In Oliver Obel’s June 2, 2025 ranking, Chelsea had the highest reported net spend over “the last five seasons,” at £674 million. Manchester United ranked second at £597 million, followed by Arsenal at £550 million. The list covers 20 clubs across six countries, but its source does not define the exact seasons or explain all fee calculations, so treat it as a dated snapshot rather than a current, universally comparable ranking.

What the ranking tells you—and what it does not
The top three are Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal. English clubs account for 11 of the 20 entries, but the ranking is not limited to the Premier League: it also includes clubs from Spain, Italy, Germany, France and Saudi Arabia.

A high net-spend figure indicates a large reported gap between transfer outlay and transfer income over the period being counted. On its own, it does not establish a club’s financial health, accounting profit, transfer efficiency or sporting success. Those questions require other information, such as player wages, contract amortisation, operating income and results on the pitch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why five-season net-spend rankings can differ
The Lente Desportiva article does not specify the exact season boundaries, whether add-ons are included, how loans or undisclosed fees are handled, or which transfer-fee database underlies the totals. Those choices can change both a club’s figure and its position. The ranking should therefore be read as that article’s reported snapshot, not as a definitive calculation that can be directly matched to every other dataset.

A separate example illustrates the effect of scope. In its February 8, 2023 Weekly Post 408, CIES Football Observatory described net spending “including add-ons” over its own five-season period among the 100 clubs with the highest monetary trade volume. It reported deficits of €749 million for Chelsea, €670 million for Manchester United and €544 million for Arsenal. These euro figures are not directly comparable with the 2025 pound ranking: the dates, currencies and stated sample differ.
When comparing net-spend lists, check the period, currency and conversion date, the clubs included, gross transfer purchases and sales income, and the treatment of add-ons, loans and undisclosed fees. Also check whether the measure covers transfer fees alone or a broader accounting concept. A transfer-fee net-spend figure is not the same as accounting profit or total squad cost.
