USDA data offers three useful low-cost benchmarks: baby carrots, onions and sweet potatoes. Its 2023 estimates put them at $0.40, $0.42 and $0.58 per edible cup equivalent, respectively. Those figures are national estimates—not today’s guaranteed shelf prices—and the available highlights do not establish a current ranking of the five cheapest vegetables. To save on your own trip, compare local unit prices and account for how much you will use before it spoils.
What the USDA price estimates can—and can’t—tell you
The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) estimates average retail prices for more than 150 commonly consumed fresh and processed fruit and vegetable products. It reports prices by weight or pint as well as by edible cup equivalent, a measure that helps compare the cost of a usable amount rather than simply the package on the shelf. See the ERS fruit and vegetable price data and its highlights and interactive charts.
The three examples below are the low-cost options specifically identified in ERS’s highlights. They are helpful reference points, not a verified top-five list: the available figures do not establish the five cheapest vegetables today. The ERS figures were 2023 price estimates published in 2026.
| Vegetable | USDA ERS estimate | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Baby carrots | $0.40 per edible cup equivalent; 2023 price estimate, published in 2026 highlights | Use as a national reference when comparing with local carrot prices. |
| Onions | $0.42 per edible cup equivalent; 2023 price estimate, published in 2026 highlights | Compare the shelf price for the quantity you are likely to use. |
| Sweet potatoes | $0.58 per edible cup equivalent; 2023 price estimate, published in 2026 highlights | Compare the price per pound locally, then consider how much your household will use. |
An edible-cup estimate and a shelf label are not interchangeable. The USDA measure accounts for the edible amount; a local price per pound or package reflects what a specific store charges. Use the national figures for context, then compare the same unit across products at your store.

How to find the cheapest option at your store
- Compare the same unit. Check shelf labels for price per pound or another consistent package unit. Avoid comparing a large bag’s total price with a small bag’s price without adjusting for quantity.
- Use national data as a reference, not a checkout forecast. ERS’s edible-cup figures help put products on a comparable basis, but they are dated national averages rather than your local price today.
- Choose a quantity you can use. A lower unit price may not save money if part of the purchase goes uneaten. Consider your household’s usual meals and storage habits.
- Check again on each trip. Store, location, package size, season and date can all affect the shelf price. The lowest-cost choice can change from one shopping trip to the next.
Why a vegetable’s price can change
National prices provide context, but they move over time and do not guarantee what a particular shopper will pay. ERS reported that fresh vegetable retail prices in August 2026 were 2.6% higher than in August 2025 and 0.8% lower than in July 2026. Its forecast for 2026 was a 5.7% increase, with a forecast interval of 4.3% to 7.2%; that is a forecast, not a final annual result. The figures are in the ERS Food Price Outlook.
One other onion figure illustrates why dates and measures matter: ERS reported an average onion price of $0.26 per pound in January–October 2025, down 43% from $0.46 per pound in the comparable 2024 period. That is a market-report price per pound, not the same measure as the 2023 retail estimate of $0.42 per edible cup equivalent. The figures should not be treated as a direct comparison. What counts as saving money on vegetables?
The lowest shelf price is not always the lowest-cost choice for your household. A practical comparison combines the price per unit with the amount you expect to use and the likelihood that you will use it before it spoils. If an option costs less per pound but you discard some of it, another product or package may work out better for your budget. These are shopping considerations, not findings in the USDA price estimates.
National averages also cannot answer which vegetables are consistently cheapest in every neighborhood. Reader discussions such as “What veggies are consistently cheap where you live?” reflect local experience, not a national price ranking. For a reliable decision, check your store’s current unit prices.
