2024 Tax Refund Still Hasn’t Arrived? How to Track It

If you’re waiting for a U.S. federal refund from a 2024 individual income-tax return, check the IRS’s Where’s My Refund? tracker. In 2026, 2024 is the tax year—not the year you filed. For a prior-year return, the IRS says status is generally available 3 days after e-filing or 4 weeks after mailing. Those are lookup windows, not delivery promises.

How to check your 2024 federal refund

  1. Use the return for tax year 2024. The year requested by the tracker is the tax year shown on your return, not the calendar year you filed it.
  2. Wait for the lookup window. The IRS generally makes prior-year e-filed return status available after 3 days. For a mailed return, allow 4 weeks before checking.
  3. Open Where’s My Refund? Enter your SSN or ITIN, filing status, exact refund amount in whole dollars, and tax year. Use the filing status and amount from the return as filed.
  4. Check at most once a day. Status generally updates overnight, so repeated checks during the same day are unlikely to show anything new.

You can also view refund status in an IRS Online Account, use the IRS mobile app, or call the automated refund hotline at 800-829-1954. The IRS’s April 21, 2026 Tax Tip 2026-33 also describes an email-notification option for status changes.

What each IRS refund status means

  • Return Received: The IRS received your return. This does not mean the refund has been approved or issued.
  • Refund Approved: The IRS has processed and approved the refund. The tracker provides a personalized payment date when available.
  • Refund Sent: The IRS issued the payment. A direct deposit may still need time to post at your bank or credit union; a mailed check needs time to arrive.

Why a 2024 refund may be taking longer

The IRS says most refunds are issued in fewer than 21 days, but that is not a deadline for every return. A return may take longer if it needs a correction or further review. The IRS lists missing signatures, math errors, additional review of an Additional Child Tax Credit claim, amended returns, and injured-spouse requests among circumstances that can delay processing.

If your return claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit, federal law holds refunds until mid-February to help prevent fraud. That seasonal hold alone does not mean the return has a problem.

The tracker may show a delay or ask you to take action without explaining every internal processing step. If the IRS sends you a letter or notice, follow its specific instructions and response deadline rather than guessing from a general status message.

If you amended your 2024 return

Use Where’s My Amended Return? for Form 1040-X; an amended return does not appear in the original-return tracker. The IRS says to allow up to 3 weeks after filing for it to appear. Processing generally takes 8 to 12 weeks and can take up to 16 weeks, according to the Instructions for Form 1040-X, December 2025. You can also call 866-464-2050.

The amended-return tracker shows one of three statuses:

  • Received: The IRS has received the amended return.
  • Adjusted: The IRS made an adjustment to the account.
  • Completed: Processing is complete.

Some amended returns do not appear in the tool, including certain injured-spouse claims, returns handled by specialized units, and some cases involving identity theft or fraud. The IRS says it will contact you if it needs more information. Do not send a duplicate amended return solely because the tracker has not updated.

If the IRS says “Refund Sent” but you have no payment

First confirm the issue date and payment method in Where’s My Refund? or your IRS account. For a direct deposit, allow your financial institution time to post the funds. For a mailed check, the IRS generally allows a replacement-check claim when more than 28 days have passed since the mailing date.

The IRS refund-trace route for a missing mailed check depends on your filing status:

  • Single, married filing separately, or head of household: For a current-year refund, start a trace through the tracker or IRS app, or call 800-829-1954.
  • Married filing jointly: Call 800-829-1040 or submit Form 3911.

Have your tax return available. If the check was not cashed, the IRS can cancel it and issue another. If it was cashed, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends a claim package and reviews the claim. See the IRS refund guidance for the trace process.

If your refund is smaller than expected

A federal refund can be reduced to pay certain past-due obligations, including child support, debts to federal agencies, state income tax, or state unemployment compensation. You should receive an offset notice identifying the original refund, the amount applied, and the agency that received the payment. Direct questions about the debt or calculation as instructed on that notice. If no notice arrived, the IRS lists the Treasury Offset Program call center at 800-304-3107.

If you filed jointly and your share of the refund was applied to a debt owed only by your spouse, you may qualify to seek your share with Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation. The form can be filed with the return electronically or by mail. Injured-spouse relief is different from innocent-spouse relief, which concerns responsibility for tax reported on a joint return.

Federal and state refunds use different trackers

This process covers U.S. federal individual income-tax refunds. It cannot identify the status or processing time of a state refund. For a state return, use the official tracker provided by that state’s revenue agency.
