You can often reduce loan interest by paying principal sooner, targeting high-rate debts, using an eligible autopay discount, comparing offers by total cost, or refinancing when the full tradeoff works in your favor. Which options help depends on the loan type, its interest method and contract, and any fees or protections attached to it.
1. Pay extra toward principal when it will reduce interest
For a balance-based simple-interest loan, paying principal earlier generally lowers the balance on which future interest is calculated. The CFPB explains: “The quicker you’re able to pay down the principal of your loan – or the amount of money you’re borrowing – the less interest you’ll have to pay.” CFPB: paying interest or principal on an auto loan.
First check how the lender calculates interest. With a simple-interest auto loan, interest is based on the outstanding balance. With a precomputed-interest loan, interest is calculated in advance, so extra payments may not reduce the cost in the same way. CFPB: simple and precomputed auto-loan interest
How the servicer applies an extra payment also matters. Payments commonly go to fees and interest before principal, and an amount above what is due may be treated as an advance toward a future payment unless you instruct the servicer to apply it to principal. Ask how to make a principal-only payment and confirm the account reflects it. For student loans, see the CFPB’s explanation of payment application.

Before making a large extra payment or paying off an auto loan early, review your contract for prepayment terms and check whether state law affects any penalty. The CFPB explains what to check before prepaying an auto loan.
2. Put extra debt payments toward the highest rate
If you have several loans, keep paying at least the required minimum on each, then direct available extra money to the balance with the highest interest rate. This approach typically reduces interest more efficiently than spreading extra payments evenly across debts with different rates. The CFPB recommends this strategy for student loans in its student-loan repayment guidance.

Compare rates carefully: a loan’s interest rate is not the same as its APR, and different rates or loan terms can make a simple comparison misleading. This strategy is about interest cost; you may also weigh other considerations, such as cash-flow needs or a loan’s borrower protections.
3. Use autopay if the discount is real and affordable
Some lenders reduce the rate when payments are made by automatic debit. The CFPB reports that direct debit can reduce the rate on some federal student loans by 0.25 percentage points, and that many private lenders offer a similar discount. This is not a universal benefit: confirm with your servicer that your specific loan qualifies, how enrollment works, and whether the reduction continues under your circumstances. Autopay should fit your budget and account balance. Keep enough money available on the withdrawal date, and check whether the discount depends on an active bank account or other conditions in the lender’s terms.
4. Compare loan offers by APR and total cost
The interest rate tells you the cost of borrowing before certain fees; APR incorporates the rate and certain loan fees. Compare APR with APR for offers with similar terms, and examine the fees and repayment schedule rather than choosing by the advertised rate or monthly payment alone. The CFPB explains the distinction between interest rate and APR.

For a useful offer comparison, check:
- APR and fees, including any points or closing costs
- Fixed versus adjustable rate, and how an adjustable rate may change
- Monthly payment and the new repayment term
- Total interest and fees over the same period you expect to keep the loan
- Any prepayment penalty, and protections or benefits you would lose by changing loans
Mortgage offers need particular care: a lower payment can reflect a longer term, and a “no closing costs” offer may shift costs elsewhere or come with a higher rate. Compare costs over the period you realistically expect to keep the mortgage, not just the full scheduled term if you expect to move or refinance sooner. The CFPB provides guidance on comparing mortgage offers.

A lower interest rate can reduce borrowing costs, but refinancing may also add fees or extend repayment. A longer term can mean more total interest even if the new monthly payment is lower. Compare the new loan with your current loan using the same expected holding period, including fees and any early-payoff charge.

Federal student-loan borrowers should be especially cautious about refinancing into a private loan: doing so can mean giving up federal repayment options and protections. Review the differences before changing loan type. The CFPB discusses student-loan consolidation and refinancing and the tradeoffs of refinancing student loans.
Using home equity to pay student debt brings a different risk: the debt may become secured by your home. Do not compare the new rate in isolation; account for the consequences of putting the home at risk. Mortgage APR and refinancing considerations are covered in the CFPB’s mortgage guidance.
How to choose the right move for your loan
Before changing payments or replacing a loan, identify the loan type, interest method, current balance and rate, remaining term, fees, and relevant contract terms. For an auto loan, check whether extra principal payments reduce interest and whether a prepayment penalty applies. For student loans, verify payment allocation, autopay eligibility, and any federal benefits you could lose. For a mortgage, compare APR, points, fees, rate type, and cost over your expected time in the home. The right choice is the one that lowers your total cost without creating a larger risk or losing benefits you value.
