2027 Social Security COLA: What’s Confirmed, What Could Affect Your Payment, and What to Check

A 2027 Social Security COLA percentage was not confirmed in SSA’s information as of October 4, 2026. Here’s how the formula works and what to check about your net payment.

There is no confirmed 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) percentage in the official information available as of October 4, 2026. The Social Security Administration (SSA) said it would announce the next adjustment in October 2026; its published 2.8% figure applies to 2026, not 2027. So a “huge Trump Bump” is not an established benefit increase. You can prepare by checking your own benefit record and accounting for Medicare, taxes, and—if you work before full retirement age—the earnings test.

What is confirmed about the 2027 Social Security COLA?

As of October 4, 2026, SSA’s COLA information says the next adjustment will be announced in October 2026, but the official sources reviewed do not state a 2027 percentage. The confirmed adjustment is 2.8% for 2026, announced by SSA in 2025. That figure is not a forecast for 2027. SSA’s COLA information and its 2026 COLA fact sheet are the places to check for the official figure.

The phrase “Trump Bump” does not identify a separate Social Security payment or a competing COLA proposal established by these sources. The COLA is determined under a statutory formula, not by a headline or a discretionary bonus announcement.

How the annual COLA is calculated

SSA says the adjustment, if any, reflects the change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The comparison is between the average CPI-W for the third quarter of the current year and the third quarter of the last year in which a COLA took effect. SSA describes the rule this way: “The Social Security Act specifies a formula for determining each COLA.” See SSA’s explanation of the COLA formula.

The percentage is applied to a person’s benefit; it is not a promise that every recipient will receive the same dollar increase. For context only, SSA estimated that the average retired-worker benefit payable in January 2026 would be $2,071 a month after the 2026 COLA. That is a 2026 estimate, not a 2027 estimate or an individual payment prediction.

Why the COLA percentage may not equal the increase in money you keep

Medicare premiums can reduce the deposited amount

For Medicare enrollees, the standard Part B premium is generally deducted from the monthly Social Security payment. CMS set that standard premium at $202.90 a month for 2026. It is a 2026 amount, not a 2027 premium, and some beneficiaries pay an income-related adjustment; Part D costs depend on the person’s plan. Review your actual Medicare and benefit notices rather than assuming that the full gross COLA will appear as extra cash. CMS’s 2026 Medicare premium announcement provides the standard Part B figure.

Taxes depend on your other income

A COLA does not automatically mean that you owe federal income tax on benefits, nor does the percentage alone determine your tax bill. The taxable portion depends on your benefits together with other income and the applicable tax rules. Use the IRS’s Publication 915, Social Security and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits, and consider your complete income picture when planning.

Working before full retirement age can trigger withholding

The retirement earnings test is a withholding rule for certain beneficiaries who work before full retirement age; it is not a universal reduction in everyone’s basic benefit. SSA’s 2026 fact sheet gives these limits:

Situation in 2026 Earnings limit Withholding rule
Below full retirement age for all of 2026 $24,480 $1 in benefits withheld for every $2 earned above the limit
Reaching full retirement age during 2026 $65,160 in earnings for months before reaching full retirement age $1 in benefits withheld for every $3 earned above the limit

These are 2026 thresholds, not future-year limits. Check the applicable year’s figures and your circumstances with SSA’s retirement earnings test fact sheet before making a work or claiming decision.

What to check now to plan around your own payment

  1. Sign in to my Social Security. Review your benefit information and notices against your own records. SSA says COLA notices are available in the account’s Message Center. Start at my Social Security.
  2. When SSA posts the 2027 rate, apply it to your own gross benefit. The official COLA percentage and your starting benefit amount are separate inputs. Do not use the 2026 average retired-worker estimate as your personal baseline.
  3. If you have Medicare, check the actual deductions. Separate the standard Part B premium from any income-related adjustment and your Part D plan cost. The cited premium information here is for 2026 only.
  4. For taxes, consider all relevant income. Use IRS Publication 915 as guidance, but do not treat it as a personalized determination of your tax liability.
  5. If you are working before full retirement age, verify the current-year earnings limit. The 2026 thresholds above should not be carried forward to another year without confirmation.
