5 Lowest-Paid Head Coaches in the NFL? What Reported Estimates Show

Available 2026 reporting offers a partial salary snapshot, not a verified ranking of the five lowest-paid active NFL head coaches.

There is no reliable, complete ranking of the five lowest-paid active NFL head coaches in the available reporting. Front Office Sports’ Jan. 6, 2026 table covers the 20 highest-paid coaches—not the full league—so its lowest figures offer a partial snapshot, not a verified bottom-five list. Here are the figures it reports and how they compare with other published estimates.

What the reported figures show

Front Office Sports’ Jan. 6, 2026 table lists four coaches at the low end of its 20 highest-paid group. The figures are reported compensation estimates, not independently verified contract disclosures.

Coach Team Front Office Sports estimate Coverage
Dave Canales Carolina Panthers $3.5 million Jan. 6, 2026 table of the 20 highest-paid coaches
Shane Steichen Indianapolis Colts $4 million Jan. 6, 2026 table of the 20 highest-paid coaches
Zac Taylor Cincinnati Bengals $4.5 million Jan. 6, 2026 table of the 20 highest-paid coaches
Matt LaFleur Green Bay Packers $5 million Jan. 6, 2026 table of the 20 highest-paid coaches

Because the table omits coaches outside its top 20, it cannot establish that these are the league’s four lowest-paid coaches. It also leaves the fifth spot in a requested five-name list unsupported. No official league-wide salary register or independently published statistic for the bottom five is established by these sources.

Why estimates for the same coach differ

Other published figures do not line up consistently with Front Office Sports’ snapshot. BetUS’s 2026 estimates put Canales in a range of $2 million to $5 million and LaFleur in a range of $8 million to $9 million. The BetUS range for Canales includes the Front Office Sports estimate, but it is not a single confirmed salary; its LaFleur estimate conflicts with the $5 million figure from Front Office Sports.

Coach Publication and date Reported figure What the figure represents
Dave Canales Front Office Sports, Jan. 6, 2026 $3.5 million Single estimate in a table of the 20 highest-paid coaches
Dave Canales BetUS, 2026 $2 million–$5 million Estimated range
Matt LaFleur Front Office Sports, Jan. 6, 2026 $5 million Single estimate in a table of the 20 highest-paid coaches
Matt LaFleur BetUS, 2026 $8 million–$9 million Estimated range; conflicts with Front Office Sports’ figure

These estimates should not be averaged or treated as disclosed contract terms. The publications do not provide a consistent, league-wide method in the cited material that would make their figures directly comparable.

Why an older salary list can mislead

Coach employment changes, so a salary estimate does not by itself show that someone is an active head coach on the date a list is read. Unanswered.io published a 2026 figure of $3.5 million for Kevin Stefanski in an article updated Aug. 28, 2026. However, NFL.com’s January 2026 coaching tracker reported that Stefanski had been fired. He should not be counted as a current head coach at the Oct. 7, 2026 cutoff, regardless of the salary estimate.

Any comparison should therefore identify both the estimate’s publication date and whether the person still held a head-coaching job at the relevant date.

Can these sources name the five lowest-paid NFL head coaches?

No. The available figures support a dated partial snapshot and illustrate why salary lists can disagree, but they do not provide a complete, consistent ranking of all active coaches. Naming a fifth coach or ordering the league’s bottom five would require filling gaps with unsupported estimates.
