Fall 2025 fashion coverage highlighted five jean silhouettes: wide-leg, barrel-leg, straight-leg, relaxed or baggy, and bootcut. They are editor-selected trends, not a verified ranking of the season’s best-selling jeans—and no cut is right for everyone. Use the shape, rise, wash, fit and footwear you actually want to wear to choose among them.
What “popular” means in fall 2025 denim coverage
Fashion editors featured several silhouettes at once rather than naming a single winning cut. Who What Wear covered relaxed, dark-wash, barrel and cuffed jeans; ELLE highlighted super-wide, straight and vintage-inspired shapes; and other fall guides included baggy and bootcut styles. Those roundups show what editors chose to spotlight, not what consumers bought most. No sales ranking or market statistic establishes these as the five best-selling styles.
The five silhouettes below give you a practical way to compare the coverage. Wash, cuffs, fading, prints and embroidery are design details that can appear on different cuts; they are not separate leg shapes.
1. Wide-leg jeans: a bold shape with room through the leg
How they look
Wide-leg jeans carry a broad line from the hip or thigh downward. ELLE said super-wide styles had taken center stage in its fall trend guide. A wide leg can make an outfit feel more dramatic, but whether it feels comfortable or flattering depends on the garment and the wearer.

Consider a simple top or knit if you want the jeans to be the main visual feature. Check the hem against the shoes you expect to wear: extra width and length can change how the jeans fall over trainers or boots. In Who What Wear’s autumn try-on, the editor described an H&M pair as relaxed but structured; that is her impression of that pair, not a guarantee about every wide-leg jean.
2. Barrel-leg jeans: a curved alternative
How they look
Barrel-leg jeans curve outward through the leg and taper back toward the ankle, creating a sculptural outline rather than a straight side seam. Who What Wear’s try-on editor described COS’s Bay as a subtle barrel shape that read partly like a wide-leg and baggy hybrid. That comparison is her fit impression of the specific pair.

Look at the shape from the hip through the hem, not just the product name: the degree of curve varies. Compare the rise and waist fit as well, since volume below the hip does not tell you whether the waistband will suit you. If you want the leg shape to stand out, keep the rest of the outfit relatively simple.
3. Straight-leg jeans: a classic line that still has a place
How they look
A straight cut keeps a more consistent width from the thigh toward the ankle than a barrel or bootcut. ELLE described straight and vintage-inspired styles as holding their ground alongside looser silhouettes. Straight-leg is a useful option if you want a familiar shape without the pronounced width of a wide leg.

Check rise and length rather than assuming every straight jean fits alike. In its try-on, Who What Wear’s editor described an Agolde straight pair as high-waisted, skimming the hips and full length. Those details belong to the reviewed pair, not to straight-leg jeans generally. Trainers or boots can both work; the hem and your preferred break over the shoe determine the result.
4. Relaxed and baggy jeans: casual volume at different levels
How they look
“Relaxed” can mean a little extra ease through a straight cut, while “baggy” usually signals a more oversized fit. Fall guides from Good Morning America and Who What Wear included looser jeans, but the labels alone do not specify how much room a particular pair has.

Check the garment’s measurements and fit description, especially around the seat, thigh and rise. Decide whether you want a relaxed shape that stays relatively close to the leg or a deliberately oversized silhouette. Simple tops can balance the volume; trainers and boots are both styling options, depending on the hem and the look you want.
5. Bootcut jeans: a subtle flare that changes proportions
How they look
Bootcut jeans widen toward the hem, usually less dramatically than a full flare. Vogue quoted Mother creative director and cofounder Tim Kaeding saying, “Bootcut in particular feels right again because it gives you a completely different proportion after so many seasons of straight and relaxed denim.” The comment describes a change in styling proportions, not a measured rise in sales.

Kaeding suggested pairing bootcuts with a small tee, knit or jacket. Harper’s Bazaar also covered lean bootcuts in its fall trend guide. Jane Pattinson, Gap’s global head of design, described Gap’s updated Long & Lean jean as “fitted in the waist and slim through the hip and thigh, with a clean bootcut leg,” adding that the specific product has a contour waistband, a slightly longer inseam and updated stretch denim. Those are product details for that Gap style, not universal bootcut features. Consider the inseam and footwear together so the hem falls as intended.

Compare the actual pair on the dimensions that will affect how you wear it:
- Leg shape: Decide how much volume or curve you want: a consistent straight line, a curved barrel, a wide leg, a relaxed or baggy fit, or a slight bootcut flare.
- Rise and waist: Check the rise and how the waistband fits you. A silhouette label does not tell you whether a jean will fit your waist or hips.
- Wash and surface: Fall coverage included dark washes, cuffs, heavy fading or distressing, tie-dye, prints and embroidery. Treat these as variations to consider alongside the cut.
- Structure and stretch: Read the fabric and product details, and consider how much structure or stretch you prefer. One editor’s comfort or fit impression applies to the pair she tried, not every version of that style.
- Length and shoes: Think about the shoes you plan to wear with the jeans. Full-length, cuffed or longer hems can change how a cut sits over trainers or boots.
- Outfits you will wear: Choose the silhouette that works with your tops and existing wardrobe. Styling suggestions are starting points, not rules.
For a reliable comparison, use the retailer’s size chart and product measurements, then check its return policy before ordering. Fit varies by product, fabric and person; a trend label cannot predict how a particular pair will fit you.
