The right choice depends on whether you need a general ledger, tax categorization, per-acre budgets, field-level profitability, production records, or grain marketing tools. This comparison matches six options to those jobs and flags where published prices are dated or feature details need confirmation.
How to choose farm accounting software
Start by separating financial bookkeeping from farm-management records. Accounting software tracks income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and financial reports; farm-management software may also track fields, crops, livestock, inventory, work orders, or production. Some products combine these functions, while others handle one layer and rely on another system for the rest. Alabama Cooperative Extension’s guide distinguishes these capabilities and notes that features can depend on the package: Farm Recordkeeping Software.
- For financial statements and transaction workflows: check for a true bookkeeping system or general ledger, not just a budgeting or cashflow tool.
- For taxes: confirm whether the product produces a Schedule F report, categorizes transactions for later tax preparation, or simply exports records. Have a qualified tax professional review tax reporting.
- For farm profitability: look for per-acre budgets, breakeven analysis, crop-year accounting, or field-level reports if those are central to your decisions.
- For operations: verify specific needs such as production, livestock, inventory, work orders, or grain contracts; do not assume they are included because a product is farm-focused.
- For day-to-day fit: check mobile access, receipt capture, invoicing, payables, payroll, integrations, accountant access, number of entities, and the plan limits that apply to your operation.

Six farm accounting software options
1. Finance Farmhand: budgeting and breakevens
Finance Farmhand is the comparison’s pick for budgeting and breakeven planning. It describes the product as offering Schedule F books alongside per-acre planning, making it a candidate for operators who want to model costs and returns by acre rather than rely only on a general ledger.

#1 Best Overall
The comparison listed a free option and a $10-per-month starting price in July 2026. Those are dated secondary-source figures, not a current vendor quote. Confirm what each plan includes, whether it covers your accounting workflow, and how its Schedule F support works before relying on it for tax preparation.
2. Ambrook: a cloud accounting replacement
Ambrook is positioned as an option for farms looking to replace their existing bookkeeping system. Its product page lists mobile receipt, check, and bill scanning; analytics; invoicing; Schedule F and Schedule C classifications; team collaboration; U.S.-based support; and live onboarding: Ambrook accounting. Those listed classifications should not be mistaken for a guarantee that the software prepares a complete or correct tax return.
Rank #2
Finance Farmhand reported Ambrook starting at $59–$99 per month per entity in July 2026. Because the figure is dated and tied to entities, verify current pricing, plan limits, and the number of entities covered directly with Ambrook.
3. Traction Ag: accounting connected to field operations
Traction Ag is aimed at larger or multi-entity farms that want accounting linked with operational records. Finance Farmhand highlights crop-year accounting, work orders, grain contracts, and integrations. Alabama Cooperative Extension describes Traction Ag as combining bookkeeping, financial management, and recordkeeping, while cautioning that available capabilities vary by package.

Rank #3
Finance Farmhand reported annual pricing of $950–$3,950 in July 2026. This is a dated secondary-source range, not a current quote. Ask Traction Ag which package supports your entities, records, integrations, and accounting needs, and whether implementation or other charges apply.
4. FarmRaise Tracks: mobile cashflow and farm-focused records
FarmRaise Tracks is presented as a fit for smaller farms looking for farm-oriented cashflow, mobile bookkeeping, and grant support. A FarmRaise help-center comparison dated September 2024 describes farm categories, Schedule F reporting, invoicing, transaction imports, offline access, and inventory: Tracks Premium vs. Free. Because that feature description is dated, confirm that each capability remains available and determine whether its reporting meets your needs.
Rank #4
Toolradar reported FarmRaise Premium at $36 per month billed annually or $40 month-to-month in September 2026. These are secondary-source figures, not verified current quotations. Check FarmRaise’s current plans, billing terms, and limits before subscribing.
5. Harvest Profit: grain marketing and field-level profitability
Finance Farmhand identifies Harvest Profit as an option for grain marketing and field-level profitability. That makes it worth investigating if your main need is to understand crop economics or support grain-selling decisions. The comparison does not establish that Harvest Profit replaces a full general ledger, so confirm whether you need separate bookkeeping software for financial statements, tax categories, invoicing, or other accounting tasks.

6. QuickBooks: general accounting when your accountant requires it
QuickBooks may suit a farm whose accountant already uses it or requires it for shared bookkeeping. Finance Farmhand says it does not include farm-specific Schedule F categories, per-acre budgets, or breakeven analysis out of the box. Toolradar’s September 2026 comparison says QuickBooks can separate results using classes and locations but does not generate Schedule F directly: Toolradar’s farm accounting software comparison.
Toolradar reported QuickBooks Plus at $140 per month in September 2026. This is a dated secondary-source price, not a current quote. Ask your accountant which QuickBooks edition and setup they support, and whether you will need farm-specific categories or a separate planning tool.

Alabama Cooperative Extension also discusses PcMars and FarmBooks as examples of farm-oriented recordkeeping software. PcMars is described as farm-built, with bookkeeping and optional field and production tracking. FarmBooks is bookkeeping-focused and supports financial reports and some livestock records. These may be relevant if you want a farm-specific alternative outside the six options above, but confirm current products, packages, and capabilities with their providers. Extension’s historical prices are not current quotes.

Quick Recap
Match the tool to the job
- Choose a budgeting-first tool if your priority is per-acre planning and breakevens, and verify that its bookkeeping and tax workflows are sufficient.
- Consider a full accounting replacement if you want transaction capture, invoicing, reports, and collaboration in one place; confirm tax-report scope and accountant access.
- Prioritize connected operations if multiple entities, crop-year records, work orders, or grain contracts need to relate to the books.
- Look at mobile cashflow tools if your farm needs simple, farm-specific transaction tracking, while checking present-day feature availability and tax-report details.
- Keep general accounting if your accountant’s workflow depends on it, then identify which farm-specific analyses or categories must be handled separately.
