In the United States, you can move money from PayPal to a linked bank account with a standard transfer or, when eligible, an instant transfer. You can also send it to an eligible linked debit card, which routes the funds to the bank account associated with that card. Standard bank transfer is generally free and typically takes 1–3 business days; instant is usually faster but costs a fee.
Compare the three ways to get PayPal money into your bank account
| Method | Typical timing | PayPal fee | Destination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard transfer | Typically 1–3 business days | Free when there is no currency conversion | Eligible linked bank account |
| Instant transfer | Typically within minutes; bank processing may take longer | For US personal accounts, 1.75% of the amount, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum | Eligible linked bank account |
| Transfer to a debit card | Standard card transfer typically takes about 48 hours; instant timing varies | Standard card transfer is free; instant transfer incurs a fee | Eligible linked debit card; funds go to the bank account associated with the card |
PayPal says, “You can transfer funds from your PayPal account to a linked bank account or an eligible debit card.” PayPal’s withdrawal instructions describe the available destinations. Options vary by account and destination, so use the transfer screen to confirm what is available and the fee for your transaction.
1. Use a standard transfer to a linked bank account
Choose standard if you can wait and want to avoid a PayPal transfer fee. PayPal describes this bank transfer as typically taking 1–3 business days and free when no currency conversion is involved.
- On the web: Open Wallet, select Transfer Money, then choose Transfer to your bank.
- In the app: Start from your PayPal balance, tap Transfer, then choose Transfer to bank.
- Select the linked bank account and the standard timing option if it appears. Review the destination, amount and any fee disclosure before submitting.
2. Choose instant transfer when speed matters
If PayPal offers instant transfer for your linked bank account, select it in the same transfer flow. PayPal says it typically completes within minutes, but the receiving bank’s processing can affect when the funds are usable.

For US personal accounts, PayPal’s fee schedule lists an instant-transfer fee of 1.75% of the amount, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. The fee shown in your account during the transaction is the practical amount to check before confirming.
3. Transfer to an eligible linked debit card
A debit-card transfer is another possible route to money in a bank account, but the card—not the bank account itself—is the selected destination. PayPal says funds sent to an eligible linked debit card go to the bank account associated with that card. Its card-transfer guidance describes standard card transfers as free and typically taking about 48 hours; instant card transfers incur a fee. Choose this option only if the card is shown as eligible and the timing and fee meet your needs.

How to choose and avoid transfer delays
- For a no-fee transfer: Use standard bank transfer when there is no currency conversion and you can wait.
- For speed: Consider instant only if PayPal offers it for your destination and the displayed fee is acceptable.
- For a card route: Check that the debit card is eligible and verify the associated bank account is the one you intend to receive the funds.
- Before submitting: Confirm destination details, amount and fee. PayPal says incorrect or incomplete destination information can cause a withdrawal to fail and the funds to return.
PayPal notes that weekends and holidays may add at least one business day to processing. It may also review any transfer, which can affect arrival. A stated timing is therefore an estimate, not a guarantee of when funds will be available.
What to check if a transfer is late or fails
First check the transfer status in your PayPal account and verify that the selected bank account or card details are accurate. Allow for weekends, holidays, bank processing and any PayPal review. If the withdrawal fails, PayPal says funds can be returned when destination information is incorrect or incomplete; follow the status and instructions shown in your account. For a late transfer, consult PayPal’s “Where’s my withdrawal?” help page.
