21 Free Linux Financial Software Options — What the 2019 List Means in 2026

The famous 21-tool Linux finance list mixes household budgeting, double-entry ledgers, investing, ERP, cryptocurrency wallets, and calculators. This guide sorts each option by job and explains why GnuCash, Skrooge, command-line ledgers, and business platforms should not be judged on one scale.

There is no single “best” Linux finance program. For most households, start with GnuCash if you want full double-entry accounting, or compare HomeBank, KMyMoney, Money Manager Ex, Grisbi, and Skrooge for a lighter personal-finance workflow. Ledger, hledger, and beancount suit people who prefer text-based bookkeeping; ERPNext, Odoo, and Apache OFBiz are business systems, not budgeting apps.

The 21-name list below comes from LinuxLinks’ roundup published June 26, 2019. Treat it as a map of software categories rather than proof that every project is still maintained. GnuCash is the clearest current reference point: its project page lists stable release 5.16 and advises Linux users to consider the package supplied by their distribution.

How to read this 21-app list

The roundup mixes household budgeting, formal accounting, command-line ledgers, investment analysis, enterprise resource planning, cryptocurrency wallets, and a calculator. Those products solve different problems, so ranking all 21 on one scale would be misleading.

Reader’s job Best starting points from the list What to expect
Household budgeting and account tracking GnuCash, HomeBank, KMyMoney, Money Manager Ex, Grisbi, Skrooge, jGnash Desktop personal-finance workflows; depth and current maintenance vary by project.
Formal or text-based double-entry bookkeeping Ledger, hledger, beancount, SQL-Ledger, LedgerSMB Ledger-style records and reports, often requiring more setup or command-line comfort.
Stocks and market analysis JStock, Chart Geany, Market Analysis System Investment-oriented tools rather than complete household accounting replacements.
Business operations and ERP ERPNext, Odoo, Apache OFBiz Broader systems for business processes; excessive for simple home budgets.
Cryptocurrency wallets Armory, Electrum Wallet and transaction-management software, not general-purpose budgeting apps.
Calculation and financial math Qalculate! A calculator for computations, not an account register or ledger.

Use the category that matches your job, then check the project’s current documentation, release activity, Linux package, and import options before committing data.

Best broad accounting choice: GnuCash

GnuCash is the strongest all-purpose anchor in the list. The project describes it as personal and small-business financial-accounting software, freely licensed under the GNU GPL and available for GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows. It is designed to track bank accounts, stocks, income, and expenses.

Choose it when you need a real accounting model rather than only a spending dashboard: multiple accounts, income and expense categories, investment records, and small-business books can live in one system. That breadth also means a steeper learning curve than a simple envelope-budgeting app.

The project’s current download page lists stable release 5.16. On Linux, the project advises considering the version provided by your distribution; compare that package with the project’s documented release when you need a newer feature or fix.

Personal-finance alternatives for a lighter desktop workflow

These seven names are the most natural alternatives when your goal is household money management rather than an ERP deployment or a terminal-only ledger. The 2019 roundup identifies them as personal-finance choices, but it does not establish identical feature sets or current maintenance for each one.

HomeBank

HomeBank is aimed at personal finance. It is a sensible candidate for users who want a focused desktop account-and-budget application without adopting a broader business-accounting system. Confirm its current Linux packages and the reports and import formats you need.

KMyMoney

KMyMoney is another personal-finance choice, particularly attractive if you already use KDE software. Check the current project documentation for supported account features, reports, and file compatibility before migrating a working file.

Money Manager Ex

Money Manager Ex belongs on a household-finance shortlist. Validate its current release, Linux distribution support, and migration path for your existing data rather than assuming the capabilities of a 2019 listing remain unchanged.

Grisbi

Grisbi is listed as a personal-finance program. It may fit users who want a straightforward desktop register, but current documentation should be the authority for supported platforms, reporting, and import/export behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skrooge

Skrooge is a personal-finance option with unusually well-documented interoperability. KDE documentation says it can import and export QIF, CSV, SKROOGE, and KMYMONEY files, and import Microsoft Money, OFX, QFX, MT940, GnuCash, Grisbi, HomeBank, and Money Manager Ex data. That makes it the first candidate to test when migration from one of those formats is your deciding requirement.

Import support is not the same as a perfect conversion: preserve a copy of the original file, inspect account mappings and opening balances, and reconcile transactions after import.

jGnash

jGnash appears in the roundup alongside the other personal-finance tools. Treat it as a candidate for desktop money management, then verify its current Java/runtime requirements, Linux packaging, and data exchange options.

Choosing among the personal tools

  • Pick GnuCash when formal double-entry accounting, investments, or small-business books matter.
  • Shortlist HomeBank, KMyMoney, Money Manager Ex, Grisbi, or Skrooge when a household-focused interface is the priority.
  • Put Skrooge first in a migration trial if your source file is QIF, CSV, Microsoft Money, OFX, QFX, MT940, GnuCash, Grisbi, HomeBank, Money Manager Ex, or KMyMoney.
  • Install the distribution package in a test profile and verify backups before entering current transactions.

Command-line and ledger-style accounting

Ledger, hledger, beancount, SQL-Ledger, and LedgerSMB are not five skins for the same consumer budget app. They represent ledger-oriented or double-entry workflows. They appeal to users who value plain-text records, reproducible reports, automation, or accounting discipline over a conventional point-and-click register.

Ledger

Ledger is the reference name for text-based double-entry bookkeeping in this group. It suits users comfortable editing a ledger file and generating reports from it.

hledger

hledger is another ledger-style choice. Evaluate its current documentation and report syntax if you want a command-line workflow that can be maintained as plain text.

beancount

beancount belongs in the same text-first family. It is appropriate for people willing to define transactions and accounts in a structured ledger rather than relying on a GUI register.

SQL-Ledger

SQL-Ledger targets accounting backed by a database and is distinct from a lightweight household budget. Assess deployment, administration, and current support before using it for live books.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LedgerSMB

LedgerSMB is the business-oriented member of this ledger group. It is better considered for organizational accounting than for a single person tracking monthly spending.

For any text or database ledger, design your chart of accounts and backup process first. A powerful reporting engine cannot compensate for inconsistent transaction conventions or an untested restore.

Investment and market-analysis tools

JStock, Chart Geany, and Market Analysis System address securities or market analysis. They should be evaluated separately from personal accounting: a market chart or portfolio utility does not automatically provide household budgeting, bill tracking, tax categorization, or bank reconciliation.

JStock

JStock is listed as an investment-focused application. Consider it when stock monitoring is the main task, and verify current data-source availability and Linux runtime requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chart Geany

Chart Geany is grouped with market-analysis software. Its place in the list is for charting or analysis work, not as a replacement for an accounting ledger.

Market Analysis System

Market Analysis System is likewise an investment-analysis entry. Confirm that its current data feeds and supported markets match your use before relying on it for decisions.

Business and ERP platforms

ERPNext, Odoo, and Apache OFBiz cover broader business operations. They can be relevant when finance is connected to sales, purchasing, inventory, projects, or other organizational processes, but their scope and administration are disproportionate for a household budget.

ERPNext

ERPNext is the business-management option in the list. Examine deployment, user roles, accounting configuration, and ongoing maintenance before treating it as a production system.

  • Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware

Odoo

Odoo is another broad enterprise platform. Its suitability depends on the modules and operational workflow you need, not simply on whether it can record income and expenses.

Apache OFBiz

Apache OFBiz is an enterprise framework and business suite entry. It belongs in an organizational software evaluation, with implementation and administration considered alongside accounting features.

Cryptocurrency wallets and financial calculators

Armory and Electrum

Armory and Electrum are cryptocurrency-wallet entries, not substitutes for a general ledger. Wallet security, key backup, network compatibility, and current release status should be evaluated separately from budgeting needs. Do not assume that wallet transaction history provides the categorization and reconciliation controls of accounting software.

Qalculate!

Qalculate! is a calculator. It is useful for financial mathematics, conversions, and what-if calculations, but it does not maintain accounts, import bank statements, or replace a finance manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Migration and interoperability: test before switching

Data portability can matter more than a feature checklist. Start by identifying the export format your current application can produce, then confirm that the Linux candidate can import it and preserve dates, payees, categories, splits, transfers, securities, and opening balances.

  1. Create a read-only backup of the original finance file and an additional copy of any exported QIF, CSV, OFX, QFX, MT940, or application-specific file.
  2. Import into a test profile rather than your live book.
  3. Compare account balances and transaction counts for a known period.
  4. Check transfers, split transactions, investment lots, recurring entries, and opening balances manually.
  5. Reconcile the imported accounts against statements before deleting or abandoning the old application.

Skrooge has the broadest specifically documented import list in this roundup, while it is not established here that every other program has equivalent current support. Treat an advertised format as a starting point for a test, not a guarantee of lossless conversion.

A practical decision framework

  • Need household budgeting with minimal accounting overhead: compare HomeBank, KMyMoney, Money Manager Ex, Grisbi, and Skrooge.
  • Need personal plus small-business accounting: begin with GnuCash.
  • Prefer plain text, automation, and terminal reports: investigate Ledger, hledger, or beancount.
  • Need database-backed or organizational accounting: evaluate SQL-Ledger or LedgerSMB, and consider ERPNext, Odoo, or Apache OFBiz only when broader operations justify them.
  • Need stock research: look at JStock, Chart Geany, or Market Analysis System in addition to—not instead of—your accounting system.
  • Need a wallet: evaluate Armory or Electrum on cryptocurrency-security criteria.
  • Need calculations only: Qalculate! is the relevant entry.

Finally, check release dates, package availability for your distribution, supported operating systems, backup procedures, and documentation for the exact version you will install. The 2019 roundup is useful for discovering names, but current maintenance and migration behavior must be verified project by project.
