This ranking uses worldwide cumulative gross for films released in 2024, as listed on Box Office Mojo’s 2024 worldwide chart. It is not a ranking of only the money each film earned during the 2024 calendar year.

Why “highest-grossing in 2024” can mean two things
A movie’s cumulative worldwide gross and its earnings during a particular calendar year answer different questions. The table ranks films released in 2024 by their cumulative worldwide totals, including money earned outside that calendar year where reflected in the chart.
The Numbers’ 2024 top-grossing chart instead ranks films by what they earned during the 2024 calendar year and can include movies first released earlier. On that measure, it listed Inside Out 2 at $652,980,194, Deadpool & Wolverine at $636,745,858, and Wicked at $432,943,285. Those calendar-year figures are not the cumulative worldwide grosses in the table.

What made the 2024 box office notable
Inside Out 2 set a nominal-dollar animation milestone
In its January 2, 2025 year-end report, Disney said Inside Out 2 was the year’s No. 1 global, domestic, and international release, with a global gross of $1.7 billion. Disney also called it the No. 1 animated film globally at that time. The Associated Press likewise described it as the biggest animated film of all time without adjusting for inflation. These are historical records in nominal dollars, not inflation-adjusted comparisons.
Family films and franchises drew a large share of moviegoing
The Associated Press, citing Comscore, reported that a group of PG-rated family films named in its year-end story—including Despicable Me 4, Moana 2, Wicked, Kung Fu Panda 4, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Mufasa, and The Wild Robot—grossed more than $2.9 billion in 2024, or around 33% of annual box office. That industry-wide annual statistic has a different scope and time measure from the cumulative worldwide ranking above. The AP also noted that sequels and franchises dominated the year’s top ten.

Theatrical releases and a dependable schedule mattered
In the AP’s year-end analysis, Daniel Loria of The Boxoffice Company said, “It’s a different industry when Disney commits to theatrical releases.” Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian described the business this way: “It’s an unpredictable business but it thrives on stability.” These observations speak to the broader release calendar and industry conditions, not to a single film’s box-office performance.
