To increase online sales and profit, find where suitable shoppers drop out, improve that part of the buying journey, and measure completed orders and contribution margin—not clicks or revenue alone. The 27 ideas below are a menu for diagnosis, not a guarantee that every change will work for every store.

Start with a useful measure of sales and profit

Before changing a campaign or checkout, decide what “conversion” means for your store. Shopify defines ecommerce conversion rate as orders divided by website visits; analytics products may label the metric differently or count visits and sessions in different ways. Choose a numerator, denominator, time period, and geography, then keep them consistent when comparing results. Shopify explains the definition and measurement caveats in its 2026 ecommerce conversion rate guide.

Conversion rate does not show whether an order was profitable. Track contribution per order or per visitor alongside revenue: subtract relevant product costs, discounts, advertising, shipping subsidies, fulfillment, payment fees, and expected return costs. Select the cost categories that fit your business and apply them consistently. A campaign can lift order volume while reducing the money left to cover overhead and generate profit.

Ask “how can I increase my online sales and website traffic?” as two related but different questions. More visits help only when they are relevant and can buy at an acceptable cost. Diagnose the funnel by acquisition source, device, customer status, category, and geography before deciding whether you need more qualified traffic, better product information, a smoother checkout, or stronger repeat purchasing.

What is a good ecommerce conversion rate?

There is no universal target. Category, price, traffic source, device, purchase frequency, and how familiar shoppers are with a brand can all affect the rate. Outside figures are rough reference points, not promises or goals for an individual store.

The following measures use different datasets and methods, so they are not interchangeable. Shopify’s August 2026 guide reports the global and category figures below; it attributes the 1.4% figure to Statista, the 2.66% figure to Dynamic Yield, and its category averages to Shopify-store data for June 2026. Stripe’s September 2026 guide separately reports an around-2.2% global average across industries. Treat that as Stripe’s reported figure, not a reconciliation of the other benchmarks.

Reported measure Figure Context
Global ecommerce visits converting to purchases 1.4% Q1 2026; Statista, as reported by Shopify in August 2026.
Global average conversion rate 2.66% Dynamic Yield benchmark of more than 400 brands, as reported by Shopify in August 2026.
Global average ecommerce conversion rate Around 2.2% Across industries, as reported by Stripe in its guide last updated September 14, 2026.
Food and beverage 4.58% Shopify-store average for June 2026, as reported by Shopify.
Beauty and personal care 5.32% Shopify-store average for June 2026, as reported by Shopify.
Pet care and veterinary services 5.7% Shopify-store average for June 2026, as reported by Shopify.
Fashion, accessories, and apparel 2.77% Shopify-store average for June 2026, as reported by Shopify.
Home and furniture 1.29% Shopify-store average for June 2026, as reported by Shopify.
Consumer goods 1.76% Shopify-store average for June 2026, as reported by Shopify.
Luxury and jewelry 0.63% Shopify-store average for June 2026, as reported by Shopify.

Compare your own store with its earlier performance and, when possible, with a like-for-like category, channel, and device. A blended storewide figure can hide a weak mobile checkout or a high-converting returning-customer segment.

Attract qualified demand

1. Define your best-fit customer and buying occasion

Identify who is most likely to value the product, what they are trying to solve, and which alternatives they consider. Use customer questions, returns, support messages, and purchase patterns to sharpen that picture. A clearer target helps you select useful search terms, content topics, and advertising audiences; measure qualified visits and contribution from resulting orders, not traffic growth by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Make the offer easy to understand

State what the product does, who it suits, and what makes it meaningfully different. If you change a price, bundle, or promotion, record the full offer and compare the resulting orders and margin with a relevant baseline. Avoid treating a short-term sales bump as success if discounting or added costs consume the gain.

3. Improve search visibility and product-feed accuracy

Use descriptive product names and accurate attributes such as size, color, material, or compatibility wherever they apply. Keep prices, stock status, and landing-page details aligned with what appears in search results and shopping feeds. Check organic visits and feed-driven orders for relevance, then review whether those visits generate profitable sales.

4. Publish useful, category-specific content

Create buying guides, comparison pages, sizing help, or care instructions that answer genuine questions from your intended customers. Link readers to relevant products without making the page a disguised sales pitch. Review the content’s qualified visits, assisted purchases, and maintenance cost over an appropriate period.

5. Match advertising creative to its landing page

Carry the same product, price, promotion, and promise from an ad into the page it opens. A mismatch may attract clicks without attracting shoppers who are ready to buy. Compare completed orders and contribution by campaign and landing page, rather than optimizing for click-through rate alone.

The package also includes 20 test printing papers to get you started right away.

6. Set paid-acquisition goals around value and margin

Set campaign targets using conversion value and the costs that matter to your business. Google Ads says advertisers switching from target CPA to target ROAS can see 14% more conversion value at a similar ROAS on average; Google presents this as an average claim, and the available description does not give method details. It is not a forecast for a particular advertiser. See Google Ads’ tips for driving online sales, and compare actual incremental contribution and customer quality, not just attributed revenue.

7. Build consent-based owned audiences

Invite shoppers who agree to hear from you to receive useful product, launch, or replenishment messages. Use the channels and consent practices applicable to your customers, and make opt-out straightforward. Track attributable repeat orders and margin after message and incentive costs; list growth is not itself a sale.

8. Coordinate promotions with inventory and fulfillment

Plan seasonal campaigns around stock, delivery capacity, and the products customers are likely to seek. A promotion that sends demand toward unavailable items or creates fulfillment delays can waste acquisition spend and damage the buying experience. Watch stockouts, delivery performance, cancellations, and contribution during the campaign.

Help shoppers find and understand products

9. Use navigation and category names shoppers recognize

Organize the catalog around familiar product types and shopping needs rather than internal company terminology. Check whether shoppers can reach important categories on both desktop and mobile, and monitor category-page engagement and onward product views for signs that people are finding the right section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Make on-site search and filters practical

Support common product terms and useful refinements such as size, price, fit, or compatibility where the catalog permits. Check search terms that return no results or lead to exits, and make filter controls usable on small screens. Evaluate product discovery and completed orders from search and filtered browsing.

11. Write specific titles and descriptions

Describe the item accurately, including the attributes that help distinguish variants or determine suitability. Answer likely pre-purchase questions rather than relying on generic promotional language. Fewer avoidable misunderstandings may also help reduce preventable returns, though the effect should be checked against your own return reasons and order data.

12. Show useful product imagery and dimensions

Use clear images that show the product from helpful angles and, where relevant, in context. Provide dimensions and scale information for items where size is difficult to judge from a picture. Measure changes through product engagement, conversion, and return reasons rather than image clicks alone.

13. Explain fit, compatibility, ingredients, or specifications

Give the details that determine whether an item is suitable: for example, a sizing guide, compatible models, ingredients, or technical specifications. Put the information near the decision point and make it easy to scan. If shoppers still ask the same suitability questions or return items for mismatch, improve the relevant details.

14. Disclose the full price and delivery terms early

Make shipping charges, taxes or fees where known, delivery options, and return terms accessible before the final checkout step. If a total depends on location or delivery choice, explain when shoppers will see the exact amount. This makes the cost easier to evaluate before someone invests time in checkout.

15. Keep stock status and availability clear

Show whether the selected variant is available and provide a realistic delivery expectation where you can support one. Make unavailable options visibly unavailable rather than allowing a shopper to discover the problem late in the process. Monitor cancellations, support contacts, and abandoned checkouts tied to availability or delivery.

16. Use genuine reviews and customer evidence with context

Show authentic feedback in a way that helps shoppers assess the product, and explain relevant context such as the product variant when available. Do not imply that an individual experience is typical or conceal material limitations. Track whether reviews address common doubts and whether their use changes orders or return patterns.

17. Recommend related products only when they help

Suggest accessories or complementary items when they are genuinely relevant to the shopper’s choice. Keep recommendations from obscuring the main product or creating needless complexity. Compare basket contribution after discounts, fulfillment, and returns—not average order value alone.

Reduce purchase friction

18. Review the entire checkout as a first-time customer

Place a test order on desktop and mobile, following the path a new customer would take. Note every required field, repeated entry, surprise cost, unclear instruction, and error that blocks progress. Shopify’s August 2026 guide quotes Curtis Ulrich, director of ecommerce at Aviator Nation: “When you’re not having to put in your email address, you’re not having to re-input your shipping address, the impact that has across conversion when you’re processing hundreds of thousands of transactions a year is really meaningful,” says Curtis Ulrich, director of ecommerce at Aviator Nation.

19. Improve mobile speed and layout

Check page performance and whether key product and checkout controls are usable on smaller screens. Shopify Help Center identifies 2.5 seconds as a “good” Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) threshold; it is a performance threshold, not a promised sales lift. Shopify explains the metric in its overview of web performance. Stripe’s guide reports an association between a 0.1-second mobile load-time improvement and an 8% conversion lift for retail sites; treat that as a claim published by Stripe, not an expected effect for your store. Test performance changes and monitor mobile orders and page experience.

20. Keep checkout forms focused and support autofill

Ask only for information needed to complete and fulfill the order, and use appropriate browser autofill where the checkout supports it. Avoid making customers re-enter details already provided. Compare form errors and successful checkouts before and after a change, while checking that address and contact information remain accurate.

21. Allow guest checkout where it fits the business

Do not require account creation before purchase unless there is a clear operational or product reason. Letting shoppers complete an order first can avoid a forced registration step; offer account creation afterward if useful. In a 2025 US shopper survey cited by Shopify, forced account creation was reported as a checkout-abandonment reason by 19% of respondents. That survey result identifies a reported reason, not a guaranteed recoverable share of your store’s abandoned carts.

22. Show delivery costs and timing before the final step

Surface available shipping options, charges, and estimated delivery timing as early as your order and location information allow. In the same 2025 US shopper survey cited by Shopify, extra costs such as shipping, tax, or fees were the leading reported checkout-abandonment reason at 39%; slow delivery was 21%. These are survey responses, not universal causal estimates. Shopify reports an aggregate average online cart abandonment rate of 70.22% attributed to Baymard Institute; it is not a prediction for an individual store. The survey and abandonment figures are presented in Shopify’s 2026 guide.

23. Offer payment methods suited to your audience and region

Review what customers in your target markets expect to use, and compare each option’s availability, total cost, integration effort, and effect on the purchase flow. Do not add a method solely because it is fashionable: confirm its terms and performance in your own customer mix. Stripe reports that its own experiment across more than 150,000 checkout sessions found up to 14% revenue lift among businesses displaying buy now, pay later (BNPL). This is a Stripe-published proprietary claim, not an independently established result for every merchant or market; consider customer suitability and the payment terms before adopting a method.

24. Explain payment security and make error recovery easy

Use clear, accurate security information and make it straightforward to correct a declined payment or other checkout error. Provide a visible route to support when a shopper is stuck. In the 2025 US survey cited by Shopify, payment-security distrust was reported by 19% of respondents as an abandonment reason, while a long or complicated checkout was reported by 18%. Use these figures as context for possible friction, not as proof of what is happening on your site.

Improve retention and order economics

25. Make post-purchase service a reason to return

Send clear order, delivery, and support information, then resolve problems promptly. For products customers buy repeatedly, timely and useful follow-up can make the next purchase easier without relying on a blanket discount. Measure repeat purchase and contribution by cohort, accounting for the cost of service and any incentives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

26. Use replenishment, bundles, subscriptions, and discounts selectively

Offer replenishment reminders or a subscription only when the product and purchase cycle make them genuinely useful. Use bundles and cross-sells to solve a customer need, and set discount thresholds from contribution margin rather than intuition. A higher order value is not necessarily a better order if the offer gives away too much margin or adds costly fulfillment.

27. Review fulfillment, returns, and product mix for margin leaks

Break down contribution by product, shipping method, and customer segment. Look for shipping subsidies, payment fees, return costs, or an unprofitable product mix that could be eroding otherwise healthy sales. Consider whether product information, packaging, or fulfillment choices can address avoidable costs without making the experience worse.

Turn the 27 ideas into a controlled improvement process

Shopify’s guide reports Baymard Institute’s estimate that checkout design improvements could produce a 35.26% potential conversion increase. This is an estimate of opportunity from Baymard’s 2024 research as reported by Shopify, not an expected lift for a particular shop. Use it as a reason to inspect checkout, not as a forecast.

  1. Instrument the funnel. Record the key steps from product discovery through completed order, and verify that analytics definitions and consent settings are consistent. Shopify describes behavior reports in its Behavior reports help page.
  2. Find the largest meaningful drop-off. Segment by device, acquisition source, new versus returning customer, category, and geography. Use the segments to identify where an issue is concentrated rather than assuming the storewide average explains it.
  3. Choose one interpretable change where feasible. Rank candidates by potential impact, confidence in the diagnosis, implementation cost, and customer or compliance risk. Avoid changing many parts of the journey at once if that would make the result hard to interpret.
  4. Set a primary measure and guardrails first. Choose a business-specific outcome such as contribution per visit or completed orders at an acceptable margin. Monitor relevant guardrails, including payment failures, refunds, support contacts, delivery performance, and returns.
  5. Allow a useful comparison. Account for seasonality, promotions, channel mix, and the amount of data available. Use a suitable comparison period or experiment design; a rise that happens after a change is not, by itself, proof that the change caused it.
  6. Record the result, including no change or harm. Keep the change, audience, dates, measure, and outcome together. A null or negative result is useful evidence for deciding what to keep, revise, or stop.

Shopify’s guide also reports Baymard Institute’s 2025 US survey findings on checkout abandonment and its 2024 checkout-design estimate; Stripe’s guide includes its own performance and BNPL claims. Those figures come from different contexts and should not be combined into a single expected uplift. Use your own stable measures to decide whether a change improves the business you actually run.
