CoinLore’s year-end ranking named WHITEWHALE its top ROI coin, but its displayed return is a historical outlier—not evidence that the token, or any other past winner, is a good buy now. The figures below describe 2025, which ended on December 31; they are not current investment recommendations.
What “best-performing crypto” means
A performance ranking is meaningful only alongside its rules. The eligible asset universe, price source, measurement dates, liquidity filters and return calculation can all change which coin comes out on top. A list of every eligible token answers a different question from a list limited to large-cap cryptocurrencies.
CoinLore’s retrospective covers January 1 through December 31, 2025, calculating ROI from each asset’s first recorded close to its last recorded close. Its positive-return leaderboard applies minimum market-cap and trading-volume thresholds. The page separately calculates an equal-weight average for the 100 coins with the largest average market capitalization during 2025. CoinLore says its methodology excludes stablecoins and yield-bearing dollar tokens, while gold-backed tokens may be included. Its ranking page was last updated October 7, 2026, and says rankings are recalculated daily; its results are specific to that source and methodology, not a universal ranking of every crypto asset. See CoinLore’s ranking and methodology.
For another kind of comparison, S&P Dow Jones Indices defines the S&P Cryptocurrency Top 30 Select Index as the top 30 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization in its broad digital-asset index, excluding meme coins and abandoned coins. That is a benchmark universe, not a recommendation list. Read S&P’s index definition.

What the 2025 numbers show
The standout return is only one part of the picture. CoinLore’s top-ranked coin and broader market statistics describe different populations, while Binance Research’s market-level estimate uses its own methodology. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures.
| Measure | Reported result | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Top ROI coin | WHITEWHALE: +106,692.04% (CoinLore Data Team, 2025) | CoinLore’s first recorded 2025 close to last recorded 2025 close; a source-specific historical outlier, not a forecast. CoinLore |
| CoinLore tracked performers | 86 positive and 691 non-positive out of 777 tracked coins (CoinLore Data Team, 2025) | CoinLore’s covered population and eligibility rules—not every crypto asset in existence. CoinLore |
| Top-100 equal-weight average ROI | -14.10% (CoinLore Data Team, 2025) | The 100 coins with the largest average market capitalization during 2025; this is not the average of the positive-return leaderboard. CoinLore |
| Total crypto market performance | About -7.9% (Binance Research, report published January 15, 2026) | Binance Research’s estimate for the total crypto market in 2025; it also reports market capitalization exceeded US$4 trillion during the year. This is a separate market-level measure, not CoinLore’s top-100 equal-weight figure. Binance Research |
The 86 positive performers sit alongside 691 that were flat or negative in CoinLore’s tracked population. That contrast is a reason not to treat a spectacular winner as representative of what most coins did. The figures come from commercial market-data and research publishers, not one official, consolidated regulator series.

Why a past winner is not a current buy recommendation
A 2025 ranking answers a historical question: which eligible assets had the largest measured returns during that period? It does not establish what an asset is worth today, whether it can be bought or sold easily, or what it may return in the future. No cited source supports a claim that any cryptocurrency is “destined” for stellar returns.
- The measurement is backward-looking. A large return between two recorded closes says nothing by itself about the price path in between or what happens after the end date.
- Eligibility rules shape the leaderboard. Small, newly issued or thinly traded tokens can produce very different rankings from large-cap benchmarks; screens and listing coverage matter.
- ROI is not necessarily an investor’s net return. CoinLore’s stated calculation compares recorded closes. It does not, in the cited methodology, establish a return after fees, taxes, staking income or the actual prices available to a particular buyer.
- Market size and access are not guarantees. Market capitalization, adoption, ETF access or a price target cannot ensure future returns.
Risks to weigh before investing in crypto
The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy’s investor alert describes crypto-related volatility and illiquidity, as well as risks involving custody platforms, suspended withdrawals, fraud, theft and technical problems. It notes that crypto accounts may lack protections available to certain regulated securities accounts or insured bank deposits. The alert says: “There are no such protections for accounts that you place with crypto asset entities.” The page also clarifies that the alert reflects staff views and has no legal force or effect.
