Building an AIOps capability takes more than buying an AI-enabled operations platform. It means connecting useful operational data to the people who investigate incidents, then introducing automation with controls. Start with a defined service problem, establish the signals needed to understand it, and expand only when you can measure what is improving.
What is AIOps?
AIOps applies analytics and AI techniques to IT operations data to help teams detect, understand, and respond to operational issues. A practical AIOps capability joins telemetry, incident workflows, human judgment, and controlled automation. It is not a guarantee of autonomous operations, and adopting a tool alone does not establish that an organization has achieved AIOps.
Google Cloud describes its workflow as “observe, engage, and act”: collect and analyze operational signals, help teams investigate, and support remediation. That is one vendor’s framework, not a universal maturity standard. See Google Cloud’s AIOps overview.
How does AIOps work?
Operational systems produce signals such as metrics, logs, traces, and events. An AIOps workflow brings relevant signals together, adds context such as service ownership and dependencies, and analyzes patterns that may indicate an incident. Operators review the resulting alerts or hypotheses, investigate, and decide whether to take action. For repeatable cases, a tested runbook may automate some or all of the response, subject to the controls the organization sets.

The five keys below are a practical way to build that capability. They reinforce one another, but they are not a prescribed sequence every organization must follow.
1. Start with a business outcome and a bounded use case
Choose a recurring operational problem with a clear effect on a service or business process. Examples might include repeated alert noise around one service or a common incident that delays a business-critical workflow. Keep the initial scope narrow enough that the team can identify the relevant systems, owners, signals, and response steps.
Before choosing a platform, define how you will recognize progress. Record the current state for measures tied to the problem—for example, incident volume, time to acknowledge, or time to restore service—alongside any business-facing measure that matters. Select measures that fit the use case rather than assuming one metric captures the value of AIOps.

AWS Well-Architected guidance says that identifying KPIs helps align monitoring activities with business objectives. Treat that as operational guidance, not a promise that a particular AIOps implementation will improve a KPI: AWS Well-Architected operational excellence guidance.
2. Build a reliable, contextualized signal foundation
Analysis is only as useful as the information it can work with. Inventory the systems involved in the chosen use case and identify which metrics, logs, traces, and events are available, how they are collected, and whether they can be associated with the affected service. Google Cloud’s AIOps overview describes ingesting these signal types; its implementation examples also emphasize high-quality, normalized data.
Where available, attach context that helps an operator interpret a signal:

- Ownership: the team or person responsible for investigating it.
- Dependencies: upstream and downstream services that may be involved.
- Impact: which users or business processes could be affected.
Inconsistent naming, missing ownership, duplicate events, and disconnected tools can make signals harder to correlate. Google Cloud describes event and incident enrichment and normalization, while IBM describes connecting signals across platforms and using enrichment and deduplication. These are vendor descriptions of capabilities, not independent evidence of comparative performance: Google Cloud AIOps overview and IBM AIOps services.
3. Correlate signals to support investigation
The goal of analysis is to help operators separate related events from noise and develop a useful incident hypothesis. A flood of individually plausible alerts is not enough: operators need to see which signals may belong to the same incident and what evidence supports a possible cause.

Google Cloud describes anomaly detection, grouping related alerts, and likely-root-cause insights in its “Engage” stage. AWS says CloudWatch investigations analyze operational data and surface possible root-cause hypotheses. When assessing a suggested cause, operators should be able to inspect the related signals and understand why the system surfaced it. Treat an AI-generated hypothesis as a lead to investigate, not as proof of root cause.
4. Introduce automation with controls
Start with work that is repeatable, well understood, and reversible where possible. Examples in Google Cloud’s AIOps material include restarting a service, scaling resources, and rolling back a change. AWS describes CloudWatch surfacing Systems Manager Automation runbooks as remediation suggestions. These examples illustrate vendor-described options; they do not establish that every suggested action is safe for every environment.
Before allowing an automated action to run, test its runbook or playbook against representative conditions and define the safeguards around it. Match the approval and recovery controls to the action’s potential impact:

- For low-impact, routine tasks, a team may choose to automate execution after testing and monitoring the result.
- For actions that could affect customers, data, or multiple services, require human review or approval as appropriate.
- For every automated action, define how to verify the result, stop or contain a bad change, and roll back when a safe rollback is available.
IBM describes autonomy tiers, human-in-the-loop approvals, and governance as parts of AIOps services. The specific level of oversight is a design decision for each action, not a setting that should be applied uniformly across all remediation: IBM AIOps services.

Compare results for the initial use case with the baseline established before implementation. Review the service and business measures you selected, along with incident records and automation outcomes. Look for whether teams are receiving more actionable signals, whether the response is working as intended, and whether automated actions produce the expected result.
Use incidents and failed or halted automations to improve the signal context, correlation rules, and runbooks. Expand to another use case only when the team understands what worked, what did not, and what additional data or safeguards the next case requires. AWS operational guidance recommends observability and safe experimentation; its guidance does not establish a universal percentage reduction in outages, MTTR, or cost for AIOps programs. See AWS Prescriptive Guidance on AIOps and AWS Well-Architected KPI guidance.
How to compare AIOps platform options
Evaluate platforms against the operational use case and environment you have defined. Compare the work each option would require as well as the features it advertises.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Environment and tool coverage | Does it cover the systems and existing tools involved, including hybrid or multicloud environments if relevant? |
| Telemetry and context | Which signal types can it ingest? Can the data be normalized and linked to service identity, ownership, dependencies, and impact? |
| Analysis and investigation | How does it handle event enrichment, deduplication, correlation, anomaly detection, and investigation? Can operators inspect the evidence behind a suggested cause? |
| Incident workflows | How do alerts and hypotheses reach the teams responsible for review and response? |
| Remediation controls | Can the platform use the runbooks you need? What approval, audit, monitoring, and rollback controls are available? |
| Integration and flexibility | Are APIs available, and can the organization retain or continue using existing systems? |
| Cost and operating effort | What current vendor-specific terms apply, and what people, integration, and maintenance effort is needed relative to the measured outcome? |
Google Cloud, AWS, and IBM describe capabilities relevant to these comparison points, but their pages are vendor-authored. Use them to understand what each vendor says its services do, not as independent proof that one platform performs best. Pricing and terms should be checked with the vendors for the specific products and circumstances under consideration.
