The organizations employed more than 5,000 people. The figure describes employers associated with the Foundation’s accreditation scheme—not every UK employer using shorter hours, and not a national census.
How many UK companies have adopted a four-day week?
The 4 Day Week Foundation announced the milestone on 27 January 2025. ITV News reported that 59 of the 200 companies were in London. The Foundation-reported organizations collectively employed more than 5,000 people; that is the reach of this accredited group, not a count of everyone in the UK working shorter weeks. ITV News reported the figures and announcement.
The number should be read as a dated milestone, not as a current October 2026 total: a newer authoritative total was not established. Nor does it show that only 200 UK employers have adopted a shorter week. It counts organizations in the Foundation’s accreditation context.
What counts as a four-day week under the accreditation standards?
The term can mean a reduction in weekly hours rather than a strict schedule of work on exactly four calendar days. UNISON’s guide, last updated in February 2025, describes two Foundation employer standards:

These are the standards as described in UNISON’s four-day-week bargaining guide. For the reported accredited group, both standards preserve pay while setting a weekly-hours ceiling; Gold explicitly allows the hours to be spread across five days.

These are counts in that report, not a complete breakdown of all UK employers with a four-day week. Workplace Journal’s report provides the sector figures.
What do the reported trial outcomes show?
A 2026 GMB agenda document summarizes results from a six-month trial: 71% of employees reportedly experienced lower burnout, likelihood of quitting reportedly fell by 57%, and sick days reportedly decreased by 65%. The document also says the vast majority of participating companies were satisfied that performance and productivity had been maintained. These are figures about the trial as summarized in a secondary account; they are not measured outcomes for every employer in the 200-plus accredited group. What the milestone does—and does not—say about workers
The Foundation’s campaign director, Joe Ryle, told ITV News: “With 50% more free time, a four-day week gives people the freedom to live happier, more fulfilling lives.” That is a campaign statement, not an independently measured outcome for all employees. Ryle also described the five-day week as “invented 100 years ago” and “no longer fit for purpose”; that historical framing is advocacy attributed to him, rather than a verified chronology.
For workers assessing a job or proposed schedule, the practical details matter more than the label: the weekly hours, which days or hours are required, whether pay is unchanged, and how the employer defines its arrangement. The accreditation milestone establishes that a sizable group of employers met the Foundation-associated standards described above; it does not establish a universal effect on take-home pay, wellbeing, or productivity.
