The headline figure refers to potential new variable-object detections—not 1.5 million individually confirmed, mysterious types of space object.
What did Matteo Paz discover?
Paz’s project, called VarWISE, examined how the infrared brightness of sources changed over time in NEOWISE observations. Caltech/IPAC says his algorithm flagged and classified 1.5 million potential new objects. Society for Science describes the project as a catalog of 1.9 million infrared variable objects, including 1.5 million new discoveries. Those figures describe related but distinct counts: the total catalog and the new entries within it. (Caltech/IPAC; Society for Science)
“Mysterious” makes a catchy headline, but the finding is more specific: the catalog contains sources whose measured infrared brightness varies. Such changes can help scientists study phenomena including supermassive black holes, newborn stars, and supernovae. The available project descriptions do not establish that every entry is a confirmed example of any one of those categories.
How did he use NEOWISE data?
Paz analyzed an existing archive rather than discovering the objects by looking through a telescope. NEOWISE repeatedly measured the sky in infrared light; those observations also recorded brightness changes in distant sources. Paz developed a machine-learning algorithm, identified by Society for Science as VARnet, to detect subtle differences across the measurements and sort variable sources.

The archive’s scale was substantial: Caltech/IPAC’s account says it contained nearly 200 billion rows of detections and drew on more than 10 years of sky scanning. Paz worked with Davy Kirkpatrick, an IPAC senior scientist, who mentored the project. The work began after Paz attended Caltech’s Planet Finder Academy in 2022; he started the research through a six-week program in 2023 and continued collaborating in 2024. Caltech/IPAC reports that he published a single-author, peer-reviewed paper.
What was NEOWISE, and why use its archive?
NASA’s WISE spacecraft launched in December 2009 to survey the sky in infrared. The later NEOWISE project focused on near-Earth objects, including asteroids and comets. Its repeated observations also made it possible to track changing infrared brightness in other sources. (NASA JPL’s NEOWISE mission summary)

What the 1.5 million figure does—and does not—mean
- It means: Paz’s analysis flagged 1.5 million potential new variable objects, while Society for Science describes 1.5 million new discoveries within a 1.9 million-object variable-source catalog.
- It does not mean: 1.5 million newly verified species, planets, black holes, or other single object class.
- It does not describe: a new telescope launch or a visual sweep by Paz. The project analyzed repeated measurements already collected by NEOWISE.
