For buyers and sellers, the practical shortlist is Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Phillips and Bonhams—compared by category fit, sale format and the scope of their reported results, not by an apples-to-oranges league table.
Why there is no definitive top-five ranking
A house’s reported sales can mean all-channel business, auction-only sales or results for one department. Those measures answer different questions. For example, Sotheby’s 2025 figure covers all categories and channels, Christie’s figure distinguishes projected global sales from auction sales, and Phillips reports both global sales and a watch-auction result. Bonhams’ reviewed 2025 year-in-review describes category breadth but does not provide a directly comparable house-wide total.
For that reason, the four houses below are an editorial shortlist of major multinational options, not a verified rank from first to fourth. The evidence does not support naming a fifth house as the next-largest or best luxury auctioneer on the same basis. A fifth choice depends on the buyer’s or seller’s geography, category and preferred measure.
Four major luxury auction houses to compare
Christie’s: broad category coverage
Christie’s reported projected global sales of $6.2 billion in 2025, including $4.7 billion in auction sales. The distinction matters: the $4.7 billion is the auction-sales component, not the total. The company says it offers about 50,000 objects annually across more than 80 categories, including fine art, jewelry, handbags, wine, watches, cars, design, rare books and memorabilia. This breadth may make Christie’s worth considering when a consignment spans multiple kinds of property. Christie’s 2025 sales announcement.

Sotheby’s: large all-channel scale
Art Basel and UBS report that Sotheby’s recorded $7.1 billion in sales across all categories and channels in 2025, up 18% from 2024. This is an all-channel figure, not an auction-only total, so it should not be ranked directly against Christie’s $4.7 billion in auction sales or Phillips’ category-specific watch result. The report establishes scale under its stated measure, not a like-for-like auction ranking. Art Basel and UBS, The Art Basel and UBS Art Market Report 2026.
Phillips: a documented strength in watches
Phillips reported $927 million in global sales in 2025 and more than $290 million in annual watch auction sales. The watch figure is a department-specific auction result, not a separate house-wide total. It provides evidence of a substantial watch business, but does not by itself establish that Phillips is the best choice for every watch or seller. Phillips’ 2025 results announcement.
Rank #2
Bonhams: breadth across more than 60 categories
Bonhams’ 2025 year-in-review describes results across more than 60 categories and highlights art, jewelry, collectibles and entertainment-related property. The reviewed year-in-review does not state a directly comparable house-wide sales total, so Bonhams cannot be placed in a numerical sales ranking alongside the figures above. Its reported category range makes it a relevant house to investigate when the item fits one of its departments. Bonhams, “Year in Review, 2025”.
How to choose a house for a luxury item
Match the department to the property
Start with the exact item—not the auction house’s overall reputation. A specialist department and a relevant sale calendar matter for art, jewelry, watches, handbags, wine, cars, design or collectibles. Christie’s published list illustrates broad category coverage; Phillips’ watch results illustrate a specific area of strength. Neither fact is a universal quality rating. Ask the house whether it handles that type of property and which upcoming sale is appropriate.
Rank #3
Compare like with like
When looking at sales figures, check what each number includes. An all-channel total may include business beyond auctions; an auction total is narrower; a department result describes one category. Keep the stated year and scope attached to the figure, and do not infer that a house with a larger number is necessarily better for a particular object.
Check location and sale format
Find out where the relevant sale will take place and whether it is live, online or private. The figures and category summaries cited here do not provide a comparable geographic breakdown or a current sale-format schedule. Confirm those details directly with the house for the item and location involved.
Assess the service for your side of the transaction
If you are selling, compare the valuation and consignment process for your specific property. If you are buying, review the relevant sale details and requirements before bidding. A broad house can be convenient for cross-category needs, while a focused department may be more suitable for a single category; the available figures alone cannot settle that choice.

| House | Reported 2025 measure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Christie’s | $6.2 billion projected global sales, including $4.7 billion in auction sales | Company-reported; global sales and auction-sales component are distinct. Source. |
| Sotheby’s | $7.1 billion, up 18% from 2024 | Art Basel and UBS report; all categories and channels, not auction-only. Source. |
| Phillips | $927 million global sales; more than $290 million in watch auction sales | Company-reported; the watch figure is category-specific. Source. |
| Bonhams | More than 60 categories | Company year-in-review describes category breadth; comparable house-wide sales total not stated. Source. |
These figures are useful context, not a clean league table. They differ in scope and attribution, and Bonhams’ cited year-in-review does not supply the same kind of total. Use each number only for the measure it actually reports.

How to approach a fifth house
Choose a fifth auction house only after defining the comparison. For a regional seller, local presence and the sale venue may be the deciding factors; for a watch buyer, the relevant department and sale calendar may matter more than overall size. The evidence here does not identify a fifth house that can be fairly ranked against Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Phillips and Bonhams with a comparable luxury-specific metric.
