2026 SALT Deduction Limit: $40,400 and How to Claim It

The 2026 SALT cap is $40,400 for most filers, but income limits and the itemizing comparison determine how much you can actually deduct.

For tax year 2026, the federal deduction for eligible state and local taxes is capped at $40,400 for most filers and $20,200 for married taxpayers filing separately. The cap is reduced for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds the applicable threshold, and it is not a guaranteed deduction: you must have eligible taxes and benefit from itemizing rather than taking the standard deduction.

What is the SALT deduction limit for 2026?

The 2026 SALT limit is $40,400, or $20,200 for married filing separately. The limit applies to the combined deduction for eligible state and local taxes—not separately to income, sales, and property taxes. The IRS lists the amounts in Publication 505 (2026) and confirms them in its correction to the 2026 Form 1040-ES.

Does the $40,400 limit phase down at higher income?

Yes. For 2026, the reduction begins when MAGI is more than $505,000, or more than $252,500 for married filing separately. The reduced limit cannot fall below $10,000, or $5,000 for married filing separately. Thus, $40,400 is the maximum ceiling for eligible taxes, not the amount every taxpayer can deduct.

Use the 2026 IRS calculation rather than assuming the cap applies in full. The thresholds and floor are stated in Publication 505 (2026).

Which taxes count toward the SALT limit?

Eligible categories include state and local income taxes or general sales taxes, and real and personal property taxes. They share one combined limit. IRS guidance describes these categories in its itemized deductions and standard deduction FAQ.

Choose between income tax and sales tax

For the income-tax-versus-sales-tax choice, compare the eligible alternatives. IRS homeowner guidance describes an election to deduct general sales taxes instead of state and local income taxes, but that publication covers 2025 returns. Check the applicable 2026 Schedule A instructions before filing; do not assume every procedural detail in the prior-year guidance carries over. See IRS Publication 530 (2025).

How to maximize the SALT deduction you can actually use

  1. Gather records for eligible taxes paid. Separate state and local income or sales taxes from real and personal property taxes so you can calculate the combined amount accurately.
  2. Compare the income-tax and sales-tax alternatives. If the election applies to you, determine which eligible amount is larger using the 2026 instructions and your records.
  3. Apply the income-based limit. Use the 2026 MAGI threshold and phase-down rules to find your allowable ceiling; do not treat the full $40,400 as automatically available.
  4. Add your other allowable itemized deductions. The SALT deduction is only one part of Schedule A. Compare the total allowable itemized deductions with the standard deduction for your filing status.
  5. Use the instructions for the correct return year. The Schedule A instructions available here are for 2025; use the 2026 Schedule A instructions when preparing a 2026 return.

Should you itemize or take the standard deduction?

Itemizing generally makes sense when your allowable itemized deductions exceed the standard deduction for your filing status, though exceptions can require itemizing. The IRS explains the general comparison in Topic No. 501.

For tax year 2026, the standard deductions are $32,200 for married filing jointly, $16,100 for single or married filing separately, and $24,150 for head of household, according to the IRS’s 2026 inflation-adjustment announcement. These figures help frame the comparison, but your other allowable deductions and circumstances determine which method produces the larger deduction.

What to avoid when trying to increase the deduction

  • Do not assume that paying more tax or prepaying a bill will automatically increase a usable federal deduction. The cap, applicable tax-year rules, and itemization comparison still matter.
  • Do not make costly decisions—such as relocating—solely on the assumption that a larger SALT ceiling will make them worthwhile. A deduction reduces taxable income; its value depends on your tax situation.
  • Keep payment records and calculate the deduction using the instructions for the year of the return, rather than reusing prior-year Schedule A procedures.
