To avoid holiday credit card debt, set a spending limit you can repay, check each purchase against it, and read the full terms before accepting a store-card offer or installment plan. Discounts, rewards, and “no interest” promotions can make borrowing look cheaper than it is. The six traps below are a practical guide based on Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance—not an official regulator ranking. Your card’s terms and current statement control.
1. Spending beyond a payoff-ready holiday budget
Decide what you can spend before shopping, based on money available after essential bills and other obligations—not on the credit limit or the discount offered. If you expect to carry a balance, interest can make a purchase cost more than its price tag. A rewards bonus is not a saving if the interest you pay to earn it exceeds its value.
The CFPB’s advice is direct: “Before you buy something, check to make sure you’re still within your budget.”
- Set one total holiday spending cap and, if useful, smaller limits for gifts, travel, food, and other categories.
- Track each purchase against the cap as you make it, including purchases on different cards and installment plans.
- Before adding a purchase, decide how and when you will repay it. If the plan depends on carrying a balance you cannot afford, scale back.
See the CFPB’s holiday spending guidance for help planning and tracking holiday purchases.

2. Accepting a store-card offer at checkout without checking the terms
A checkout discount can be paired with an account that is usable only at one retailer or its partners, a high APR, fees, or promotional financing. A store card may be worth considering if its terms fit your needs, but the immediate discount alone does not tell you whether it is a good deal. Ask whether you are applying for credit, rather than simply joining a loyalty program, and whether the application includes an optional add-on.
Before you apply, pause to check the account’s APR, fees, where it can be used, and any promotional payoff deadline. Consider whether another account is manageable and whether you would still want it without the checkout discount.
Retail cards are common, and many applications happen in the checkout moment. In its 2024 issue spotlight, the CFPB reported more than 160 million open retail-card accounts in 2024 and said half of retail-card applications are submitted at the point of sale. Those market figures are context, not a measure of the risks or value of any individual offer. Read the CFPB’s retail-card issue spotlight and the bureau’s six tips for evaluating a retail store card.
3. Mistaking deferred interest for true 0% interest
“No interest if paid in full in 12 months” usually signals a deferred-interest offer, not a true 0% APR promotion. With a true zero-interest promotion, interest is not added during the promotional period; after it ends, the stated rate applies to the remaining balance. With deferred interest, if you fail to pay the entire promotional balance by the deadline, the issuer may add interest retroactively from the purchase date, as described in the offer’s terms.

Minimum payments may not be enough to clear a deferred-interest balance by the deadline. Before accepting one, find the exact payoff date, calculate the monthly amount needed to pay in full, and check how payments are allocated if you have other balances. Make every payment on time and aim to finish early so a delay or miscalculation does not leave a balance when the promotion ends.
The CFPB’s retail-card issue spotlight cites an earlier bureau report finding that about one fifth of deferred-interest promotional balances had retroactively imposed interest charges; the spotlight does not establish the originating report’s year for this figure. That is a reported market finding, not a prediction about an individual offer.
For the distinction and payment mechanics, see the CFPB’s explanation of “no interest if paid in full” offers.
4. Carrying a balance or paying only the minimum
The minimum payment can keep an account from becoming immediately delinquent, but it generally does not pay down the balance quickly. The unpaid amount can accrue interest, increasing the total cost of holiday purchases. Paying more than the minimum—and ideally the full statement balance when you can—reduces the amount left to accrue interest.

Card terms differ. If your account has a grace period and you are not carrying a balance, paying the full balance by the due date can avoid interest on purchases. Cash advances generally begin accruing interest on the transaction date. Check your agreement and statement for your grace-period terms, rates, and payment due date.
Retail-card rates can be high, but reported market averages are not your personal rate. In its issue spotlight, the CFPB reported that 90 percent of retail cards had a maximum APR above 30 percent, compared with 38 percent of non-retail general-purpose cards. The spotlight also reported a 32.66 percent average APR for private-label cards at top retailers in December 2024. These figures describe the reported market data, not every card or a current rate for your account.
A missed minimum can lead to fees and possibly a higher rate, and may harm your credit history. For payment and grace-period basics, consult the FTC’s guide to using credit cards and disputing charges and the CFPB’s explanation of credit card grace periods.
5. Missing due dates, opening several cards, or nearing a limit
Holiday spending can create several avoidable problems at once: late payments, a rapid string of new credit applications, or a high balance relative to a card’s limit. Store cards may have relatively low limits, so a single large purchase can use a substantial share of available credit.

Rewards are only useful if you can actually use them
Promotional language may emphasize a reward’s advertised value while leaving limits, redemption rules, or conditions less prominent. The CFPB has identified practices that may be unfair or deceptive, including devaluing earned rewards, using vague or buried conditions to revoke them, or deducting rewards without delivering the expected benefit. Its 2024 circular is enforcement guidance; it does not mean every change to a rewards program is automatically unlawful.
The CFPB says covered persons that offer, provide, or operate credit card rewards programs and their service providers “may violate the prohibition against unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices in a variety of circumstances,” including when conduct involves a merchant partner and even if actions are consistent with program terms. The circular’s use of “may” matters: whether conduct violates the law depends on the circumstances. Read the CFPB’s rewards-program circular and check the program’s current terms before counting rewards as part of your budget.
Installments still need to fit your cash flow
Buy now, pay later (BNPL) plans split a purchase into scheduled installments, but the schedule does not make the purchase free of consequences. The FTC advises shoppers to check for late, per-transaction, or change fees. Some providers report payment history to credit bureaus, and some perform credit checks. Policies vary by provider.

Before using a plan, check its payment dates, fees, credit-check and reporting practices, what happens after a missed payment, and how returns or disputes work. Add the installments to your holiday budget alongside card payments and bills; do not commit money that is already needed elsewhere. The FTC’s BNPL guide explains questions to ask before buying.
What to do if a charge looks wrong
Review card statements promptly and keep receipts, order confirmations, and other transaction details. The FTC explains that the Fair Credit Billing Act provides a process for disputing qualifying credit-card billing errors, including duplicate charges and charges for items returned or never received. Not every disagreement about merchandise qualifies as a billing error, and a BNPL provider may not offer the same dispute route as a credit-card issuer.
If a charge appears incorrect, follow the instructions and deadlines in your card agreement or statement, and contact the issuer through its stated billing-error process. For details, see the FTC’s credit-card dispute guidance.
