23andMe’s bankruptcy sale is complete: TTAM Research Institute acquired substantially all of the company’s assets on July 14, 2025. The sale terms preserve customers’ ability to request deletion and opt out of research, and place conditions on certain future transfers of genetic data. If you want to act, you can start account deletion in Account Settings or change research participation separately. Neither the sale commitments nor deletion instructions promise that every record disappears immediately or eliminate all privacy risk.
What happened to 23andMe—and who owns the service now?
23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 23, 2025, and pursued a court-supervised sale. The court approved a sale to TTAM Research Institute, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation led by 23andMe co-founder and former CEO Anne Wojcicki. The debtors reported that the transaction closed on July 14, 2025.
A 2025 SEC-filed report says the sale of substantially all assets brought $302.5 million in cash, plus assumed and paid liabilities. That final reported amount differs from the $305 million proposed in the June sale announcement. Lemonaid Health was addressed separately: the filing reports $2.5 million for that business under separate transaction terms.
Regeneron was not the final buyer. It had been proposed as a buyer earlier in the process, but the final bidding round selected TTAM and the earlier agreement was to be replaced upon court approval. [SEC-filed transaction report]

What does the sale mean for your genetic and account data?
Customer data was part of the privacy issue surrounding the asset transfer. The FTC’s March 31, 2025, letter identified the sensitive information potentially involved as including genetic information, biological samples, health and ancestry information, contact and billing details, and other account information. The letter expressed the FTC Chairman’s concern about a possible transfer; it was not a court ruling that the sale violated the law. The chairman wrote, “It is my understanding that 23andMe user data may be an asset that is sold as part of the above-referenced bankruptcy proceedings involving 23andMe.” [FTC letter]
TTAM’s sale commitments say it will comply with existing privacy policies and applicable law, process personal data according to the consents, policies, terms, and notices then in effect, and honor customer choices to delete accounts and opt out of research. The commitments also include customer notice and conditions on certain later transfers of genetic data. [Court-approval announcement] [Sale commitments]

These are documented commitments, not a guarantee that data is completely safe, that every record will be erased on request, or that genetic information can never be transferred under any circumstances. The transfer rules have conditions, and privacy commitments do not remove security, legal, or operational risks.
Choose the action that matches what you want to change
| Action | What it changes | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Request account deletion | Starts the account-closure and deletion process; the support article says stored saliva samples will be discarded. | After you confirm the emailed request, the process begins automatically, account access is lost, and the request cannot be canceled or reversed. Some limited information may be retained for legal obligations or as described in the privacy statement. [23andMe account-closure instructions] |
| Change research participation | Changes your research consent without making account deletion necessary. | Review Research and Product Consents in your account. The sale commitments preserve the ability to opt out; check current instructions and settings before changing them. [Sale commitments] |
| Change sample-storage preference | Changes your choice about storage of a saliva sample. | California’s March 2025 alert said customers who had elected sample storage could change that preference in account settings. The alert concerns California residents and should not be treated as a statement of every jurisdiction’s law. [California Attorney General alert] |
How to request deletion
- Before you start: Download any information you want to keep and review the current privacy statement. Deletion confirmation ends account access and cannot be undone.
- Open Account Settings: Sign in to your 23andMe account and begin the account-deletion request there. The company’s support instructions describe this as the starting point; interface labels may change.
- Confirm the emailed request: Follow the confirmation email. The deletion process begins automatically after confirmation.
- Allow for the stated exceptions: 23andMe says stored saliva samples will be discarded, but some limited information may be retained where legally required or as described in its privacy statement. Do not assume that confirmation erases every trace immediately.
What the 2023 breach and 2026 lawsuit do—and do not—show
The 2023 data breach remains relevant context, but it is separate from the bankruptcy sale. In 2026, California’s Attorney General announced a lawsuit against Chrome Holding Co., formerly known as 23andMe, concerning the breach. The state alleges that the company failed to take reasonable protective measures and misrepresented aspects of its breach response. Those are allegations in a lawsuit, not established findings of a court. The announcement alone does not establish the lawsuit’s later status or outcome. California rights are not a universal rule
California’s Attorney General said California law gives residents rights to direct deletion of genetic data and provided guidance about sample-storage preferences. Rights and procedures can differ by state or country, so California’s alert should not be treated as a legal guide for every 23andMe customer. If you live elsewhere, check the law that applies where you live and the company’s current privacy statement.
