30+ Summer Essentials for 2024: Beach Accessories, Camping Gear, and More

For summer 2024, build your packing list around the trip: beach days call for sun protection, shade, water, and attention to local beach conditions; frontcountry camping makes room for bulkier shelter and cooking gear; backcountry travel demands a lighter, more self-sufficient kit. This checklist covers more than 30 useful categories, but no one needs every item. Match your choices to the weather, trip length, group size, carrying capacity, and destination rules.

Start with the trip, not the shopping list

Beach outings, campground stays, and backcountry trips have different needs. The National Park Service (NPS) says camping equipment depends on the setting, season, difficulty, and duration. Check the destination’s rules and current safety guidance before you pack; food storage, fires, water access, and beach conditions can all be location-specific.

  • Beach day: Prioritize shade, sun protection, drinking water, and a way to carry essentials. Add swimming gear only if you plan to enter the water.
  • Frontcountry camping: If you can drive close to camp and carry weight is manageable, you can consider a larger tent, bedding, cooking equipment, and a cooler.
  • Backcountry camping: Carrying weight and volume matter more. Plan for navigation, water treatment, weather, food storage, and emergency communication, following local requirements.

A tent’s listed capacity is not a guarantee of comfortable space for people and gear. NPS notes that a two-person tent may not fit two people plus their equipment or pets.

Beach-day essentials

Sun protection and shade

  • Beach shade: A sun shelter or umbrella can provide shade when natural shade is unavailable. Set it up securely and follow beach rules.
  • Hat, sunglasses, and light clothing: NPS recommends these along with seeking shade at the beach.
  • UV-blocking shirt: NPS recommends a UV-blocking shirt for swimming.
  • Sunscreen: NPS’s reef-protection guidance recommends sunscreen whose only active ingredients are zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. That is a specific NPS recommendation, not a universal certification that a product is harmless to reefs. NPS reported that 4,000 to 6,000 tons of sunscreen wash off into oceans worldwide each year; its page was updated October 5, 2022.

Comfort and practical carry

  • Beach towel for drying off or sitting on.
  • Swimsuit and a dry change of clothes if swimming is part of the plan.
  • Water bottle and enough drinking water for the outing.
  • Cooler or insulated bag for food and drinks, where permitted.
  • Waterproof bag or pouch to keep a phone, keys, and other small items away from sand and splashes.
  • Beach bag to carry the day’s supplies.
  • Sandals or water shoes appropriate to the beach surface and activity.
  • Portable seating if you prefer not to sit on the sand.
  • Reusable food containers and waste bags to pack out litter.

Camping gear checklist

The NPS Ten Essentials guidance describes these items as a collection that can help you or others during minor injuries, sudden weather changes, or unexpected emergencies. The specific equipment you need varies by trip; treat the list below as a planning framework, not a universal shopping requirement.

Navigation, communication, and light

  • Map and compass or another suitable navigation method: Know how to use your chosen tools before leaving.
  • Headlamp or flashlight: Pack a light source for camp and emergencies, plus the batteries or charging method it requires.
  • Communication device: Bring a way to contact help that suits the coverage and remoteness of the destination.

Shelter, insulation, and weather protection

  • Tent: Choose for expected weather, group size, and the space needed for people and equipment.
  • Sleeping bag or other bedding: Match insulation to the expected conditions.
  • Sleeping pad: Adds a layer between you and the ground; choose one appropriate to your trip and carrying limits.
  • Rain gear and extra warm layers: Pack for the forecast and possible changes, rather than assuming summer weather will stay warm and dry.
  • Sun protection: A hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing matter on exposed routes as well as at the beach.

Water, food, and cooking

  • Drinking water: Carry enough for the route and conditions.
  • Water filter or other treatment method: Use an option suitable for the water source and destination guidance.
  • Extra food: Include food beyond the planned meals for unexpected delays.
  • Camp stove and compatible fuel: Useful where cooking is allowed; check fire restrictions and fuel rules before travel.
  • Cookware and utensils: Bring only what the group’s planned meals require.
  • Cooler: NPS says a cooler may suit frontcountry camping when carrying weight is not an issue. Backcountry food storage may require a different method, and local wildlife rules determine what is appropriate.

First aid, repair, and personal protection

  • First-aid supplies: Carry a kit appropriate to the group, route, and likely needs.
  • Insect protection: Include protection suited to the destination and season.
  • Fire-starting supplies: Carry them only where permitted and know how to use them safely.
  • Repair tools and supplies: A small repair kit can help address problems with equipment; tailor it to what you are carrying.
  • Personal medication and toiletries: Pack what members of the group need for the trip.
  • Waste bags: Plan to carry out rubbish and follow local sanitation rules.

Adjust the checklist for a safer, lighter trip

  1. Check the destination: Review official guidance for weather, beach conditions, fire restrictions, water sources, and wildlife or food-storage rules.
  2. Set the trip profile: Note the duration, difficulty, expected weather, group size, and whether you will carry gear far from a vehicle.
  3. Choose essentials before extras: Cover shelter, water, food, navigation, light, first aid, and weather protection before packing convenience items.
  4. Check each item’s fit: Confirm that shelter, bedding, clothing, and cooking supplies suit the conditions and the people using them.
  5. Recheck shortly before leaving: Conditions and local restrictions can change; follow current official advice.

Check hazards as well as gear

Equipment cannot make unsafe conditions safe. NOAA identifies heat and rip currents as major summer hazards. In a June 3, 2024 article, NOAA reported 1,200 annual heat deaths, attributing that figure to CDC data, and nearly 75 annual rip-current deaths, attributing that figure to NOAA data. These are broad annual figures, not estimates of the risk at a particular beach or on a particular trip.

Before a beach visit, check local conditions and official beach-safety guidance. For outdoor trips, monitor weather and follow destination guidance. If conditions become unsafe, change the plan rather than relying on extra equipment.
