Use testimonials where they help visitors assess a specific offer: a concise quote on your homepage, relevant customer evidence on a product or service page, or a deeper story in a case study or video. Whichever format you choose, publish only authentic statements, get permission to reuse them, and make relevant relationships or incentives clear. A testimonial on your own site is promotional content, not merely a review you happen to host.
1. Add a short customer quote to your homepage
A homepage quote can introduce the kind of experience a customer had with your business. Keep it brief enough to scan, but preserve the customer’s meaning and wording. Include enough identifying context—such as a name, role, or business, where appropriate and permitted—to help readers understand who is speaking.
- Get permission to publish the quote and any identifying details.
- Do not edit wording in a way that changes the customer’s meaning.
- If the customer received compensation, a free product, or has another material connection to your business, make the relationship clear where readers will notice it.
2. Put relevant evidence on the product or service page
Place a testimonial near the offer it relates to, so visitors can evaluate the customer’s experience in context. A statement about one service should not appear to endorse a different service, and an individual result should not imply that other customers should expect the same outcome.
Be especially careful with claims about savings, earnings, performance, or other measurable results. A customer’s account does not by itself substantiate a factual performance claim. Keep records supporting material claims and qualify results when needed to avoid suggesting they are typical without evidence.

3. Create a dedicated testimonials page
A testimonials page gives visitors room to browse a collection of customer statements. Organize them by product, service, or customer need so readers can find evidence relevant to their question. Explain how statements were collected or selected when leaving out that context could create a misleading impression.
Do not present a hand-picked set of positive reviews as representative of all customer feedback if it is not. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends transparency about review practices and warns against displays that mislead consumers, including giving positive reviews undue prominence or excluding negative feedback.

4. Turn a detailed customer account into a case study
A case study can give readers more useful context than a short endorsement. With permission, describe the customer’s starting situation, the work your business performed, and the outcome. Separate the customer’s account from facts you can independently support; do not treat a testimonial alone as proof of a measurable claim.
- Agree with the customer on what information, name, image, and business details may be published.
- Describe the initial problem and the work undertaken without overstating your role.
- Verify factual results and include the conditions or context needed to interpret them.
- Let the customer review attributed statements for accuracy before publication.
5. Publish an authentic video testimonial
Video can convey a customer’s account in their own voice. Identify the speaker and their relevant relationship to your business, get permission to use their image and recording, and ensure any required disclosure is noticeable in the video itself. The FTC cautions that a disclosure in video may be too easy to miss if it does not stand out.

Make the video usable beyond sound: add accurate captions and provide a text version or summary for visitors who cannot or do not want to watch. Keep edits faithful to the speaker’s meaning.
6. Feature genuine third-party reviews with clear context
If you display reviews from another platform, name the source and present them in a way that does not imply independence where your business controls the selection or display. Do not filter a review feed to show only favorable feedback or arrange reviews in a way that creates a misleading impression.

Be transparent about how reviews are collected, processed, and displayed when that information matters to how readers interpret them. The FTC also recommends reasonable procedures for identifying fake or suspicious reviews. Incentives should never be conditioned on a positive review; an incentive can affect how readers judge credibility and may need to be disclosed.
What to check before publishing
- Authenticity: The statement reflects a real customer’s experience and has not been altered to change its meaning.
- Permission: You have permission to reuse the customer’s words, image, or video and identifying details.
- Disclosure: Compensation, free products, insider relationships, or other material connections are disclosed clearly when relevant.
- Claim support: Material factual or performance claims have evidence beyond the testimonial itself.
- Fair presentation: The collection and display do not mislead readers about what customers think.
- Accessibility: Text is readable, videos have captions, and key information is not available only through an image or audio.
- Maintenance: Recheck links, permissions, disclosures, and the continued accuracy of claims as your offers change.
Do testimonials help Google show review stars?
Adding testimonials or review structured data does not guarantee a review snippet in Google Search. Google’s Review Snippet documentation sets out requirements for Review and AggregateRating markup, and excludes self-serving review snippets for LocalBusiness and Organization. Do not promise stars in search results just because your site includes testimonials or schema.

Which format should you choose?
There is no universally superior testimonial format established by the available guidance. Choose based on the visitor’s question, the relevance and verifiability of the claim, disclosure needs, accessibility, and the effort required to collect and maintain the material. A short quote may suit a homepage; a detailed case study may better explain a complex service; third-party reviews can provide useful context when their source and presentation are transparent.
Why these safeguards matter
The FTC says testimonials are “by definition, advertising or promotional messages.” Its Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect October 21, 2024. A business that publishes customer testimonials on its own site is disseminating promotional messages; it is not simply a neutral host of reviews. The FTC’s separate platform guidance explains that genuine reviews should not be filtered to show only favorable feedback and that material connections may require clear disclosure.
