The ranking below reproduces RareCars.com’s approximate 2025 estimates; they are not live asking prices or independently verified appraisals. Actual value depends on the individual car’s provenance, condition and sale context.
How to read these rare-car prices
RareCars.com’s 2025 article gives the estimates below in U.S. dollars. They are best read as a dated ranking, not as current market quotes: an estimate, a completed auction result and a reported private transaction are different kinds of evidence. The estimates have not been independently validated model by model here. RareCars.com also notes that provenance, condition and auction dynamics can affect prices.
Two documented transactions provide useful context, but neither should be substituted for the estimate of every example of a model. In an invitation-only auction on 5 May 2022, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold to a private collector for €135 million, according to Mercedes-Benz and RM Sotheby’s. Guinness World Records reports the same transaction as $142,769,250 (£115.1 million; €135.1 million); those are converted reports of one sale, not separate prices. In August 2018, RM Sotheby’s sold a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 3413 GT, for $48,405,000 at Monterey. That result includes buyer’s premium.

What the biggest documented prices mean
Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé
Mercedes-Benz says only two 1955 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé prototypes were built. One sold at auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum on 5 May 2022 for €135 million. The second remains with Mercedes-Benz. RM Sotheby’s says the purchaser agreed to make the sold car accessible for public display on special occasions. The transaction is commonly described as the most expensive car sold at auction, but its record price does not establish a standard price for another car, or a current valuation.
Ferrari 250 GTO
The 2025 list estimates a 250 GTO at about $80 million, while the cited public auction record is $48,405,000 for chassis 3413 GT at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale on 24–25 August 2018. These figures differ because one is an article estimate and the other is a dated result for a specific car. The auction result includes buyer’s premium; it should not be conflated with private-sale reports or treated as a guaranteed price for another 250 GTO.

Why a rare car’s price is hard to generalize
- Scarcity is not a single metric. A production total, number of prototypes, surviving examples and number of cars available to buy describe different things. RareCars.com says there were 36 Ferrari 250 GTO chassis and fewer than four Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantics; those counts are claims from that article, not independently confirmed here. Mercedes-Benz independently confirms two 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé prototypes.
- Identity and provenance matter. Chassis identity, documented ownership and competition history can distinguish one example from another. Condition, originality and restoration also affect what a buyer may pay.
- Price basis matters. A public auction result records a particular sale on a particular date. An estimate is an opinion about value, while an asking price is a seller’s request. A private transaction may not have the same public documentation or terms.
- Currency and fees matter. Preserve the original currency and note whether a reported auction total includes buyer’s premium. Converted figures can differ through exchange rates and rounding, as the reported dollar and euro amounts for the Uhlenhaut Coupé illustrate.
