Employee Appreciation Day 2026 has passed. The next observance, following the first-Friday-in-March convention, falls on March 5, 2027. Use these 35 ideas as a menu—not a checklist: ask what employees value, make appreciation specific, and choose options that include remote, hybrid, shift, and deskless teams. Recognition works best as a year-round habit, not a once-a-year event.
How to choose an idea employees will value
There is no single gift or event that suits every team. Gallup says recognition is not one-size-fits-all and emphasizes honest, individualized recognition. Before planning, consider what employees prefer, who can participate, the cost and workload, and whether the practice can continue beyond one day.
- Preference: Would people rather receive private thanks or public recognition? Is a tangible gift welcome, or would time and flexibility mean more?
- Access: Can remote, hybrid, shift, and deskless employees participate on equal terms?
- Cost and workload: Can the idea be delivered fairly within budget and without adding avoidable work?
- Durability: Is this a one-time celebration, or can it become a repeatable practice?
A specific thank-you is stronger than a generic one: name what the person did, explain its effect, and say why it mattered. Ask before making someone the focus of public praise, and make participation optional where possible.
Easy, low-cost recognition
1. Write a specific thank-you note
Name the action, its effect, and why it mattered. A handwritten card is optional; the personal, concrete message is the point. Gallup lists a personal note or thank-you card as a low-cost form of recognition. If you need supplies, employee appreciation thank-you cards can help, but buying cards does not create appreciation by itself.

Why make recognition a regular practice?
Gallup’s recognition article, published in 2016 and updated January 12, 2024, reports that one in three U.S. workers strongly agreed they had received recognition or praise for good work in the past seven days. The excerpt does not specify the underlying research period, so this should not be read as a 2026 poll. The same Gallup article reports that 28% named a manager as the source of their most meaningful and memorable recognition, while 24% named a high-level leader or CEO.
Those figures are a reminder to make recognition visible and personal at more than one level of an organization—not proof that a particular activity will produce a specific business result. Bob Nelson, president of Nelson Motivation Inc. and creator of Employee Appreciation Day, told SHRM that the goal is “to make recognition a part of ongoing practices at work, not to just generically thank everyone one day out of the year.”
When is Employee Appreciation Day?
SHRM’s 2024 vendor-directory article identified March 6 as Employee Appreciation Day in 2026. SHRM’s older article describes the observance as falling on the first Friday in March; following that convention, the next date is March 5, 2027. Confirm the date before publishing a calendar or planning event logistics.
