Boeing’s St. Louis operation develops, produces, modernizes and sustains defense aircraft and systems. The company identifies St. Louis as the headquarters of Boeing Defense, Space and Security; its regional work spans fighters and trainers, naval aircraft, unmanned aircraft, precision weapons and advanced engineering.
1. Develops and supports fighter and trainer aircraft
Boeing’s St. Louis-area engineering listings connect local teams with fighter and tactical aircraft programs, including the F-15, F/A-18 and T-7A trainer. The work includes development, production and sustainment, but Boeing’s public listing does not break down which tasks take place at each facility or on each aircraft.
2. Produces and modernizes the F/A-18 and EA-18G
Boeing specifically says its St. Louis teammates produce and modernize the F/A-18 Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler. The Super Hornet is a carrier-based fighter; the Growler is an electronic-warfare aircraft. Boeing’s March 26, 2025 account of a Navy deployment described pilots’ use of the aircraft for roles including countering uncrewed aircraft, aerial refueling and surveillance. Those are deployment-context observations attributed to the pilots, not a complete list of the aircraft’s capabilities.
Navy Capt. Marvin J. Scott, quoted by Boeing in that account, said: “The Super Hornet’s capabilities continued to evolve even as we were deployed. It made the difference between being able to defend something or not.”

3. Develops the MQ-25, with production in the wider St. Louis region
The MQ-25A Stingray is Boeing’s carrier-based unmanned aircraft for the U.S. Navy, with aerial refueling as its primary mission. Boeing reports that the first Navy engineering development aircraft moved to a new production facility at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport and entered final assembly on March 11, 2025. That airport is in Mascoutah, Illinois—not the city of St. Louis—so the program’s production connection is regional.
Boeing’s program page reports the aircraft completed its first taxi test on January 29, 2026. That is a dated milestone; it should not be read as a statement that the aircraft has entered operational service.

4. Supports precision engagement systems
Boeing’s St. Louis-area engineering listing names the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) and Small Diameter Bomb among the precision engagement systems associated with local teams. These are program-family connections: the listing does not identify which components or production steps are handled at each site.
5. Conducts advanced research, prototyping and digital engineering
Boeing describes Phantom Works as its advanced research, development and prototyping division, and its St. Louis-area opportunities include work associated with the F-47 program. The company’s Missouri careers page also describes a $1.8 billion advanced facility intended for digital engineering and aviation. That is Boeing’s stated investment figure; the page does not provide an independently verified cost or a completion date.

What the five areas show
The region’s Boeing work covers both established aircraft programs and developing systems, as well as research and engineering. The MQ-25 facility illustrates why “St. Louis” can mean the wider metropolitan area: that production site is across the state line in Illinois. Boeing’s public pages associate programs with the area but do not provide a site-by-site comparison of workforce, output or contract value.
