Harvest progress is distinct from crop maturity and condition. USDA reported that 87% of Illinois soybeans were dropping leaves by October 4, compared with 79% the prior week and a 2021–2025 average of 90%. Leaf drop is a maturity-stage measure, not the share harvested. [USDA NASS Illinois Crop Progress and Condition]
What local field reports add
A September 25 University of Illinois Extension update described wet, saturated soils in northern Illinois, where rain and cooler weather delayed fieldwork, while early-maturity soybean harvest had begun in parts of the state. That dated, local account provides context, but it is not a substitute for the newer statewide October 5 estimate. [University of Illinois Extension crop update, September 25, 2026]
