommerce orders, invoices and quotes for clients, a payment form, or records for digital-product sales. For service businesses, start with Sliced Invoices; for automatic WooCommerce PDFs, consider WP Overnight’s PDF Invoices & Packing Slips; for recurring client billing, look at Sprout Invoices.
Those tools do different jobs. A PDF generator for an existing order is not a client-billing system, and a payment form that creates a PDF is not automatically an invoice ledger or accounting platform. The comparisons below focus on workflow fit, document and payment capabilities, and important limits.

Quick comparison: which WordPress invoice plugin fits?
| Plugin | Best for | What it does | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sliced Invoices | Freelancers and service businesses | Client invoices, quotes, estimates, payment collection, and client records | Advanced capabilities may require paid extensions; it is not a full accounting platform |
| PDF Invoices & Packing Slips for WooCommerce by WP Overnight | Standard WooCommerce order documents | Generates PDF or XML invoices and packing slips from orders | Primarily automates documents for store orders, not unrelated client projects |
| Sprout Invoices | Client billing, including recurring workflows | Invoices, estimates, client management, payments, and reporting; Pro adds advanced features | Many advanced features require Pro |
| WebToffee PDF Invoices & Packing Slips Suite | WooCommerce stores with fulfillment needs | Invoices plus documents such as packing slips, credit notes, and shipping labels | May be more functionality and cost than a small store needs |
| WPForms | Custom payment forms that produce PDF records | Form submissions, payment collection, and PDF generation on relevant plans | Not a conventional invoice ledger or accounting system |
| WP Simple Pay | Stripe payment requests and recurring payments | Stripe-connected payment forms for one-time or recurring charges | Requires Stripe and is not a full shopping cart or invoice-management system |
| Easy Digital Downloads with an invoice extension | Existing digital-product stores | Connects invoice functionality to digital-product purchases | Invoice features depend on the selected extension and EDD setup |
These are workflow recommendations, not a like-for-like feature score. The WordPress plugin directory includes both general invoice tools and order-document generators, which is one reason the label “invoice plugin” can be confusing: WordPress invoice plugins and PDF invoice plugins.
First, identify what you mean by “invoice”
WooCommerce order invoice
A WooCommerce invoice is generally generated from an existing order. It can reflect the customer and order details, products, quantities, taxes, discounts, shipping, payment method, and order number. WP Overnight and WebToffee are designed for this kind of document automation.
#1 Best Overall
Standalone client invoice
A consultant or agency may need to create an invoice for a project, retainer, deposit, or milestone that never passed through an online store. That is a closer fit for Sliced Invoices or Sprout Invoices, which are organized around clients, invoices, and estimates.
Payment request
If you only need a form to collect a fixed or customer-entered amount and send a confirmation, WPForms or WP Simple Pay may be enough. A payment form is a checkout interface; it does not by itself provide a complete accounts-receivable workflow.
Digital-product purchase record
Digital sellers already using Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) may prefer an invoice extension that attaches documents to EDD purchases. The exact experience depends on the chosen extension, EDD version, payment setup, and tax configuration; EDD should not be treated as a generic client-invoicing tool.
Invoice, receipt, packing slip, and credit note are not interchangeable
- Invoice: a request for payment or formal record of a sale.
- Receipt: evidence that payment was received.
- Packing slip: a fulfillment document listing shipped items, generally without payment details.
- Credit note: a record of a refund, credit, or reduction in the amount owed.
- Payment form: a way to collect payment; it is not automatically a complete invoice system.
1. Sliced Invoices: best starting point for service businesses
What it does
Sliced Invoices is built for creating invoices and quotes in WordPress. Its listed capabilities include client management, online payments, reports, exports, taxes, and PDF documents. Its modular extensions can add capabilities such as PDF invoices, translations, form integrations, and WooCommerce-related functionality. See the Sliced Invoices WordPress.org listing and official bundles.
Who should choose it
It is a strong fit for freelancers, consultants, agencies, and small service companies that need both quotes and invoices. A secondary comparison listed a starting signal of approximately $79 per year; that is not a permanent price, so check the current bundle and renewal terms before buying: WPBeginner’s comparison.
Trade-offs
Some advanced functions require paid extensions or bundles. Sliced Invoices is a focused client-billing tool, not a substitute for full bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, payroll, or tax filing. WooCommerce merchants who only need PDFs attached to orders may be better served by an order-document plugin.
2. WP Overnight PDF Invoices & Packing Slips: best for ordinary WooCommerce PDFs
What it does
This plugin generates PDF or XML invoices from WooCommerce orders, can attach documents to selected order emails, and allows administrator and customer downloads. Its listing includes sequential numbering, bulk generation, customizable HTML/CSS templates, multilingual support, and extensions for additional documents and tax-related needs. See the WP Overnight plugin listing.
Who should choose it
Choose it when checkout already creates the order and your main need is an invoice or packing slip attached to order emails or available in the customer’s account. It is not designed as a manual invoice manager for consulting work outside WooCommerce.
Trade-offs and checks
Invoice delivery depends on the configured order-status and email triggers, as well as working email delivery. PDF rendering may need extra attention for custom fonts, special characters, CJK scripts, or right-to-left languages; the listing identifies language and RTL/CJK extensions. XML output alone does not prove that a document meets an e-invoicing mandate in a particular country.
3. Sprout Invoices: best for recurring client billing
What it does
Sprout Invoices targets client invoices and estimates rather than only store-order paperwork. Its free-plugin listing describes client management, customizable invoice and estimate templates, payment management, reports, multiple currencies, localization, tax features, and integrations. Pro adds features such as recurring invoices and subscription payments, client dashboards, payment terms, deposits, time tracking, projects, advanced reporting, and additional payment integrations. Check the Sprout Invoices listing for the current feature breakdown.
Who should choose it
It is worth considering for freelancers, agencies, and service providers that bill clients repeatedly or need estimates before issuing invoices. A comparison has listed packages in an approximate $39–$299 range; treat that as a secondary price signal, not a current quote, and confirm licensing with the vendor: Easy Digital Downloads’ comparison.

Trade-offs
The free version is materially less capable than Pro, so verify that the particular gateway, recurring-payment feature, and client workflow you need are included in the license you select. It can be more system than a shop needs just to attach an invoice PDF to WooCommerce orders.
4. WebToffee PDF Invoices & Packing Slips Suite: best for broader WooCommerce fulfillment documents
What it does
The suite covers more than invoices and packing slips. The WooCommerce Marketplace listing describes credit notes, delivery notes, picklists, shipping and dispatch labels, address labels, proforma invoices, automated email attachments, customizable templates, multilingual support, RTL support, and tax-information fields such as VAT, GST, and ABN. See the WebToffee suite listing.
Who should choose it
It is suited to a growing WooCommerce store that genuinely needs several order, shipping, or warehouse documents in one extension. On August 16, 2026, the marketplace displayed $149 for one year and $238.40 for two years, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and version 5.0.3. Those are time-sensitive listing details, not guaranteed current prices or versions.
Trade-offs
For a small store that only needs a basic invoice PDF, the broader suite may be unnecessary. Tax fields and document customization help present order information, but they do not establish universal tax or legal compliance.
5. WPForms: best for custom payment forms with PDF records
What it does
WPForms is a form builder, not a traditional invoicing system. Relevant paid plans include payment integrations and PDF generation from form entries; the pricing page also lists recurring payments and entry exports on applicable plans. The official page showed introductory annual prices of $49.50 for Basic, $99.50 for Plus, $199.50 for Pro, and $299.50 for Elite. It states that renewals are charged at full price and taxes may apply: WPForms pricing and plan details.

Consider it if you need a custom form for a service, deposit, or payment request, with fields that collect details before payment and a PDF record afterward—especially if the site already uses WPForms.
Trade-offs and fees
A PDF generated from a form entry does not create a conventional invoice ledger with accounts-receivable aging, sequential invoice administration, or formal client portals. The pricing page states that active Pro licenses avoid WPForms platform transaction fees, while free or inactive-license use may incur a 3% platform fee; processor charges remain separate.
6. WP Simple Pay: best for Stripe payment requests
What it does
WP Simple Pay focuses on Stripe-connected payment forms. Its listed features include customer-entered amounts, one-time and recurring payments, automatic billing, subscription management, renewal reminders, upcoming invoice functionality, and payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. The vendor says an active Stripe account is required and that the plugin is not intended as a full shopping-cart solution or as a cart integration with WooCommerce or EDD: WP Simple Pay pricing and product details.
Who should choose it
It can suit a freelancer collecting deposits, a membership or subscription-style business, a nonprofit, or another business that wants a relatively direct Stripe payment workflow without a WooCommerce store.

The pricing page displayed promotional annual prices of $49.50 for Personal and $99.50 for Plus; the offer may change. Plugin pricing is separate from Stripe processing fees. WP Simple Pay is not a substitute for a client-invoice ledger or a complete shopping cart.
7. Easy Digital Downloads with an invoice extension: best for existing digital-product stores
What it does
EDD is designed for selling digital products such as software, ebooks, templates, courses, and downloads. Invoice documents can be added through its extension ecosystem and tied to digital purchases. A comparison of WordPress invoice solutions discusses EDD-related invoicing alongside WooCommerce tools and standalone invoice plugins: Easy Digital Downloads’ comparison.
Who should choose it
Choose this route if you already run an EDD store and want invoice records attached to those purchases, without physical-shipping documents.
Trade-offs
Invoice functionality depends on the specific extension, license, EDD version, and tax and payment configuration. It is unnecessary overhead for a generic payment request and a poor fit for manually billing service clients. Confirm the exact extension and its current capabilities rather than assuming EDD core alone provides every invoice feature.
How to choose by workflow
| If you need… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Invoices and quotes for consulting or project work | Sliced Invoices | Built around client invoices and estimates |
| Recurring client invoices and client-facing billing workflows | Sprout Invoices | Its Pro feature set includes recurring billing and client dashboards |
| Automatic PDFs on WooCommerce order emails | WP Overnight | Focused on generating documents from orders |
| Invoices plus packing, delivery, or shipping documents | WebToffee | Offers a broader fulfillment-document suite |
| A custom form that collects payment and creates a PDF record | WPForms | Combines flexible forms with payment and PDF features on applicable plans |
| Stripe payment links or recurring payments | WP Simple Pay | Concentrates on Stripe payment collection |
| Invoices linked to digital downloads | EDD plus a suitable invoice extension | Fits an existing EDD purchase workflow |
| Broader invoicing and accounting outside WordPress | FreshBooks or another accounting service | May suit businesses that need a larger financial workflow than a site plugin provides |
What to check before choosing
Invoice creation and numbering
Confirm whether invoices are created manually, generated from orders, or both. Check sequential numbering, prefixes and suffixes, year-based sequences, credit-note numbering, duplicate prevention, and what happens when an invoice is edited, voided, or canceled. WP Overnight advertises sequential numbering. WooCommerce also lists invoice products with numbering capabilities, including PDF Invoices by Andrew Benbow, a separate product that should not be confused with WP Overnight’s similarly named plugin.
Tax fields and legal requirements
Check whether the document can show the business name and address, tax ID, customer details, tax rates and totals, exemptions, currency, payment terms, due dates, and credit notes. Having a field for VAT, GST, or another tax identifier is not a guarantee that an invoice meets every jurisdiction’s rules. WooCommerce says invoice layouts should be configured according to local tax-office requirements: WooCommerce PDF invoice setup and customization.
Payment collection and total cost
Check supported processors, manual payment methods, deposits, payment links, recurring charges, and whether customers can manage subscriptions or pay through a portal. The plugin license is only one cost: payment processors may charge transaction and currency-conversion fees, and some workflows need paid extensions, an accounting subscription, or reliable email delivery. Distinguish plugin transaction fees from processor fees, and promotional license prices from renewals.
Document output and store compatibility
For WooCommerce, confirm which order statuses trigger documents, which emails receive attachments, whether customers can download invoices from My Account, and how refunds and credit notes work. Test compatibility with your actual extensions, including subscriptions, deposits, memberships, tax tools, and multilingual plugins. For international or regulated e-invoicing, verify the exact file format and jurisdiction required; an XML option alone is not enough.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsData portability and maintenance
Ask whether records remain in WordPress, what can be exported, and what happens to existing invoices if a license expires. A plugin continuing to generate documents is different from receiving updates and support. Since invoice records matter, back up the site and document the numbering sequence before migrations, restores, or plugin changes. WordPress.org listing data such as active installations and tested versions changes over time and should be treated as a dated signal, not a permanent quality score.
Setup and testing: catch errors before sending real invoices
For a WooCommerce invoice plugin
- Install and activate the extension, then open its WooCommerce or plugin settings.
- Enter the business identity, address, tax information, logo, currency, and numbering format.
- Choose the order emails that receive invoices and configure the order status that triggers generation.
- Enable customer downloads in the account area if that option is available.
- Create a test order and verify the invoice number, tax, discounts, shipping, payment details, and customer information.
- Test full and partial refunds, resends, and order-status changes. Confirm that documents are not duplicated and that the correct credit note is produced if needed.
- Test actual email delivery through the site’s configured mail service; an invoice can generate correctly while the email attachment fails.
- Back up the site before changing templates or numbering settings.
WooCommerce’s documentation describes invoice attachments for paid or completed orders and customer access through order-related pages; exact behavior depends on the extension and configuration: WooCommerce PDF invoice setup and customization.
For standalone invoices or payment forms
- Set the business details, tax settings, currency, invoice numbering, and payment terms.
- Create a test client, quote, invoice, or payment form with representative line items and customer fields.
- Connect and verify the payment processor account, then configure one-time or recurring behavior as needed.
- Send a test invoice or submit a test payment. Check that the processor record, WordPress entry, customer email, PDF, and payment status agree.
- Test failed payments, refunds, and recurring-payment behavior before relying on automated reminders or billing.
- Set up backups and limit access to financial records to the people who need it.
When a WordPress plugin is not enough
A WordPress plugin may create PDFs, track invoice numbers, collect payments, and provide basic reports. That does not usually make it a replacement for double-entry bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, payroll, comprehensive expense tracking, accountant collaboration, jurisdiction-specific tax filing, or audit-grade financial controls.
If you need a broader cloud invoicing and accounting service, FreshBooks lists recurring invoices, deposits, late fees, card and ACH payments, estimates, time tracking, and tax-time reports, with client limits varying by plan. Its pricing page has displayed temporary promotional offers, so do not treat a sale price as a standard ongoing cost: FreshBooks pricing. Choose an external service if features such as bank synchronization, accountant access, tax reporting, or access independent of your WordPress site matter more than keeping the invoicing workflow entirely on the site.

Invoice document checklist
Before sending a real invoice, check whether it includes the details your business and jurisdiction require:
- Legal business name and address.
- Customer name and billing details.
- Unique invoice number and issue date.
- Due date and payment terms.
- Itemized descriptions, quantities, and prices.
- Currency, discounts, tax rate, and tax amount where applicable.
- Tax ID or exemption details where required.
- Payment instructions and a clear record of payment status.
- A process for correcting invoices and documenting refunds or credits.
Local rules vary by jurisdiction, business type, and transaction. Confirm the requirements that apply to your business rather than treating a plugin’s template as legal advice or a compliance guarantee.
