6 Ways to Write a Brief Description of Yourself

A useful brief description starts with its audience. Learn six ways to introduce your role, choose relevant strengths, show proof, and tailor the wording to a resume, application, or bio.

To write a brief description of yourself, decide who will read it and what they need to know. Introduce your role or field, choose a few relevant strengths, support them with a concrete example, and edit the result to fit the format. A resume profile, application response, and personal bio should not all say the same thing.

1. Start with the audience and purpose

Before drafting, identify where the description will appear and what it should help the reader understand or decide. An employer scanning a resume needs evidence related to a role; a website visitor may want a quick sense of your work and perspective. Select details for that reader rather than trying to summarize your entire life.

  • Resume: foreground qualifications and experience relevant to the target position.
  • Application: answer the prompt directly and include a relevant goal or motivation when it helps.
  • Professional website or profile: explain what you do and the value you offer; a personal interest can add warmth if it suits the audience.

For resume material, compare your wording with the job description and emphasize accurate skills or experience that match its needs. UC Davis Career Center guidance also recommends tailoring resume content to the position: resume guidance.

2. Open with a clear professional identity

Give the reader a quick, plain-language answer to “Who are you?” State your current role, field, or relevant status. Avoid a vague opening such as “I am a hardworking professional”; it describes an attitude but does not identify your work.

#1 Best Overall
Five Star Spiral Notebook, 1 Subject, College Ruled Paper, 4-3/8" x 7", Small Size, 80 Sheets, Fights Ink Bleed, Water Resistant Cover, Seaglass Green (450048CH1-ECM)
  • This 4-3/8" x 7" small size, 1 subject notebook has 80 double-sided college ruled sheets that fight ink bleed and are perforated for easy tear out. Perfectly sized for when you're on the go.
  • Tough pockets resist tears and hold loose sheets and notes. Durable plastic water-resistant front cover helps protect your notes and our Spiral Lock wire helps prevent snags on clothes and backpacks.
  • All the benefits of our larger notebooks in a smaller, easy to carry size. Sheets measure 4-3/8" x 7 when torn out.
  • Available in Seaglass Green
  • LASTS ALL YEAR. GUARANTEED!*

For example, “I’m a bookkeeper who supports small businesses” tells the reader more than “I’m a dedicated and motivated person.” If you are changing fields or early in your career, name the relevant direction or status without implying experience you do not have.

3. Pick only strengths that fit

Choose a small number of skills, qualifications, or areas of experience that support the purpose of the description. A list of unrelated strengths makes it harder to see why they matter. For a job-focused version, use the role’s requirements as a filter, while keeping your language truthful and natural rather than copying keywords without context.

  • Glide from page to page: Your favorite gel or ballpoint pens will move effortlessly across these smooth pages for A+ notes with minimal ink bleeding or show-through
  • 3-Hold punched: Every notebook comes 3-hole punched to fit a standard binder; take along one notebook or several to save extra trips to the locker

Indeed’s guidance on resume summaries likewise focuses on relevant qualifications and matching a profile to the job: resume summary examples.

4. Prove your value with a specific detail

Whenever possible, include one concrete achievement, project, responsibility, or credential. A specific example gives the reader something to assess; a string of adjectives such as “innovative, passionate, and results-driven” does not.

For instance, a project you completed or a responsibility you handled can show how you applied a skill. Use numbers only when you can verify them and they add meaningful context. Do not invent a result to make a description sound more impressive.

5. Add direction or a human detail when it helps

A short description can say what you are looking to do next, particularly in an application or career-transition context. A public-facing bio may include a personal interest if it is relevant or helps make the introduction memorable. Neither element is obligatory: leave it out when it distracts from the reader’s main question.

6. Edit for length, voice, and clarity

Follow any word or character limit set by the platform, employer, or application prompt. If no limit is provided, use context-specific recommendations as a starting point, not a rule. Indeed says a short bio is usually 100–150 words or three to five sentences; UC Davis describes a resume professional profile as three to five sentences. These are different guidance points for different formats, not universal standards.

Choose first person (“I manage…”) or third person (“Jordan manages…”) to suit the destination, then keep the point of view consistent. Read the draft aloud and remove repeated ideas, generic claims, and details that do not serve the audience. Indeed offers additional guidance on short bios and examples at how to write a short bio. For resume profiles, see UC Davis Career Center guidance.

A simple drafting template

Use this as a scaffold, not a script. Replace every bracket with accurate information and delete any sentence that does not help the reader:

I’m a [role or field] with experience in [relevant area]. I [specific strength or accomplishment, preferably with evidence]. I bring [relevant skill or approach] to [audience, team, or problem]. I’m currently [relevant goal or direction].

For example, someone might adapt it to say: “I’m a bookkeeper with experience supporting small businesses. I organize monthly records and help owners keep routine reporting on schedule. I’m interested in bringing that practical, detail-focused approach to a growing finance team.” Use an example like this only if it accurately describes your own experience and goals.

Adapt the description for each destination

If you need more than one version, revise the content rather than merely changing the opening pronoun. Use these choices to guide each draft:

Destination Audience and purpose Details to emphasize Voice and length
Resume profile Employer assessing fit for a particular role Relevant qualifications, experience, and evidence tied to the position Concise; follow the resume format and any stated limits
Application response Reviewer evaluating the prompt or your direction A direct answer, relevant strengths, and a goal when appropriate Use the prompt’s required length and voice
Website or professional profile Visitors, clients, or professional contacts learning what you do Professional identity, value, and a human detail if useful First or third person; fit the platform’s limits and tone

Final checks before you use it

  • Can the reader identify your role or relevant direction quickly?
  • Does each strength connect to the audience or purpose?
  • Is at least one claim supported by a real example where appropriate?
  • Have you removed unsupported claims, invented metrics, and empty self-praise?
  • Does the wording fit the required length and maintain one point of view?
