The right KYC provider depends on where you operate, which checks your obligations require, and how your onboarding works—not on a universal “best” ranking. This retrospective shortlist covers Sumsub, Veriff, Stripe Identity, Jumio, and Entrust Identity Verification (formerly Onfido). Current vendor materials support more detailed comparisons of the first three; the evidence available for Jumio and Entrust/Onfido is thinner, so treat them as candidates to verify rather than proven recommendations.

What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you

KYC (know your customer) software can combine identity-document checks, biometric or liveness checks, database verification, proof of address, sanctions and politically exposed person (PEP) screening, business verification (KYB), and ongoing monitoring. Those capabilities may be separate products, configurations, or jurisdiction-dependent methods. Confirm what is available for your exact markets and use case.

The vendor figures below are claims on product pages or documentation accessed on October 8, 2026; they are not independent head-to-head results. No comparable independent accuracy or performance test was established for these providers. A third-party comparison names several candidates, but its entries are leads to verify—not a basis for ranking vendors.

Provider What the available evidence supports What to verify before treating it as a fit
Sumsub Official documentation describes document, biometric, data-source, NFC, and video methods, plus SDK/API integration and sandbox testing. Exact country and document coverage, included checks, workflow fit, and contract pricing for your expected volumes.
Veriff Its official product page describes identity verification and related checks including proof of address, database checks, age validation, AML screening, and fraud tools. Availability of each check in your markets, workflow and support terms, and pricing for your configuration. Product-page customer results are not a cross-provider benchmark.
Stripe Identity Stripe describes government-ID verification, selfie matching, ID-number and address checks, and integration with Stripe services. Whether the checks, displayed prices, data terms, and integrations fit your region and account; displayed rates are locale-specific.
Jumio Its official page confirms an identity-verification product. Coverage, checks, integration, pricing, and independent performance evidence are not stated in the retrieved Jumio page extract.
Entrust Identity Verification (formerly Onfido) A third-party comparison identifies Onfido as part of Entrust and includes it among identity and KYC services. Current product naming and configuration, coverage, pricing, and comparative performance are not stated in that comparison.

Which providers are worth evaluating?

1. Sumsub: flexible verification methods to assess across markets

Sumsub’s documentation describes identity verification using documents and, depending on market, use case, and regulatory requirements, methods such as trusted data sources, biometrics, NFC chip reading, and video interviews. It distinguishes standard document onboarding, database-supported non-document checks with document fallback, higher-assurance document flows, and regulated or regional methods that may require NFC or video. That range makes it a candidate to evaluate when a business needs different verification paths for different users or markets.

  • Advanced Fake ID Detection - Includes two features; a free subscription to Barcode Detective, which uses hidden barcode data to detect fake IDs. Advanced checks identify typos, jumbled info, misplaced data, and secret codes and a DMVCheck, a pay-per-use service that verifies scanned IDs with issuing DMVs in 40+ states.
  • No Ongoing Fees - Lifetime software upgrades and complimentary US-based phone/email support included. No subscription fees required

Sumsub states that it supports 220+ countries and territories, 14,000+ ID-document types, and flows in 50+ languages. Its documentation also describes OCR capture and says validity and authenticity checks complete within 20 seconds. These are vendor-stated coverage and process claims, not independent findings about accuracy or how a particular customer’s flow will perform.

For implementation, Sumsub documents SDK or API integration, sandbox testing, verification levels, and configurable country and document settings. In a proof of concept, test how those controls handle unavailable database checks, document fallback, retries, and cases that need manual review. Pricing was not stated in the material reviewed; request a quote that defines charges for successful, failed, retried, and manually reviewed cases.

2. Veriff: a broad set of checks described on its product page

Veriff’s official product page describes identity and document verification, proof of address, database checks, age validation, AML screening, biometric authentication, age estimation, and fraud tools. It states support for more than 12,500 government-issued IDs and 50 languages. Confirm which checks and documents are actually available in each launch market; a headline coverage count does not establish availability or performance for your target population.

Veriff says its enterprise solutions include support and that self-service pricing has no additional setup, implementation, maintenance, or support charges; the page also mentions volume discounts for enterprise pricing. Treat these as vendor statements and confirm what applies to your chosen plan and contract, including any services or case types that may be billed separately.

The product page includes customer-specific verification and extraction results. Those are vendor-reported outcomes for particular customer scenarios, not a controlled comparison or a general accuracy guarantee. Ask for evidence relevant to your documents, user population, and risk model rather than using those examples to infer that Veriff outperforms another provider.

3. Stripe Identity: a natural candidate to assess in Stripe-based workflows

Stripe describes verification for government IDs from more than 100 countries, document-data extraction, selfie matching, ID-number and address checks, and a prebuilt capture interface for mobile and web. Its page states localization in 53 languages and positions Identity alongside Stripe payments, subscriptions, payouts, and Connect. Those integrations may suit a business already using Stripe, but assess the identity workflow on its own merits and confirm the precise functionality available to your account and region.

The Spain-English Stripe page accessed on October 8, 2026 displayed €1.25 per successful ID-document/selfie verification and €0.40 per US Social Security number lookup. It also displayed the first 50 verifications free and invited businesses above 2,000 verifications per month, or with a unique business model, to discuss alternative pricing. These are page-specific figures, not universal rates or guaranteed contract terms; check the current price for your locale and clarify billing for failures, retries, and other check types.

Stripe says it supports user consent, restricted API keys, programmatic deletion, and AES-256 encryption at rest, and that it stores verification data on behalf of customers. These are vendor descriptions, not a substitute for reviewing current terms, security documentation, retention settings, and data-residency requirements with your legal and security teams.

4. Jumio: include it in a shortlist, then validate the details directly

Jumio’s official page confirms that it offers identity verification, which is enough to make it a candidate for a procurement shortlist. The page extract available for this comparison did not establish comparable detail about country or document coverage, workflow, pricing, or independently measured results. Ask Jumio for current official documentation and test the relevant flows before making a scored comparison.

5. Entrust Identity Verification (formerly Onfido): confirm the current product and scope

A third-party comparison identifies “Onfido (part of Entrust)” and lists it among identity and KYC services. That supports considering the provider, but does not establish current product naming, configuration, regional coverage, pricing, or comparative performance. Confirm the present product and capabilities with Entrust’s official materials before evaluating it against vendors with more fully documented details.

How to choose a KYC provider for your business

Start with your obligations and actual onboarding journeys, not a vendor’s largest coverage number. Score each provider against the same requirements and record whether each answer is independently validated, required by a regulator, or stated by the vendor.

  • Markets and documents: List launch countries, expected user populations, required identity documents, and fallback methods when a database check is unavailable. Validate actual country-document combinations.
  • Checks and risk: Specify whether you need document authenticity, liveness and face matching, database checks, proof of address, AML/PEP/sanctions screening, KYB, or ongoing monitoring. Verify what is included, optional, or separately configured.
  • User experience: Assess capture flows, localization, accessibility, retry rules, and whether you can step up checks only when needed. Check how the flow handles a poor image, unsupported document, or failed verification.
  • Integration and operations: Compare hosted flows with SDK/API options, sandbox quality, workflow and webhook fit, implementation effort, support, manual-review queues, and exception handling.
  • Privacy and security: Review consent, data minimization, retention and deletion, access controls, encryption, security certifications, and data residency against your own legal and security requirements.
  • Total cost: Compare the same unit and geography. Ask about successful checks, failed attempts, retries, manual reviews, monthly minimums, volume discounts, and implementation or support charges; calculate against forecast case volumes.
  • Evidence quality: Separate independent testing and applicable regulatory requirements from vendor claims and customer-specific case studies. Do not treat a marketing coverage or accuracy claim as proof of results for your users.

Run a proof of concept before committing

A live proof of concept can expose differences that a coverage table cannot. Use a representative sample of your own expected onboarding scenarios, with appropriate consent and privacy safeguards, and agree in advance on what constitutes a successful result.

  1. Set the test scope: Choose launch markets, document types, languages, risk tiers, and any database or alternative verification paths you expect to use.
  2. Test ordinary and difficult journeys: Include good captures, poor lighting, damaged or unsupported documents, mismatched details, unavailable data sources, failed checks, and retry paths.
  3. Review the user and operations experience: Test accessibility and localization, then inspect how exceptions reach manual reviewers and how decisions, retries, and case outcomes appear in your systems.
  4. Validate integration: Exercise the hosted flow or SDK/API in a sandbox, including the events and workflow handoffs your product needs.
  5. Compare commercial and privacy terms: Request forecast-volume pricing on the same billing assumptions, and review retention, deletion, access, security, and residency terms before production use.

Choose the provider that meets your market-specific requirements and works reliably in your tested journey at an acceptable total cost. The five names here are a starting shortlist, not an evidence-proven order of performance.
