Amazon Staff recommends clearing cache and cookies, relaunching Amazon, and updating the app for add-to-cart problems; for persistent issues, contact Amazon Customer Service. These are low-risk troubleshooting steps supported by Amazon forum guidance and a third-party guide updated June 30, 2024—not a guarantee that every cart error has the same cause.
1. Refresh Amazon and clear browser data
A stale session or cached data can interfere with a site or app, so begin with a refresh. In an Amazon Forums answer dated February 15, 2023, Amazon Staff member Jaspreet advised: “Please try clearing cache and cookies and relaunching the site or the App and check again. Also, make sure that you are using the latest version of the app.” This is a practical first check, not a diagnosis of every cart failure.
- In a browser: Clear the browser’s cache and cookies, close and reopen Amazon, sign in again if needed, and retry.
- In the app: Close and relaunch the Amazon Shopping app, then try the action again.
Read the Amazon Forums response about adding an item to the cart.
2. Update the Amazon Shopping app
If the problem is in the app, check your device’s app store for an Amazon Shopping update and install it if one is available. Amazon Staff recommends using the latest app version for an add-to-cart problem and checking for updates when the in-app cart will not open.

3. Reinstall the app if updating does not help
If there is no update available—or updating has not fixed an app-specific cart problem—Amazon Staff suggests uninstalling and reinstalling the app. This advice applies to the shopping app; it is not a general fix for browser checkout errors. Sign back in after reinstalling and check whether the cart opens.

4. Find out whether the issue is one item or the whole cart
A 2024 third-party troubleshooting guide recommends checking stock and connectivity, restarting the app, and trying Amazon’s website if the app remains problematic. These are diagnostic checks, not official Amazon guarantees.
- Only one product fails: Check the product page for availability and buying options. An item that cannot currently be purchased may behave differently from other products.
- Several products fail in the app: Check your connection, restart the app, and try the same action on Amazon’s website in a browser.
- The same problem appears on multiple devices or access routes: The issue may not be limited to one app installation. Contact Amazon if the basic checks do not resolve it.
The third-party guide was updated June 30, 2024.
5. Contact Amazon if the error persists
If you still cannot add an item, open the cart, or check out after the relevant app or browser checks, use Amazon’s Customer Service Home Page. Amazon says it is available in the app and on desktop. This is especially appropriate when the problem appears account-specific or prevents checkout.

Keyboard shortcuts on an Amazon page
If the issue is specifically with keyboard navigation, Amazon’s help page says to move focus out of a text input and close another open widget, such as a popup or menu, before retrying a shortcut. This guidance concerns keyboard shortcuts, not general cart failures.
