No government estimate cited here verifies a single new U.S. discovery of 40 million tons of commercially recoverable lithium. The latest cited U.S. Geological Survey national summary reports 30 million tons of measured and indicated U.S. lithium resources. Other estimates describe lithium in particular brines or use separate categories. They are not interchangeable, and none by itself establishes how much lithium will reach battery makers.
Where does the 40-million-ton claim come from?
The cited U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) figures do not substantiate “40 million tons” as one newly found deposit or as a total of proven U.S. reserves. They measure different places and types of deposits, use different classification systems, and were published in different years.
The most useful national figure in the cited sources is USGS’s 2026 estimate of 30 million tons of measured and indicated U.S. lithium resources. “Measured and indicated” describes the level of geological knowledge about a resource; it does not mean that all of it is economically recoverable, currently being mined, or ready for battery production.
Other figures may sound as though they can be added to that national total, but their scopes and categories differ. Combining them would create a total the agencies did not report.

What the major U.S. estimates measure
| Estimate | Place and type | What the classification means |
|---|---|---|
| 30 million tons USGS, 2026 |
U.S. resources across continental brines, claystone, geothermal brines, hectorite, oilfield brines, and pegmatites. | Measured and indicated resources. This is not a reserve or production figure, and the national total is not stated as entirely economic to extract. |
| 5.1–19.0 million metric tons USGS, 2024 |
Lithium present in brines of the Smackover Formation in southern Arkansas. | An estimated amount in place. The range reflects uncertainty in predicted concentrations and assumptions about porosity. The assessment does not determine technical or economic extraction feasibility. |
| 760 thousand tonnes DOE, 2023 |
Salton Sea geothermal brines. | DOE’s fact sheet calls this amount “proven”—what it describes as known to be accessible today. That is DOE’s category, not a claim that the amount is currently being produced. |
| 2,600 thousand tonnes DOE, 2023 |
Salton Sea geothermal brines. | DOE’s “accessible” category. Keep it distinct from the fact sheet’s “proven” and “probable” amounts. |
| 3,400 thousand tonnes DOE, 2023 |
Salton Sea geothermal brines. | DOE’s “probable” category, which depends on future technology advances; it should not be described as proven reserves. |
| 2.3 million metric tons USGS, 2026 |
Northern Appalachian region. | Estimated undiscovered, economically recoverable lithium. This is a distinct regional assessment, not a figure to silently add to the Arkansas or Salton Sea estimates. |
| 0, rounded USGS, 2026 summary table |
U.S. mine production in 2025. | A rounded mine-production figure, not a measure of all possible recovery from brines or secondary sources. |
The Arkansas and Salton Sea numbers are not apples-to-apples reserve totals. For any comparison, the key questions are where the estimate applies, what kind of deposit it covers, how it was estimated, what category the agency assigns it, and whether technical and economic recoverability were assessed.
What does “lithium found” mean in Arkansas and at the Salton Sea?
Southern Arkansas: lithium dissolved in brine
USGS’s 2024 estimate concerns lithium dissolved in brines occupying pore space in the Smackover Formation—not a solid mass of lithium sitting ready to mine. The 5.1–19.0 million metric ton range is an estimate of lithium present, with uncertainty tied to predicted concentrations and porosity assumptions. USGS explicitly did not assess whether it is technologically or economically feasible to extract.

Salton Sea: lithium in geothermal fluids
DOE’s 2023 figures concern geothermal brines associated with the Salton Sea. DOE described direct lithium extraction (DLE) as a way to recover lithium from geothermal brines alongside geothermal electricity generation. Its fact sheet estimated that the existing 400 MW of geothermal capacity was associated with brine containing 21,500 tons of lithium per year. That figure is lithium contained in brine, not annual lithium product output; DOE said the lithium was not then being recovered.
DOE’s November 2023 fact sheet also stated that DLE requires 99% less water per ton of lithium than current lithium mining processes. That is DOE’s comparison as stated, not evidence that every DLE project has identical water use or environmental performance.

Could these resources change the green transition?
They indicate potential, not a guaranteed outcome. If projects can extract and process lithium at scale, domestic resources could contribute to a more diverse supply. In geothermal settings, mineral recovery could potentially be paired with electricity generation. But a geological estimate does not establish commercial output, a development schedule, lower battery prices, or a guaranteed reduction in U.S. imports.
That distinction matters for readers following the energy transition through household costs or investments. Resource estimates alone do not show whether, or when, new supply will affect battery, vehicle, or electricity prices. Nor do they establish the financial prospects of a particular company or project.

USGS Director David Applegate described the broader possibility this way: “Lithium is a critical mineral for the energy transition, and the potential for increased U.S. production to replace imports has implications for employment, manufacturing and supply-chain resilience.” The word “potential” is important: the statement concerns possible future effects, not outcomes already achieved.
Quick Recap
What the headline should—and should not—lead you to believe
- Supported: USGS reports 30 million tons of measured and indicated U.S. lithium resources in its 2026 national summary.
- Supported, with a narrower scope: USGS estimates 5.1–19.0 million metric tons of lithium in southern Arkansas Smackover brines, without assessing extraction feasibility.
- Not established by these estimates: that 40 million tons were discovered in one new deposit, that 40 million tons are commercially recoverable reserves, or that the lithium is ready to supply battery manufacturers.
- Not a price forecast: neither the resource figures nor the DOE water-use comparison establish a timeline for lower consumer costs.
