Edible souvenirs that travel well
Tokyo Banana and regional Kit Kats
Tokyo Banana is an easy coworker or family gift because it is recognizable and sold in convenient boxes. Regional and seasonal Kit Kats are easier to divide among several recipients. Buy food late in the trip, check best-before dates and keep chocolate away from heat.
Royce’ nama chocolate
This is the premium choice among the sweets listed here. Its soft texture makes cooling and short transport important; ask the shop about an ice pack and follow the storage instructions.
Senbei and matcha
Senbei tins or wrapped assortments are sturdier than soft sweets. Matcha powder is compact and works for both traditional tea and baking, but confirm your destination’s food-import rules.

Furoshiki, sensu and tenugui
These textiles and folding fans deliver Japanese character without taking much luggage space. A furoshiki can later wrap bottles, lunches or gifts; a tenugui works as a towel, cloth or wall decoration. Finer sensu fans cost more because of materials and workmanship.
Chopsticks, ceramics and daruma
Lacquered chopsticks are among the safest useful gifts. Ceramic cups and dishes are more distinctive but need clothing or bubble wrap around them. A daruma adds symbolic value; choose a small one if suitcase space is tight.

Useful purchases for the home and kitchen
Kitchen knives
Kappabashi is the natural district for knives and other kitchenware. Everyday blades commonly fall around ¥5,000–¥15,000, while artisan work can be substantially higher. Ask about sharpening, steel, care and whether the retailer can ship legally. Verify airline, import and destination laws before carrying or sending any knife.
Stationery and craft supplies
Loft, Hands and Ginza’s Itoya are strong starting points for pens, notebooks, washi tape and specialist craft materials. These are compact gifts for coworkers and do not create the fragility or customs issues of food and ceramics.

- ✓ Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha from Japan – Our Organic First Spring Blend Matcha is what we recommend to beginners looking for a decent, all rounded organic ceremonial grade matcha that provides good value for the price.
- ✓ Mild, Mellow Taste Without Any Bitterness – A smooth yet mellow taste with notes of raw cacao makes this an excellent blend of matcha for matcha lattes, matcha teas or usucha. It has virtually no unpleasant bitterness or astringency.
- ✓ Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha - Certified organic by JAS (recognised by USDA). Made from the First Harvest tea leaves from the hilly Kirishima region just outside of Kagoshima city. The tea plants are shade grown, processed into tencha at modern facilities and only ground into matcha powder right before it leaves Japan for the USA.
- ✓ Improve Your Focus, Boost Energy Without Coffee – Greatly increase your focus and energy by drinking Naoki Matcha. Unlike the typical caffeine rush from coffee, the amino acid L-theanine in Naoki Matcha slowly releases the caffeine which helps to relax the mind and body while providing a steady boost of energy for up to 6 hours.
- ✓ Proudly Made In Kagoshima - Uji and Kyoto may be the spiritual homes of matcha, but Kagoshima is rapidly growing as a producer of quality matcha. The volcanic soil in Kagoshima has a unique terroir and the tea estates’ there are willing to depart from tradition to create bold new tastes and flavors.

How to choose what is actually worth buying
- Portability: flat textiles and packaged snacks beat fragile ceramics when luggage space is limited.
- Shelf life: buy fresh sweets near departure and choose senbei or dry matcha for longer journeys.
- Usefulness: stationery, chopsticks, skincare and backpacks are safer gifts when you do not know a recipient’s tastes.
- Authenticity: use official character stores and established retailers for licensed goods.
- Price tier: do not compare a ¥300 snack with a ¥30,000 artisan knife using the same value test.
- Restrictions: liquids, food, batteries, blades and fragile goods require destination-specific checks.
Tax-free shopping and packing rules for visitors
Qualifying visitors can use consumption-tax exemption procedures at participating department stores, appliance stores, discount stores and other retailers. Keep your passport available and ask how the shop handles general goods versus consumables. If a retailer seals tax-free consumables, do not open them before departure unless the retailer tells you otherwise.
GO TOKYO says a new system begins November 1, 2026: visitors will pay tax-inclusive prices and receive a refund after customs processing at departure. Until that change takes effect, follow the procedure shown by the participating retailer.
JNTO states that, as of April 1, 2025, tax-free shopping does not apply when purchasers send items overseas through international parcels. In practice, carrying eligible goods out yourself and mailing them are not interchangeable tax treatments. Confirm current rules at the point of sale and at departure.
