Its key buying distinction is whether a bike has ABS; Kawasaki’s original U.S. MSRP ranged from $4,999 for the 2018 standard model to $5,799 for a 2022 ABS trim. Those figures are historical list prices—not current used-market values or out-the-door costs. The overview below covers performance, specifications, model-year price context, and where to view year-specific photos.
How the Ninja 400 performs
Kawasaki’s 2017 U.S. launch release describes a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 399cc parallel twin with a six-speed transmission and an assist-and-slipper clutch. The engine’s bore and stroke are 70.0 mm by 51.8 mm, with an 11.5:1 compression ratio. The release describes the clutch as reducing lever effort and helping limit rear-wheel hopping during excessive engine braking. Kawasaki’s 2018 launch information gives the model’s original configuration and technical details.
The chassis details in that release include a trellis frame, 53.9-inch wheelbase, 41 mm front fork, adjustable rear preload, and a 310 mm front disc. ABS was available on designated versions, not every Ninja 400. These are launch-era specifications; equipment can vary by trim and market.
Published output figures
Cycle World’s 2020 buyer’s guide lists claimed torque of 28.0 lb-ft at 8,000 rpm and marks horsepower as “N/A.” That is the guide’s specification table, not a Kawasaki horsepower claim. The reviewed Kawasaki launch material does not state an exact horsepower rating, so an exact figure is not established by these sources. Cycle World’s 2020 Ninja 400 buyer’s guide includes the torque figure and model photos.

2022 dimensions and practical specifications
Kawasaki’s U.S. 2022 specification sheet lists a 30.9-inch seat height, 3.7-gallon fuel capacity, and 366-pound curb weight for its listed configuration. It gives tire sizes of 110/70-17 at the front and 150/60-17 at the rear, along with a 399cc DOHC parallel twin and six-speed transmission. These are 2022 U.S. figures; do not assume every trim or other market has identical specifications. Kawasaki’s 2022 U.S. specification sheet is the reference for these values.
Historical U.S. MSRP by model year
Kawasaki’s original prices help put a used listing in context, but they are not a valuation for a motorcycle today. MSRP excludes any dealer charges, taxes, registration, or transaction-specific costs. Current used prices were not established by the cited sources and depend on location, mileage, condition, title history, service records, modifications, and trim.

ABS, trims, and model-year differences
The launch lineup included standard, ABS, ABS KRT Edition, and ABS SE configurations. The ABS designation is the important equipment distinction in the cited U.S. material: standard versions were offered without ABS, while the named ABS versions include it. The original launch release lists these 2018 colors:
- Standard: Candy Plasma Blue and Metallic Spark Black.
- ABS: Metallic Spark Black.
- ABS KRT Edition: Lime Green/Ebony.
- ABS SE: Pearl Solar Yellow/Pearl Storm Grey/Ebony.
Colors and trim availability are model-year-specific. Cycle World’s 2020 guide characterizes changes since introduction as colorways, but the available sources do not establish a complete year-by-year equipment audit for 2018 through 2022. For a particular used motorcycle, check its model-year documentation and the actual equipment rather than assuming every detail stayed unchanged.

Manuals, maintenance items, and fitment

Kawasaki’s shop pages list a Ninja 400/Z400 oil change kit and a drive-chain kit; the oil change kit result identifies Ninja 400 fitment for model years 2018–2022. The launch release also names accessory categories such as frame sliders, a tank pad, radiator trim, an extended-reach seat, a tall windscreen, an Akrapovic slip-on muffler, a seat cowl, a DC power outlet, and motorcycle covers. Before buying a part or accessory, confirm the live listing’s fitment against the motorcycle’s exact year, model code, ABS status, and market.
