Short answer: 5G smartphones did become mainstream in 2025, but the word “surge” needs qualification. IDC’s June 2024 forecast called for 5G handset shipments to grow 13.2% in 2025 and reach 74.4% of all smartphone shipments. Counterpoint’s preliminary data later put 5G at 71% of worldwide smartphone shipments in the first half of 2025, while total smartphone shipments grew only about 2% for the year. The big change was the migration from LTE to 5G, not an explosion in total handset demand.
What is actually being measured?
Market reports use several different measures, and they are not interchangeable:
- Shipments are phones sent into distributors, retailers, operators or other channels. They are not the same as consumer purchases.
- Sell-through is a device bought by an end user.
- 5G smartphone shipments count smartphones with 5G cellular capability. The exact bands and standards covered depend on the tracker.
- 5G share is 5G shipments divided by all smartphone shipments.
- Installed base is the stock of active phones already in use.
- Revenue can rise through premium 5G models even when unit shipments are flat.
Accordingly, a higher 5G shipment share does not prove that users have 5G subscriptions, live in 5G coverage, or experience faster service. Network coverage, spectrum, congestion, handset antennas, carrier certification and data plans all affect actual use.
The forecast timeline: from optimism to a more modest market
| Publication and date | Measure | Forecast or result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDC, June 2024 | 5G smartphone shipments | +15.9% in 2024; +13.2% in 2025 | 5G-specific forecast, not total-market growth |
| IDC, June 2024 | 5G share of smartphone shipments | 67.2% in 2024; 74.4% forecast for 2025 | Share growth can be strong even if total units barely rise |
| Counterpoint, February 27, 2025 | Total smartphone shipments | More than 4% growth expected in 2025 | Expectation included China’s new subsidy program and market recovery |
| Counterpoint, June 4, 2025 | Total smartphone shipments | Forecast cut to 1.9% growth | Tariff uncertainty, weaker demand and possible price increases changed the outlook |
| Counterpoint, H1 2025 | 5G share of global shipments | 71% | Half-year observation from a different provider and period than IDC’s full-year forecast |
| Counterpoint preliminary 2025 result | Total smartphone shipments | Approximately +2% | Preliminary estimate; methodology differs from IDC and Omdia |
The comparison shows why one headline can mislead. IDC’s 13.2% figure concerns the 5G segment. Counterpoint’s 1.9% and approximately 2% figures concern the entire smartphone market. If buyers replace 4G phones with 5G models, 5G units and share can climb while total handset volume remains nearly flat.

How large was the underlying smartphone market?
Omdia’s preliminary 2024 table listed approximately 1.223 billion smartphone shipments, up from about 1.142 billion in 2023, or roughly 7.1% growth. Counterpoint’s 2024 estimate was closer to 4%. Those totals should not be blended into one definitive series: trackers differ in channel coverage, shipment timing, brand classification and revision practices.
That disagreement is normal in a channel-based market. A new model launch, a subsidy, inventory building or concern about tariffs can pull shipments forward without representing equivalent consumer sell-through.
Why 5G shipments expanded
Lower-cost components and broader portfolios
More integrated modem-and-application platforms, mature radio designs and competition among MediaTek, Qualcomm, Samsung, UNISOC and Chinese vendors allowed manufacturers to put 5G into lower-priced models. Reusing proven platforms also reduced development risk. Prices still vary sharply by country because of taxes, duties, currency movements and local distribution; “5G” is not synonymous with inexpensive.

Replacement cycles
Many purchases were ordinary upgrades prompted by battery wear, software-support concerns, cameras, displays, trade-in offers, financing or carrier programs. When 5G is standard on a new model, a buyer may adopt it without choosing the phone specifically for network speed.

Coverage expansion and spectrum deployment make a 5G phone a safer long-term purchase. The effect is uneven, however. Where LTE already meets most needs or 5G coverage is sparse, buyers have less reason to pay a premium.
Subsidies, financing and premiumization
Counterpoint’s February 2025 outlook cited China’s nationwide smartphone subsidy program, launched in January, as an upward influence. Its June revision said the response was weaker than expected and moved China toward near-flat growth. Installment plans, trade-ins and carrier discounts also supported premium devices, while premiumization lifted revenue even without a large increase in units.

5G as an enabler for AI services
Counterpoint describes 5G as an enabler for cloud and hybrid generative-AI experiences (analysis). That does not mean 5G caused the AI-phone market. Replacement needs, cameras, battery life, ecosystem preference, financing and price remained more immediate purchase factors for most buyers.
Regional leaders and laggards
Asia-Pacific
Asia-Pacific represented more than half of global smartphone shipments in Counterpoint’s Q1 2025 data. Japan was a standout, with shipments up 29% year over year in that quarter (Counterpoint). China combines enormous volume, intense domestic-brand competition and subsidy effects. India offers a huge 4G-to-5G migration opportunity but remains highly price-sensitive. Japan and South Korea are mature, replacement-led 5G markets, while Southeast Asia has expanding coverage but uneven affordability.

Counterpoint recorded 8% year-over-year shipment growth in North America in Q1 2025, the fastest growth among major regions at that point (Q1 data). Later tariff concerns and potential price increases threatened to weaken the rest of the year (June revision). Because 5G penetration was already high, the region’s growth was mainly replacement and model-mix driven.

Europe
Europe’s market is mature and replacement-led. Consumer confidence, promotions, financing and affordable model availability mattered more than first-time 5G adoption. Economic uncertainty kept forecasts sensitive to pricing and household budgets.
Latin America, the Middle East and Africa
These regions have substantial 4G-to-5G potential but also the sharpest affordability constraints. Counterpoint found that the ten countries with the lowest 5G shipment shares averaged only 15% in H1 2025 (country analysis). Import duties, currency volatility, local assembly, financing, network investment and data-plan costs can matter as much as handset specifications.

Shares are shipments, not profit, revenue, installed base or technological leadership. In the 5G segment specifically, Counterpoint reported Apple at 32% and Samsung at 16% in Q4 2024. Xiaomi had the fastest 5G growth among the top five, up 33% year over year, driven by China, India and Russia (Counterpoint). Transsion brands remain important in Africa and lower-income markets, although 5G availability differs by model. Huawei is a separate China-focused case shaped by domestic demand, self-developed components and geopolitical restrictions.

What could limit further growth?
- Tariffs and price pass-through: Higher landed costs can delay purchases or shift demand toward older and cheaper models.
- Consumer confidence: A replacement can be postponed when household budgets tighten.
- Network economics: Delayed spectrum allocation, weak coverage or expensive 5G plans reduce the value of a 5G handset.
- Limited exclusive applications: Most smartphone functions do not require 5G, especially on uncongested LTE networks.
- Inventory corrections: Channel shipments can rise before demand and fall later when retailers rebalance stock.
- Affordability trade-offs: Low-cost 5G models may compromise on cameras, displays, storage, software support, charging or carrier-band compatibility.
Forecast versus reality: was it really a surge?
On the technology-mix measure, yes. A 71% global 5G shipment share in H1 2025 was close in direction to IDC’s 74.4% full-year forecast. On the total-market measure, no. Counterpoint’s preliminary approximately 2% growth was far below the more than 4% expectation published in February and close to its revised 1.9% forecast in June.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore three-part: 5G became the default technology in many mature and upper-middle-income markets; lower-cost models broadened adoption in emerging markets; and total smartphone demand expanded only modestly. Shipments also reflect channel timing, so even a strong 5G share does not prove equal growth in consumer usage or active subscriptions.
Quick Recap
What the 2025 result means for decision-makers
- Device makers: Growth opportunities moved toward affordable 5G tiers, local bands and financing rather than only premium flagships.
- Component suppliers: Volume depends on cost-down designs and emerging-market qualification as much as on peak modem performance.
- Operators: Coverage, pricing and upgrade programs remain necessary to turn device capability into network usage.
- Investors and analysts: Track 5G share, absolute units, average selling price, sell-through and inventory separately.
- Consumers: Check local coverage, bands, plan pricing and software support; a 5G label alone does not guarantee a better experience.
