A leak discovered during routine maintenance on the Olympic Pipeline on Nov. 11, 2025, interrupted jet-fuel deliveries to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). Airlines responded with measures including bringing in extra fuel and planning en-route fuel stops. Those were preparations during a 2025 disruption, not evidence of an active emergency today; the sources reviewed do not establish the pipeline’s status on Oct. 8, 2026.
What happened to the Olympic Pipeline?
On Nov. 11, 2025, routine maintenance uncovered a leak on the Olympic Pipeline in Snohomish County, between Everett and the City of Snohomish. The shutdown disrupted jet-fuel transportation to SEA, which Washington state described as directly reliant on the pipeline for jet-fuel deliveries. The operator notified the state and worked with state and federal partners on containment, cleanup, and repairs. Washington Governor’s Office, Nov. 19, 2025
Contemporaneous reports captured changing conditions rather than one fixed status. ABC News reported on Nov. 16 that BP said it had achieved a partial restart and that BP and airport officials said fuel was sufficient for operations as the week began. On Nov. 19, the state still described the pipeline as offline and said there was no estimated restoration timeline. Alaska Airlines said on Nov. 25 that service was expected to resume. How did officials and airlines respond?
Airport and state measures
Beginning Nov. 12, SEA officials asked inbound airlines to arrive with full fuel where possible, a practice the state called “ferrying.” On Nov. 19, Governor Bob Ferguson declared an emergency and temporarily waived state rules limiting commercial motor-vehicle driver hours for drivers transporting jet fuel. The waiver retained safe-driving measures and was intended to support trucking deliveries to the airport while the pipeline was offline. Ferguson said, “This declaration will help the airport maintain its fuel supply while the pipeline is offline and limit disruptions to travelers.” Washington Governor’s Office, Nov. 19, 2025

Alaska Airlines’ reported steps
In its Nov. 24 update, Alaska Airlines said it was tankering extra fuel into SEA, maintaining and expanding fuel trucking, and adding a fuel stop to roughly a dozen flights per day. It said affected flights and stop locations changed daily, with the strategy focused on some transcontinental and Hawaii routes. The airline said no flights had been canceled due to fuel supply at that point. These figures and operational claims describe Alaska Airlines’ own update, not every airline’s response. Alaska Airlines, Nov. 24, 2025
On Nov. 25, Alaska said pipeline service was expected to resume, it had discontinued planned fuel stops, and it would continue reduced tankering and trucking as pipeline capacity increased toward normal. The airline said it expected no other operational impacts. That was a dated airline update, not confirmation of current pipeline or flight status. Alaska Airlines, Nov. 25, 2025

What do “tankering” and a fuel stop mean for passengers?
The two airline measures put fuel aboard at different points. Tankering means a flight carries additional fuel into SEA from an earlier point in its journey. A planned en-route stop allows the aircraft to refuel at an intermediate airport before continuing. Alaska Airlines said an added fuel stop could lengthen a route without passengers necessarily having to deplane. Whether a particular flight used either measure depended on changing daily plans. Alaska Airlines, Nov. 24–25, 2025
Will an Olympic Pipeline disruption affect your SEA flight?
The reported airline measures show how a fuel-supply constraint can affect operations, but they do not establish that a specific traveler’s flight was delayed, rerouted, or canceled. Alaska’s Nov. 24 statement said it had not canceled flights due to fuel supply at that time; its Nov. 25 update said it expected no other operational impacts as service resumed. For any trip, especially one relying on a connection or a tight schedule, check your airline’s flight-status page or app for the current itinerary and contact the airline about rebooking or assistance. The available sources do not establish an ongoing disruption or the status of an individual flight as of Oct. 8, 2026. Alaska Airlines, Nov. 24–25, 2025

What was known about the leak and its broader effects?
In a Nov. 25 statement, Senator Maria Cantwell said BP had found the leak the previous night and that two pipelines were present at the location: one carrying gasoline and one carrying jet fuel. Cantwell said BP confirmed the leak was on the gasoline pipeline, allowing the jet-fuel pipeline to restart. This is Cantwell’s account; the sources reviewed do not include a pipeline-operator or regulator investigation independently establishing the exact technical cause or final cleanup findings. Senator Maria Cantwell, Nov. 25, 2025
On Nov. 21, Cantwell wrote to BP that SEA had lost its primary jet-fuel source and estimated that 900,000 people would travel through the airport for Thanksgiving. That number was her forward-looking estimate, not a verified final passenger count. Her letter also raised concern about potential gasoline-price increases; it does not establish that prices actually rose. The sources reviewed do not provide a reliable figure for fuel reserves, pipeline capacity, the amount spilled, or final economic effects. Senator Maria Cantwell, Nov. 21, 2025
