Running a 24/7 YouTube stream uses data continuously. Unlike a live stream that broadcasts for a few hours and stops, a channel that streams around the clock generates data 24 hours every day for 30 days straight. The numbers escalate quickly, and understanding them is critical before you commit hardware and bandwidth to this approach.
Keep a 24/7 YouTube Stream Running Without a PC
StreamNeo is designed for an owned or licensed prerecorded video that needs to run continuously on YouTube without leaving a PC or encoder running. Upload the video, paste your YouTube stream key, and start the broadcast in the cloud while your computer stays off.
After setup, StreamNeo checks stream health every 30 seconds and automatically restarts dropped streams. That makes it a practical fit for an always-on channel where keeping a local machine and connection active is undesirable.
To test the workflow before committing, use StreamNeo’s free 24-hour 720p/30fps trial; no card is required at signup. A trial run gives you a concrete starting point for comparing the planned stream setup with your monthly data budget.

The data calculation depends on two variables: the resolution and bitrate of your stream. Resolution is the pixel dimension (720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K). Bitrate is the amount of data per second the stream uses. Higher resolution and higher bitrate both increase data usage, but not linearly. A 1080p stream does not use twice the data of a 720p stream. The relationship depends on the codec and the specific bitrate you choose.
This article breaks down the real numbers using standard streaming configurations so you can estimate your actual data needs.
How Bitrate Relates to Data Usage
Bitrate is measured in kilobits per second (Kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). For a 24/7 stream, you set a target bitrate and the encoder sends that amount of data continuously.
To convert bitrate to total data over time, use this formula:
Total data = bitrate (in megabits per second) × seconds in the period
For a full month (30 days, 2,592,000 seconds):
Total data (in gigabytes) = (bitrate in Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds) / 8000
Breaking this down: bitrate in Mbps is divided by 8 to convert to megabytes per second, then multiplied by the total seconds in the period.
For example, a 5 Mbps stream for 30 days uses:
(5 × 2,592,000) / 8000 = 1,620 GB per month
A 10 Mbps stream for 30 days uses:
(10 × 2,592,000) / 8000 = 3,240 GB per month

Standard Streaming Configurations and Monthly Data
| Resolution | Codec | Recommended Bitrate | Monthly Data (30 days) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p (1280×720) | H.264 | 4-6 Mbps | 1,080-1,620 GB |
| 1080p (1920×1080) | H.264 | 8-12 Mbps | 2,160-3,240 GB |
| 1440p (2560×1440) | H.264 | 15-20 Mbps | 4,050-5,400 GB |
| 4K (3840×2160) | H.264 | 25-40 Mbps | 6,750-10,800 GB |
| 720p | HEVC | 2-3 Mbps | 540-810 GB |
| 1080p | HEVC | 4-6 Mbps | 1,080-1,620 GB |
| 1440p | HEVC | 8-10 Mbps | 2,160-2,700 GB |
| 4K | HEVC | 12-15 Mbps | 3,240-4,050 GB |
These are realistic numbers based on standard streaming practices. Actual usage varies based on encoder settings, scene complexity, and motion.
For a typical 24/7 music or lofi stream at 720p H.264, expect 1,000-1,600 GB per month. For a 1080p stream, expect 2,000-3,200 GB per month.
Upload Bandwidth Required
Data usage is the total volume. Bandwidth is the rate at which you send it. A 24/7 stream requires your upload connection to sustain the bitrate continuously.
A 5 Mbps stream requires a reliable upload connection of at least 7-8 Mbps to have headroom for network variation. A 10 Mbps stream requires 12-15 Mbps upload. Many home internet plans offer 10-20 Mbps upload, which is marginal for continuous 1080p streaming but workable.
If your upload connection drops below the stream’s bitrate, the stream will buffer or disconnect. YouTube has retry logic that restarts the stream if it drops briefly, but repeated disconnections will eventually cause the stream to end.
For a continuous YouTube broadcast, StreamNeo checks stream health every 30 seconds and automatically restarts dropped streams. The stream runs in the cloud while your PC stays off, removing the need to keep a local encoder running.

ISP Data Caps and 24/7 Streaming
Many home internet plans have monthly data caps. If your ISP caps upload data, a 24/7 stream will hit the cap quickly and may trigger throttling or overage charges.

Consider your ISP’s policy:
A 1,500 GB monthly data stream will exceed the cap on a plan with a 1,000 GB limit. Overage charges typically run $10-20 per 100 GB. A single month of 1,500 GB on a capped plan could cost $50-100 extra.
Some ISPs offer unlimited data plans, but these typically have speed throttles or are available only in specific areas. If unlimited data is an option, it becomes the financially prudent choice for a 24/7 stream.
Dedicated server upload (as opposed to home internet) often uses metered data pricing. A cloud server or VPS hosting your stream may charge per gigabyte of outbound bandwidth. At typical rates of $0.10-0.20 per GB, a 1,500 GB stream costs $150-300 per month in bandwidth charges alone.
Understanding your ISP’s policy and pricing is essential before you decide whether a 24/7 home stream is feasible.
If keeping a local connection and computer active is the concern, StreamNeo lets you upload the prerecorded video, paste your YouTube stream key, and run the broadcast in the cloud while your computer stays off. If your data budget is tight, you can reduce usage without eliminating the stream:
Lower resolution. A 720p stream uses 40-50% less data than a 1080p stream. For music or lofi content, 720p is usually sufficient.
Reduce bitrate within the resolution tier. Instead of 6 Mbps for 720p, use 4 Mbps. The quality difference is noticeable but acceptable for background content.
Use HEVC codec instead of H.264. HEVC achieves similar quality at 30-40% lower bitrate. Not all streaming platforms support HEVC, but if yours does, the data savings are significant.
Lower frame rate. 24 fps instead of 30 fps or 60 fps reduces data by 20-30% with minimal visual impact for static content.
A 720p, 4 Mbps, 24 fps HEVC stream produces roughly 540 GB per month. This is the lower bound for acceptable quality on a 24/7 stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitoring and Forecasting
Once your stream is running, monitor actual data usage. YouTube does not directly report bandwidth in its analytics, but if you are streaming from your computer or a VPS, you can measure it using system tools.
Measure for a week, then extrapolate to 30 days. If your weekly usage is 300 GB, monthly usage is about 1,200 GB. This lets you confirm your encoder settings are producing the expected data volume before committing to a month.

If your measured usage is higher than expected, investigate:
– Is the encoder set to the bitrate you configured, or is it adjusting higher for quality?
– Are network interruptions causing re-buffering or re-encoding, which increases data?
– Is the resolution or frame rate different from what you intended?
These adjustments often correct the problem quickly.
Examples from Real 24/7 Channels
A lofi music channel running 720p H.264 at 5 Mbps uses about 1,350 GB per month. On a 1,000 GB capped home plan, this costs $70 in overages. Switching to an unlimited home plan ($150/month) or a budget server ($30-50/month) both save money compared to overages.
A documentary marathon channel running 1080p H.264 at 8 Mbps uses about 2,160 GB per month. This exceeds most home data caps significantly. A dedicated server with unmetered bandwidth ($30-80/month) is the practical choice.
A gaming highlights channel that streams 1440p H.264 at 15 Mbps uses about 4,050 GB per month. At this volume, only enterprise cloud infrastructure or dedicated unmetered hosting is viable. The cost starts at $50-100+/month in bandwidth alone.
For most small 24/7 YouTube channels, 720p to 1080p H.264 at reasonable bitrates is the sweet spot: acceptable quality, manageable data costs, and within reach of home internet or budget cloud hosting.
What YouTube Recommends
YouTube’s official streaming recommendations vary by platform, but for 24/7 YouTube streams, the baseline is:
– Minimum 2 Mbps upload for 720p 30fps (not realistic for a 24/7 residential stream)
– Recommended 5-8 Mbps upload for 1080p 30fps
– 10 Mbps+ for higher resolutions
These recommendations assume upload-only, without considering your own device use or other network traffic. For a residential 24/7 stream, add 50% headroom to these numbers.
