Gautam Dev, a 61-year-old IIT Kanpur alumnus, says he left a Dallas software-engineering job in September 2024 rather than relocate to another state. Since then, he has reportedly searched for full-time work without receiving an offer, turned to gig work, and used donations to help pay bills. His account is a personal story—not evidence by itself of why employers make hiring decisions or of broader job-market trends.
Why Gautam Dev left his job in Dallas
Dev says that in September 2024 he was told he would have to move to another state to keep his software-engineering job. He chose to stay in Dallas and look for another role. Moneycontrol reported his account, quoting him as saying, “That decision became a disaster.” The quotation is reproduced through Moneycontrol’s report of an interview with Business Insider, rather than independently verified against the underlying interview. His search has brought interviews, but no reported offer
According to the account, Dev has mainly applied through LinkedIn and contacted professional acquaintances. He has had interviews, including several rounds with one employer, but the reporting says no full-time offer followed. The account describes a search lasting nearly two years; it does not provide a complete application history or independently establish why employers did not hire him.
Age, an employment gap, and AI are his explanations—not established causes
Dev has speculated that his age and the time away from full-time employment may count against him. He has also said that he sees AI-engineering vacancies but is unsure whether he is qualified because he lacks much AI experience. These are his perceptions; the reporting does not show that any employer cited age, the employment gap, or AI skills as a reason for rejecting him. It also does not establish that AI hiring trends caused his difficulty.

Gig work and donations have helped with bills
Dev says he started gig work through Uber, DoorDash, and Walmart Spark. He reportedly found the earnings lower than he had hoped and said he could not carry heavy items, which limited some work. Moneycontrol reported that a fundraiser started in January 2026 had raised more than $9,000 and that Dev used the money for bills. That figure is the amount reported by the outlet, not an independently verified accounting of his finances. Moneycontrol’s report
Returning to India is a possibility, not an announced move
Dev has considered returning to India, where he lived before moving to the United States more than two decades ago. The reporting says he has not set a departure date and would need time to arrange a move. Hindustan Times reported that Dev expected to become eligible for Social Security at 62 in January 2027; that is his stated expectation, not confirmation of his individual eligibility by the Social Security Administration. What the account does—and does not—show
Dev’s reported experience traces a difficult sequence: he declined a job-preserving relocation, spent an extended period looking for another full-time role, and relied on gig work and donations as he considered what to do next. The available reporting does not provide a full picture of his finances, benefits, or the circumstances of individual hiring decisions. It therefore cannot establish a general pattern about older workers, software hiring, or gig-work income.
