You can change Social Security direct deposit online through my Social Security, through a bank that offers Automated Enrollment (ENR), or by contacting the Social Security Administration (SSA) by phone or at a local office. The right route depends on your benefit type and whether your bank supports ENR. If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the online change option is currently unavailable.
Compare the three ways to change your bank account

SSA’s instructions and eligibility details are on its Update direct deposit page and in its direct-deposit FAQ.
1. Change Social Security direct deposit online
- Sign in to your personal my Social Security account.
- Open My Profile and select the direct-deposit update option.
- Enter the new account information and submit the change. Follow the on-screen instructions and check your account for confirmation.
SSA identifies this as its fastest way to update direct deposit. Its FAQ specifies that recipients of retirement, survivors, and disability benefits can update U.S. direct deposit through My Profile. That online eligibility does not extend to SSI direct-deposit changes.
2. Ask your new bank to submit the change
Contact the financial institution where you opened the new account and ask whether it supports SSA Automated Enrollment (ENR). If it does, the bank can send your updated direct-deposit information directly to Social Security, without requiring you to call or visit SSA. Participation is not universal, so confirm with the bank before relying on this route. See SSA’s bank enrollment instructions.

3. Contact SSA by phone or at a local office
To make the change by phone
- Sign in to or create a personal my Social Security account.
- Generate a one-time code at ssa.gov/PIN.
- Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 and give the code to the representative when asked.
SSA’s task page lists representative availability as Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in most U.S. time zones. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. Contact details and procedures can change, so confirm them on SSA’s current direct-deposit page before calling.
If you cannot generate the code
If you cannot create an account or generate the one-time code, SSA directs you to visit a local office or arrange the change through your bank. The code is an identity check for a phone transaction, not a requirement to keep receiving benefits in the account already on file. SSA says benefits continue on schedule to the account in its records. Its identity-proofing guidance also warns that it will not text you asking you to provide or confirm identity information.

SSI recipients need a different route
SSA says SSI recipients cannot currently change direct deposit online through the general My Profile service. You can check your payment method in My Profile, but to change the account, call SSA or contact a local office. Report bank-account changes promptly under SSA’s SSI reporting guidance.
Keep the old account open during the transition
SSA’s March 18, 2025 announcement said it would expedite processing direct-deposit change requests made online and in person to one business day. That is an agency-processing statement, not a promise that the next benefit payment will arrive in the new account within one business day. SSA’s 2026 retirement and survivors publication says changing accounts takes about 30 to 60 days and advises beneficiaries not to close the old account until they confirm a benefit payment has arrived in the new one. These statements address different parts of the process: processing a request and completing the payment transition. - Leave the old account open until a payment is confirmed in the new account.
- Use SSA’s official website, phone number, or local office for the change.
- Do not give a one-time code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Why the phone identity check matters
SSA introduced the one-time-code process for phone direct-deposit changes beginning April 28, 2025. In a March 12, 2025 release, SSA said approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct-deposit fraud was associated with someone calling SSA to change bank-account information. That figure is SSA’s reported statistic for 2025, not an independently verified current fraud rate. The release also stated, “All other SSA telephone services remain unchanged.” Read the SSA release for its explanation of the change.
