The best bill-splitting app depends on whether you need a permanent expense ledger, a quick way to collect money, or a temporary trip calculator. Splitwise is the strongest general-purpose option, while Tricount is better suited to holidays and short-lived groups. Settle Up handles complicated splits, Venmo Groups works well for U.S. Venmo users, and Spliit is the simplest no-account choice.
PayPal can also split a bill, but it is primarily a payment-request tool rather than a complete expense-sharing ledger. Availability, pricing, and payment features can vary by country, platform, and account.
Best bill-splitting apps at a glance
| App | Best for | Biggest strength | Important drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Splitwise | Roommates, couples, and ongoing expenses | Flexible ledger with debt simplification | Free accounts are limited to four expenses per day |
| Tricount | Trips and temporary groups | Simple collaboration for groups of up to 50 | Older pricing and Premium information is outdated |
| Settle Up | Complex, offline, or multi-currency expenses | Weighted shares, multiple payers, and offline use | Premium features and prices vary by platform |
| Venmo Groups | Groups already using Venmo | Expense tracking and repayment in one app | Primarily useful for U.S. Venmo users |
| Spliit | Free, no-account expense sharing | No ads, no account, and no stated usage limit | Fewer native-app and payment features |
| PayPal Bill Split | One-off collections | Quick payment requests | Not a persistent shared-expense ledger |
1. Splitwise: best all-purpose expense ledger
Best for: Roommates, couples, recurring household costs, and multi-day trips.
Splitwise is the most versatile choice when expenses continue beyond a single dinner or weekend. You can create a group or track expenses with one person, record who paid, and choose how the cost is divided. Equal splitting is only the default: Splitwise also supports exact amounts, percentages, shares, adjustments, and itemized expenses.

- Operating on just one AAA battery (not included), this calculator is designed with an automatic shutdown feature that activates after 10 minutes of inactivity, conserving battery life and ensuring longevity.
- Mr. Pen calculator is the perfect tool for quickly dealing with everyday calculation problems in various settings such as schools, offices, or even at home! It offers a fast, efficient, and user-friendly experience that makes it an ideal choice for anyone looking for a reliable calculator.
To change an expense split in the mobile app, use Add expense, then tap equally in the line that says “Paid by [name] and split [equally].” Choose a different split method or open More options.
When it is time to settle, open the relevant group or friendship and tap Settle up. You can record a cash or outside payment. In the U.S., available payment options listed by Splitwise include Splitwise Pay, PayPal, and Venmo, although integrations depend on platform and account conditions.
What to watch for
- The free plan allows only four expenses per day. Splitwise Pro removes that limit, so active travelers and large households may outgrow the free version quickly.
- Splitwise says its Venmo integration on Android has been incompatible since July 2, 2026, following a Venmo-side change. You can still pay directly in Venmo and record the payment in Splitwise.
- Simplify Debts reduces the number of payments by changing the recommended payment route. It does not change anyone’s overall balance or convert currencies. On mobile, enable it from the group’s gear icon; on the web, go to the gear icon, Edit group settings, and Advanced settings.
- Do not assume that deleting a settlement reverses money already sent. Deleting a cash-payment record restores the ledger, but deleting a Splitwise Pay, Venmo, or PayPal record does not undo the actual transfer.
Verdict: The best long-term option, provided four free expenses per day is enough or you are willing to pay for Pro.
2. Tricount: best for trips and temporary groups
Best for: Vacations, weekend trips, dinners, and groups that want straightforward shared tracking.
Recommended Free Tools
Tricount is designed around a shared group expense list rather than a permanent personal finance system. Create one by opening the app, tapping the + sign, and adding participants. To record a cost, open the tricount, tap +, and enter the expense.
The default split is equal. For an uneven split, tap Equally in the Split section and edit each participant’s share or amount. A reimbursement should be entered as an expense with the transaction type changed to transfer, so it is treated as a payment between participants rather than a new cost.

- Fundamental, two-line calculator that combines statistics and advanced scientific functions for high school math and science
- Two-line display shows the entry and calculated result at the same time for easy understanding of the calculation
- Fraction features, conversions, and basic scientific and trigonometric functions
- Solar and battery powered
- Approved for use on SAT, ACT and AP exams
Tricount supports up to 50 people, including the creator. It also provides balance calculations, settlement suggestions, payment requests, and a Splitwise importer on its current product pages.
What to watch for
- Removing a participant is currently documented as an Android-only process: open the top-right menu, choose Edit, tap the X beside the person, and select Save.
- The removal control may not appear while that participant is still included in open expenses. A removed person can settle an existing balance but cannot add new expenses.
- Tricount says its newer app has deprecated Tricount Premium. Be cautious with older articles that describe Premium as the current pricing structure.
- Manual expense entry remains available if you do not want to use the app’s current bunq-related signup flow.
Verdict: A strong travel choice when the group needs a shared calculator and ledger without setting up a complicated ongoing system.

Best for: Bills involving multiple payers, weighted shares, itemized purchases, or unreliable internet access.
Settle Up is available on Android, iOS, Windows, and the web. Its current Google Play listing says it works offline and does not require every participant to download the app. It supports weighted shares, multiple people paying one expense, incomes, recurring transactions, and itemized bills.
Tap a group member’s circle to create an expense with that person as payer. If the group receives money or someone returns money, add an income; Settle Up treats income as a negative expense. You can long-press a transaction to edit or duplicate it, and recurring transactions can be enabled from the bottom of a transaction’s detail screen.
For a roommate or traveler who leaves the group, do not immediately delete their profile. Edit the member and uncheck Include this member in new transactions. This preserves historical calculations while preventing new expenses from being assigned to them.

For foreign-currency expenses, Settle Up automatically downloads exchange rates from Yahoo. You can edit the rate on the transaction detail screen if your bank, card network, or cash exchange used a different rate.
What to watch for
- Premium features and pricing are explained in the app rather than through one universal price list.
- Automatic exchange rates may differ from the rate charged by a bank or card. Override the rate when everyone agrees to use one consistent conversion.
- Importing from Splitwise requires exporting data from Splitwise’s web app and importing it while creating the Settle Up group.
Verdict: The most capable choice for unusual bills, offline tracking, and expense splits that cannot be handled with a simple equal division.
4. Venmo Groups: best when everyone already uses Venmo
Best for: U.S. groups that want to calculate expenses and request repayment inside the same payment network.
To create a Venmo group, open the Me tab, tap Create a Group below your profile picture, choose Get started, and enter a name and emoji. You can add up to 30 people. Venmo friends are added immediately; non-friends must accept an invitation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To add a cost, go to Me → Groups hub → select the group → Add an expense. Enter the total and the “What’s this for” description. Venmo calculates each member’s share, and you can later tap the expense and use the pencil icon to add or remove people or adjust amounts.
To settle inside Venmo, open the group and tap Pay at the top of the activity feed. If someone paid outside Venmo, use Group summary → Members → Mark as paid → Mark as paid.

- LARGE EIGHT-DIGIT DISPLAY – Clear and easy-to-read 8-digit display, perfect for everyday calculations and ensuring accurate results in home or office settings.
- TAX & CURRENCY EXCHANGE FUNCTIONS – Effortlessly handle tax calculations and convert home currency to other currencies for easy financial management.
- GENERAL PURPOSE CALCULATOR – Ideal for a wide range of applications, from basic math to business and personal use, with memory keys for quick storage and recall.
- USER-FRIENDLY KEYBOARD – Easy-to-use layout, featuring square root, percent calculation, and simple functions that make it perfect for everyday tasks.
- COMPACT & PORTABLE DESIGN – Space-saving design that fits easily on any desk or in a briefcase, making it ideal for both home and office use.
What to watch for
- Creating a split does not automatically debit anyone. Each member must complete their payment request before money reaches the requester.
- A non-friend who has not accepted the invitation is not fully participating in the group.
- Venmo Groups are a poor fit for international, multi-currency travel or groups containing people who cannot use Venmo.
Verdict: The least-friction option if every participant is already comfortable with Venmo. Otherwise, a standalone ledger is more flexible.
5. Spliit: best free, no-account web option
Best for: One-off dinners, trips, and groups that do not want accounts, ads, subscriptions, or app downloads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSpliit is an open-source progressive web app. Its current site says it is free, requires no account, has no advertising, and has no usage limitation. It supports groups, categories, unequal splits by percentage, shares, or amount, reimbursements, receipt attachments, balances, and receipt scanning.
Because it runs in a browser, participants can open the shared group without installing a conventional native app. The project can also be self-hosted, which may appeal to technically minded users who want more control over deployment.
What to watch for
- A no-account service still deserves privacy consideration. The project supports receipt images through an S3-compatible storage setup, and optional receipt extraction requires an OpenAI API key and public S3 storage.
- Features can differ between the public service and self-hosted installations. Verify receipt scanning, recurring expenses, and import features on the specific instance you use.
- Treat the shared group URL as sensitive. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the group, so do not post it publicly.
Verdict: The best lightweight option for free, browser-based sharing, but not the best fit for native notifications, integrated payments, or a long-term expense history.

Best for: A single dinner, purchase, or group cost where collecting a known amount matters more than maintaining a ledger.

On the PayPal website, use Pay & Get Paid → Get Paid, enter the people, choose Next, select Split a bill, and enter the amount. PayPal creates a money request for each selected person.
PayPal also offers a link-based request flow in the app: Send/Request → Send and request money with a link → enter the amount → Request → Create PayPal Link → Share PayPal Link. A recipient must log in to PayPal to pay, and an unclaimed link expires after 10 days.
What to watch for
- A payment link can be claimed by anyone who obtains it, and it can be used only once. Send it privately rather than posting it publicly.
- For a personal expense, choose Sending to a friend, not Paying for an item or service. PayPal says U.S. personal payments funded by a bank account or PayPal balance are generally free, while card funding can incur a fee.
- PayPal is not a full expense ledger. It does not replace an app that tracks who consumed each item, recurring expenses, or a group’s running balance.
- A payment sent with the wrong type or amount generally cannot simply be canceled; the sender may need to request a refund.
Verdict: Excellent for a quick collection request, but use Splitwise, Tricount, or Settle Up when you need a record of how the bill was divided.
How to choose the right bill-splitting app
- Decide whether you need a ledger or a payment tool. Use Splitwise, Tricount, Settle Up, or Spliit to track expenses over time. Use PayPal when the amount is already known and the main job is requesting payment.
- Check the group’s location and payment habits. Venmo Groups make sense for U.S. Venmo users, while a dedicated ledger is safer for mixed payment methods or international groups.
- Choose your split complexity. Equal dinner bills need almost any app. Itemized restaurant checks, weighted shares, multiple payers, and reimbursements point toward Settle Up or Splitwise.
- Check limits before the trip starts. Splitwise’s four-expense daily free limit and Venmo’s 30-person group limit are easy to encounter. Tricount allows up to 50 participants.
- Agree on the process before entering expenses. Decide who records receipts, whether tips are included, which currency to use, and when everyone will settle. This prevents duplicate entries and arguments over exchange rates.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a recorded payment with a reversed payment. Removing a payment from an app may correct the ledger without returning the money.
- Deleting people instead of closing their participation. Preserve historical records by disabling a departed member for future transactions where the app supports that option.
- Assuming automatic collection. A split or request normally does not pull money from another person’s account without that person completing the payment.
- Using a public payment link. A one-time PayPal link can be claimed by whoever receives it.
- Relying on old pricing pages. Product plans change; Tricount Premium, in particular, is described as deprecated in its current FAQ.
FAQ
What is the best bill-splitting app overall?
Splitwise is the best general-purpose option for roommates, couples, recurring bills, and trips because it supports multiple split methods and keeps a running ledger. Its free plan currently allows only four expenses per day.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which bill-splitting app is best for a vacation?
Tricount is a strong choice for temporary travel groups, especially when several people need to add expenses. Settle Up is better if the trip involves offline use, weighted shares, multiple payers, or detailed currency adjustments.
Can bill-splitting apps automatically take money from participants?
Usually not. Most apps calculate balances and send requests; participants still need to approve or complete payments. A recorded outside payment updates the ledger but does not itself move money.
Are no-account bill-splitting apps safe to use?
They can be convenient, but a shared group link should be treated as sensitive. With Spliit, avoid posting the link publicly and review how receipt images and optional document-processing features are handled.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Splitwise for ongoing household or friendship expenses, Tricount for a typical group trip, and Settle Up for complex or offline calculations. Venmo Groups is convenient when every U.S. participant already uses Venmo. Spliit is the best no-account free option, while PayPal is better for requesting a known payment than for tracking a shared budget.
