You can reduce what you pay to buy an NFT by choosing a supported lower-fee network, waiting for congestion to ease when the purchase is not urgent, and checking your wallet’s fee estimate before confirming. There is no fixed gas price for an NFT: the total depends on the computation the transaction requires and the fee rate at the time it is included.
1. Choose a lower-fee network the NFT supports
Ethereum Layer 2 networks are built on top of Ethereum and can offer lower fees while handling more transactions. Ethereum.org describes them as a good option for activity that does not need to happen on Ethereum mainnet: Ethereum gas and fees.
Before switching networks, confirm that the marketplace, the specific NFT collection, and your wallet all support the same network. A lower displayed fee is not useful if the NFT cannot be purchased there or your assets are on a different network. Support varies; no particular marketplace or collection is established here as compatible.
Compare the actual purchase before switching
- Check the network shown for the NFT and the marketplace listing.
- Compare the wallet’s fee estimate for the purchase on each supported network.
- Consider whether the confirmation time and network fit your needs, not just the fee shown.
2. Wait for lower congestion if the purchase can wait
Ethereum fees rise and fall with network demand. Popular dapps, NFT activity, and other surges can make transactions more expensive. If the purchase is not time-sensitive, checking again later may reveal a lower estimate.

There is no universally cheapest hour, and waiting does not guarantee savings. Compare the wallet estimate when you are ready to act rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
3. Review what your wallet’s fee estimate means
Gas measures the computation needed to process a transaction. The amount paid depends on the gas used and the fee rate: on Ethereum, the fee calculation uses the base fee plus any priority fee. A smart-contract interaction such as an NFT purchase can require more gas than a simple transfer, so the fee is not determined by the NFT’s sale price alone.

Ethereum.org gives 84,904 gas units as an example for an NFT transfer in its fee explainer, updated April 8, 2025. That is a gas-unit example, not a fixed purchase fee or a current cost: converting it into an amount of money would require the fee rate at the time of the transaction.
Wallets commonly provide a recommended fee estimate, which can spare you from manually configuring transaction fees. Review the estimate and the transaction details before confirming, especially if the amount differs from what you expected.

4. Don’t force the lowest fee when timing matters
Ethereum’s base fee is required by the protocol; the priority fee is an additional tip that can make a transaction more attractive for inclusion. Setting an unusually low fee is not a guaranteed discount: the transaction may be included later or not included at all. If you need to complete the purchase promptly, use the wallet’s current recommendation rather than assuming the minimum setting will work.
Ethereum transactions can include a maximum-fee limit. Check the wallet’s displayed estimate and transaction fields before approving, and avoid changing advanced fee settings unless you understand how they affect inclusion. See Ethereum.org’s gas guide and its transaction documentation.

Why can an NFT gas fee be high?
The fee can be high because the network is busy, because the purchase’s smart-contract interaction requires substantial computation, or both. The NFT’s listed price does not set the network fee. Check the wallet estimate and, if you can wait, compare it again when demand has eased.
