Nurses can earn additional income through extra clinical shifts, teaching, writing, consulting, and other services that draw on healthcare experience. The right fit depends less on a job title than on its duties, schedule, qualifications, location, and whether it constitutes nursing practice. No reliable cross-role earnings comparison establishes which option pays the most, so treat these as ideas to investigate—not income promises or confirmed openings.
How to compare nurse side hustles
A current overview of nurse side-work ideas includes remote and in-person options, as well as clinical and nonclinical roles. Use those distinctions to narrow the field, then check the actual duties and requirements for each opportunity.
- Clinical responsibility: Will you assess, advise, teach, or provide care as a nurse, or deliver a nonclinical service using healthcare knowledge?
- Setting: Is the work remote, in person, or a mix?
- Schedule: Does the employer offer shifts or hours that fit around your primary role?
- Qualifications: What license, certification, experience, or additional training does the specific position require?
- Regulatory and business requirements: Could the work fall within nursing practice, or require separate compliance, insurance, or business arrangements?
The ideas below are categories identified by a secondary overview, not verified openings. Availability, pay, prerequisites, and demand vary by employer and location. The overview’s list does not provide a sound basis for ranking these roles by earnings.

2. Telehealth nursing
Remote work may include triage, patient education, advising, or other services. Working online does not automatically make the activity nonclinical: the patient’s location and the nature of the work can affect which rules apply.
3. Immunization clinics
Seasonal or event-based clinics may offer vaccination work. Confirm the required credentials, duties, supervision, and local authorization with the employer and relevant board.
4. Home care
Home-based care can involve direct patient support in a setting different from a hospital or clinic. Clarify the level of care, patient needs, hours, and whether you are working through an agency or another arrangement.
5. Event medical work
Sports, festivals, and other events may need medical staff. Ask what resources, escalation procedures, and clinical responsibilities are provided at the event.

18. Health content creation
Video, audio, or other educational content can be another way to communicate nursing knowledge. Decide what you can responsibly explain, distinguish general education from individual advice, and account for the ongoing work of producing content.
19. Cosmetic injection nursing
Cosmetic services may be an option for suitably qualified clinicians, but a general RN license should not be treated as automatic authority to offer them. Verify applicable practice rules, qualifications, supervision, and business requirements before pursuing this work.
20. Mobile IV therapy
Mobile IV services raise clinical and business questions that depend on the specific service and jurisdiction. Do not assume that an RN license alone authorizes a particular model; check current rules and requirements for the duties and setting involved.
Check scope of practice before taking work
The role label alone does not determine whether an activity is nursing practice. The American Nurses Association says scope depends on context, education, role, experience, certification, setting, population, and lawful authority. The ANA scope-of-practice guidance and its Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 5th Edition can serve as references; the publication is not a prerequisite to taking side work.
NCSBN’s Scope of Practice Decision-Making Framework asks nurses to assess whether a specific activity is permitted given their education, licensure, competence, and the applicable nurse practice act and rules. NCSBN describes the tool as educational, not a replacement for jurisdiction-specific rules.
Remote work needs the same careful review. For example, Texas treats electronic teaching, consulting, triage, advising, and direct services as telenursing and applies Texas requirements when the patient is in Texas. That is Texas-specific guidance, not a nationwide rule; consult the relevant board for the patient’s location and the activity involved. Texas Board of Nursing telenursing guidance explains the state’s approach.
Plan for taxes on side income
Part-time work and the absence of a tax form do not, by themselves, remove the obligation to report gig income. The IRS says gig income must be reported; self-employed gig workers with net earnings of $400 or more must file and may need to make estimated tax payments. Your individual filing obligations depend on your circumstances and the applicable tax year. Review the IRS Gig Economy Tax Center and consider a tax professional if you are unsure how the rules apply.
Quick Recap
Choose a first option to investigate
- Set your constraints. Decide how many hours you can realistically give the work and whether you prefer remote or in-person work.
- Choose the work category. Start with clinical shifts, education and communication, consulting and adjacent services, or a business-building idea.
- Read the actual duties. Identify what you would do, for whom, and where the patient or client is located.
- Verify requirements. Check the employer’s qualifications and the relevant board’s current guidance before accepting clinical or potentially regulated duties.
- Estimate the full commitment. Account for preparation, travel, scheduling, training, and recordkeeping—not just time spent with a client or on shift.
- Plan for income reporting. Keep records of side income and expenses and review current IRS guidance for your situation.
