4 Foods to Consider Stocking Up On Amid Tariff Uncertainty

The original list named meat and seafood, nuts, canned legumes, and fruits and vegetables—but current official sources do not show an imminent tariff deadline or price impact for these groceries.

The original advice to stock up “before tariffs take effect” was published on February 27, 2025, and its deadline framing is now outdated. Current official trade statements do not establish that meat and seafood, nuts, canned legumes, or fruits and vegetables are facing an imminent tariff deadline or predictable price increases. If you want to prepare, buy only familiar foods you can store and use—not a speculative stockpile.

What the original advice covers—and what has changed

EatingWell’s February 27, 2025 article grouped possible pantry and freezer purchases into four categories: meat and seafood, nuts, canned legumes, and fruits and vegetables. It advised readers to focus on foods they already eat and quantities they can manage, rather than buying unfamiliar items that might go unused. EatingWell’s article is the source for those suggestions; they are not a guarantee of savings.

The tariff timing needs a current qualification. On July 1, 2026, the U.S. Trade Representative said the USMCA remained in force pending resolution or termination after the United States did not agree to renew it in its current form. A September 8, 2026 USTR statement discussed targeted measures involving certain Canadian products, but did not establish that the four grocery categories above are covered. The statements do not identify an imminent tariff deadline for these foods. USTR’s USMCA review statement and USTR’s statement on Canada provide broader trade context, not a grocery shopping calendar.

Do tariffs mean these groceries will cost more?

Not necessarily, and the available official sources do not establish a food-by-food tariff list or quantify any resulting retail-price changes for these categories. USDA Economic Research Service reports that Canada accounted for 18.5% of U.S. agricultural imports in 2025. That is an aggregate trade statistic—not evidence that a particular grocery item is tariffed or that a tariff would pass through to a shopper’s price. USDA ERS’s Canada trade page provides that context.

USDA ERS also reports 2025 agricultural trade figures for Mexico and identifies the United States as Mexico’s largest agricultural trading partner. Those bilateral totals do not identify a tariff’s effect on a specific U.S. grocery item or its shelf price. USDA ERS’s Mexico trade page is useful for trade context, not a prediction of food inflation.

Four food groups to consider buying in ordinary quantities

These are broad categories, not four specific products. Use the storage and waste questions below to decide whether buying a little extra fits your household; none is a recommendation to buy a particular amount.

1. Meat and seafood

If these are regular meals in your home, the 2025 article suggests freezing portions you can use. Buy only what your freezer can accommodate and what you expect to eat; the tariff sources do not establish that any particular meat or seafood product is about to rise in price.

2. Nuts

Nuts can be kept sealed or frozen, according to the article’s suggestions. Consider them only if they are already part of your meals or snacks, and choose an amount that suits your storage space and normal use.

3. Canned legumes

Canned beans and other legumes are a familiar pantry option for households that use them. The article suggests storing cans in a cool, dry place. There is no source-backed reason here to buy a brand or quantity because of a predicted tariff.

4. Fruits and vegetables

The article suggests freezing produce where appropriate. Buy produce you know how to prepare and store; a larger purchase is not useful if it spoils before you can eat it. The cited official trade statements do not say which fresh or frozen items, if any, are covered by current measures.

A practical way to decide whether to stock up

  1. Start with your normal shopping list. Choose foods your household already eats rather than adding products solely because of tariff headlines.
  2. Check storage before buying more. Make sure pantry or freezer space is available and that you can store the food as intended.
  3. Choose a manageable amount. Base the purchase on likely use, not on an assumed price deadline. The source article offers no basis for a specific quantity or a promise of savings.
  4. Check current, product-specific information before making a tariff-based decision. The USTR statements and USDA trade pages cited here do not establish coverage, effective dates, exemptions, or retail-price effects for these groceries.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
