A high Amazon star average is a reason to look closer, not proof that a product’s reviews are genuine. Check when reviews appeared, look at reviewers’ other activity, and compare the listing with independent sources. Each can reveal a warning sign; none can confirm fraud from appearance alone.
1. Check when the reviews appeared
Look at review dates and watch for a cluster of reviews arriving over a short period. The FTC advises consumers to check how recent reviews are and says a burst may sometimes indicate fake reviews.

There is no established number of reviews or time window that proves a burst is suspicious. Rapid growth can also have legitimate explanations: Amazon says advertising or an appealing price can lead to a sudden increase in reviews. Treat timing as a prompt to investigate, not a verdict.
2. Look at the reviewer’s history
When a reviewer’s profile is available, see whether they have reviewed other products. An account that appears to exist only to review one item may warrant caution, but that pattern does not establish that the review is fake. The FTC recommends reading other reviews by the same reviewer when possible.

Consider whether the reviewer’s other feedback offers useful context: do they discuss different products in a way that sounds specific, or is there little history to assess? A limited profile is a clue to weigh alongside other evidence, not a reason to label a person or review fraudulent.
3. Compare the claims with other sources
Check whether independent sources—including impartial expert reviews—describe the same strengths and drawbacks as the Amazon listing. Compare specific claims, not just star averages: for example, whether multiple sources mention the same performance limitation or build-quality issue. The FTC recommends looking at a variety of sources.
Read both favorable and critical reviews. Fake reviews can be negative as well as positive, and some fake positive reviews use a rating below five stars to appear more believable, according to the FTC. A mix of ratings is not proof of authenticity; look for specific, consistent details and consider whether the criticism or praise matches what other sources report.
What these checks cannot prove
Visual clues cannot reliably establish whether an individual review is genuine. The FTC warns that it can be nearly impossible to tell for sure from appearance alone. As Amazon’s senior data science manager Josh Meek puts it, “The difference between an authentic and fake review is not always clear for someone outside of Amazon to spot.”

Amazon says its detection systems use information shoppers cannot see, including seller advertising, reports of abuse, behavioral patterns, review history, language analysis, and relationships among accounts. Its company-reported enforcement figures are not a measure of the likelihood that reviews on a particular listing are fake: Amazon says it blocked over 200 million suspected fake reviews in 2022 and 267 million in 2023. These are global counts of suspected reviews the company says it blocked, not independent estimates of total fake reviews.
In the United States, the FTC’s Consumer Review Rule took effect on October 21, 2024. It addresses specified deceptive conduct, including buying or selling fake reviews and incentives conditioned on positive or negative sentiment. The rule does not give shoppers a visual test for authenticating an individual review.

How to report a review you suspect is fake
- On Amazon, use the “Report abuse” link next to the review, as described in Amazon’s review guidance.
- You can also report concerns to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC advises including “fake review” in the comments field.
Report a concern rather than presenting a suspicion as a finding: the platform or regulator can assess evidence that shoppers cannot access.
