The figures and forecasts below are a dated snapshot, not current market or weather information.
1. Wheat futures rose as growing areas faced weather concerns
Wheat futures moved higher overnight as unfavorable weather in several growing regions raised concern about crop conditions. In the U.S. southern Plains, very dry weather was expected, and little precipitation had fallen during the preceding month. Recently emerged winter wheat was short of moisture. Red flag warnings were in effect for parts of Kansas and the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles, areas where hard red winter wheat is grown.
The Department of Agriculture reported that 47% of the U.S. winter crop was rated good or excellent at the start of the week, down from 48% a week earlier and 55% in the same week of 2024. Eight percent of the crop was headed, compared with 5% the previous week; that was equal to the preceding five-year average. These figures were reported on April 17, 2025.
International weather context
Agricultural meteorologist Don Keeney of Maxar said limited weekend rainfall in the Black Sea region was expected to let wheat moisture levels decline. Precipitation in parts of north-central Europe could help crops, although more rain was needed after recent dry weather.

The USDA figures reported April 17 covered the seven days ending April 12, 2025. They describe two different stages of poultry production: eggs set in incubators and chicks placed into meat production.
Eggs set in incubators
A total of 250.2 million eggs were placed in incubators during the week, compared with 249.8 million the previous week. The reported average hatchability was about 79%. For broiler-type eggs, Alabama led the reported state totals, followed by Georgia and Arkansas.
| State | Broiler-type eggs set |
|---|---|
| Alabama | 35.3 million |
| Georgia | 34.4 million |
| Arkansas | 26.2 million |
Chicks placed into meat production
About 192 million broiler-type chicks were placed into meat production during the same seven-day period, up from 191.4 million the previous week. Since the start of 2025, placements totaled 2.87 billion, 1% more than in the same timeframe a year earlier. The year-to-date comparison is distinct from the weekly total.

3. Fire-weather warnings covered parts of the Southern Plains
The April 17 report described red flag warnings across a broad area extending from eastern Arizona northeast and east into Texas, Oklahoma, and half of Kansas. National Weather Service forecast figures quoted in the report showed sustained winds of 25–40 mph and gusts up to 55 mph in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, with relative humidity as low as 4%. In central Kansas, gusts were forecast to reach 45 mph, with humidity around 10%.
The National Weather Service warned that fires that developed could spread rapidly. These conditions and advisories refer to the forecast discussed on April 17, 2025; they should not be treated as current alerts.

Separate Ohio advisories
The report also noted frost advisories in parts of southern Ohio after overnight temperatures reached the mid-30s Fahrenheit. Thunderstorms were expected there late the following day, with damaging winds identified as the main severe-weather threat. This was a separate regional forecast from the Southern Plains fire-weather warnings.
