18 Best Tech Gifts for Kids (2023): What Still Makes Sense in 2026

The best tech gift for a child depends on age, use case, ecosystem, privacy, supervision, and recurring cost. Here is what remains useful from the 2023 list—and what needs updating.

Updated for 2026: WIRED’s original November 2023 gift guide included 18 recommendations, but several models, prices, and services have changed. The best choice depends less on a child’s age label than on what they will actually do with the device, how much supervision it needs, whether it works with your family’s phones, and what it costs after the initial purchase.

This guide keeps the original categories while separating current buying ideas from products that are now outdated, difficult to verify, or better treated as used and refurbished options. Some picks are tech-adjacent gifts—such as bikes, binoculars, and backpacks—that support independence or exploration rather than functioning as electronics.

Quick picks

Best for Gift type Main advantage Main drawback
Younger children Yoto Player Physical cards and screen-free audio Cards and some features cost extra; Wi-Fi is important
Creative play Current base iPad Broad app and accessory support Higher cost and more parental setup
Reading Kindle Kids Fewer distractions than a tablet Limited to reading-focused use
iPhone families Apple Watch SE 3 with Apple Watch for Kids Communication without handing over a full smartphone Requires GPS + Cellular, an iPhone household, and a cellular plan
Gaming Nintendo Switch Lite Portable access to a large game library It cannot dock to a television
No-subscription households Record player, headphones, binoculars, or a physical game Useful without a content or cellular plan Less connected functionality
Outdoor independence Binoculars or a properly sized bike Encourages exploration away from screens Not conventional electronics

Do not compare these gifts by price alone. A speaker, smartwatch, tablet, and bicycle solve entirely different problems. The useful comparison is total cost, supervision, privacy, compatibility, and the likelihood that the child will keep using the gift.

1. Yoto Player: best screen-free audio gift

The current Yoto Player 3rd Generation is positioned for children ages 3–12+, using physical cards rather than a conventional touchscreen. Children can listen to stories, music, podcasts, and audiobooks through tactile controls.

It is a strong choice for preschool and early-elementary children who want control without unrestricted web access. The trade-off is the ecosystem: cards can be lost, desired content may cost extra, and parents must check that the titles they want are available in their country. Normal use depends on Wi-Fi, although content can be downloaded for offline listening. Do that before travel rather than assuming the player is completely offline. WIRED also described the sound quality of its tested unit as adequate rather than exceptional.

2. BuddyPhones or JBL children’s headphones

Children’s headphones can be practical for travel, schoolwork, and shared homes. The 2023 guide included BuddyPhones Cosmos+ and discussed the JBL Jr 460NC, including its claimed under-85-decibel limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat volume limiting as one feature—not proof that any listening duration is harmless. Check whether the limit applies in both Bluetooth and wired modes, whether parents can disable it, how well the headphones fit, and whether replacement parts are available. Noise cancellation can make travel easier, but it should not create a false sense that loud listening is safe or prevent a child from hearing caregivers, traffic, or school instructions.

3. Victrola Re-Spin Bluetooth suitcase record player

A record player is a niche but appealing older-child gift for families that want music without another app ecosystem. The Victrola Re-Spin can be considered as an analog-tech alternative, but verify official availability and replacement-stylus information before buying.

It is best for supervised listening and collecting physical records, not for a child who needs portability, streaming, or a low-maintenance device. Records and replacement components become part of the long-term cost.

4. Apple Watch SE: best phone alternative for iPhone families

The 2023 recommendation was the Apple Watch SE (2022). In 2026, consider the current Apple Watch SE generation or a carefully inspected used model instead. Apple’s current buying page lists US starting prices of $249 for GPS and $299 for GPS + Cellular; prices and carrier charges can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Watch for Kids requires a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch and lets an iPhone owner set up a watch for a family member who does not have an iPhone. Features include approved contacts, restrictions, and location sharing. A compatible carrier plan is still required.

Not just a toy, but a passport to lifelong curiosity.

This is a sensible intermediary step when a child needs limited communication or location features but is not ready for a smartphone. It is a poor fit for Android households, schools that prohibit wearables, or children who will not reliably charge a small device. Location sharing also creates a privacy decision: configure only the contacts and features the family genuinely needs.

5. Garmin Bounce

Garmin Bounce remains a dedicated kids’ GPS smartwatch category to investigate. Confirm the current model, supported country, carrier or service plan, activation terms, and cancellation policy before purchase.

It can appeal to families that want a purpose-built watch rather than Apple’s broader ecosystem. Its disadvantages are the same ones that affect most cellular children’s watches: recurring service costs, charging, imperfect location accuracy indoors or in dense areas, and dependence on a parent-managed account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Xplora kids’ watches

Xplora offers a dedicated kids’ watch ecosystem, but its models and plans change frequently. Compare the current device, approved-contact rules, messaging and camera functions, supported carrier, monthly cost, and data policies.

A dedicated watch is not automatically more private or secure because it is marketed for children. Before activating it, review location retention, account recovery, contact whitelists, school mode, software updates, and what happens if the subscription ends.

7. Amazon Echo Pop Kids

The Echo Pop Kids was one of the 2023 recommendations. Verify that the exact model remains sold and supported through Amazon’s current listing.

A smart speaker can be inexpensive and useful for music, timers, questions, and routines, but it places a microphone and cloud voice-assistant service in the home. Consider accidental purchases, unsuitable answers, advertising, subscription dependence, and whether the speaker will be placed in a bedroom or other private area. Configure purchasing restrictions, review voice-history controls, and do not assume a child-focused edition eliminates these concerns.

8. PlayShifu Tacto Chess

PlayShifu Tacto Chess combines physical pieces with tablet gameplay. It can be a good fit for a child who enjoys tactile play but benefits from guided digital instruction.

Check the current app, supported tablet list, and account requirements at PlayShifu. Compatibility matters: WIRED found the setup fiddly with an iPad mini and preferred a full-size iPad. This is not a good purchase if the household lacks a compatible tablet or the child dislikes setup friction.

9. The current base iPad

The 2023 article recommended the ninth-generation iPad. That is now an older model. Apple’s current base iPad page identifies an 11-inch model with an A16 chip and 128 GB of starting storage. See Apple’s current iPad page for the live configuration.

An iPad is the most flexible choice for creative apps, video calls, games, drawing, and specialized software. It supports Apple Pencil USB-C, first-generation Apple Pencil, and Magic Keyboard Folio. That flexibility is also the drawback: parents must configure Screen Time, app approvals, purchases, accounts, browser access, and communication settings. Budget for a protective case and possibly an accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Amazon Fire Kids tablet

The Fire HD 10 Kids Pro appeared in the original list. Verify the exact current generation, storage, included case, warranty, and Kids+ subscription term before ordering. Amazon’s children’s tablets can be attractive for younger users because the bundle and content-management system are relatively contained.

They are less suitable when a child needs a specialized app or a broad app ecosystem. WIRED described moving from Fire to iPad when a child wanted more specific software. The key question is: will this child need apps outside Amazon’s ecosystem within the next two years? If yes, the cheaper initial purchase may not be the cheaper long-term choice.

11. Kindle Kids

Kindle Kids is a strong option for a reluctant reader or a child who is distracted by games and video on tablets. Verify the current bundle, storage, warranty, Kids+ term, and live price on the current Kindle Kids listing.

It is best for reading-focused children and travel. It is a poor fit if the child needs color apps, general web access, video calls, or tablet-based accessibility tools. Check whether the chosen model’s screen, lighting, text-size options, and accessibility settings suit the child.

12. Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook

A Chromebook can be a practical elementary-school, tween, or teen gift when the child’s school already uses ChromeOS or Google Workspace. The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook from the 2023 list should be checked for ChromeOS update support, current configuration, keyboard inclusion, battery condition if refurbished, and compatibility with required school applications.

Ask the school before buying. Some schools require specific management policies, testing software, ports, or Windows-only applications. A Chromebook is often excellent for browser-based schoolwork but may be frustrating for specialized creative software.

13. Nintendo Switch Lite

Nintendo’s official Switch Lite page is the correct source for current colors, specifications, compatibility, warranty, and availability. The Switch Lite is handheld-only and cannot dock to a television.

It suits a child who primarily plays independently or on the go. Choose a regular Switch instead if the gift is meant for TV play or family multiplayer. Budget separately for games, a case, screen protection, and any online subscription. Configure parental controls on the correct Nintendo account, and remember that analog-stick wear and repairability matter over several years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Google Pixel 6a: used or refurbished only

The Pixel 6a was the original kids’ phone recommendation, but it should not be presented as a current new-phone choice without up-to-date support documentation. It may still be considered as a used or refurbished device only after checking software-support status, battery health, activation condition, warranty, and return rights.

A phone gives a child substantially more access than a watch: browsers, messaging, apps, cameras, games, and potentially social media. Use a child account, contact rules, purchase approval, downtime, location settings, and a family agreement. Compare the total cost of the handset, case, replacement screen, and cellular plan.

15. Nocs Standard Issue 8×25 binoculars

Compact binoculars are not child-specific hardware, but they fit the original guide’s broader idea of technology that encourages exploration. The Nocs Standard Issue 8×25 can suit elementary-school children, tweens, and adults who want a portable outdoor gift.

Check fit, weight, grip, and whether the child can adjust the focus. Binoculars work offline and have no subscription, but they are valuable only if the child has an activity—birding, hiking, sports, or stargazing—that makes them useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

16. Woom 4 bike

The Woom 4 was another tech-adjacent recommendation. A properly sized bike can support independence more directly than many electronic gifts, but it is not a conventional tech product. Verify current sizing, model, price, helmet requirements, and return policy at Woom.

It’s unique, interactive, and teaches kids the value of saving while making it feel like a game. Bonus points: it keeps their treasure stash safe from sneaky siblings! (Manufacturer Minimum Required Age 36 Months)

Do not buy solely from an age range. Measure the child, consider growth, and include a correctly fitted helmet and basic maintenance. A costly bike is poor value if the child is close to outgrowing it or does not enjoy riding.

17. Pottery Barn Kids rolling backpack

A rolling backpack belongs in a tech-adjacent section rather than a strict electronics list. It can help a child carry a tablet, Chromebook, books, or headphones, but check school rules, wheel durability, handle height, weight, and whether rolling luggage is practical on stairs.

Do not let the “tech gift” label obscure the financial question: a simpler, durable backpack may provide the same utility at lower cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

18. Health and comfort accessories

The original guide also included Happy Masks Pro Series masks and the Luna Kids weighted blanket. These should not be treated like ordinary gadgets. Keep masks in a gift guide only when there is a clear current need and evidence for any performance claim.

For a weighted blanket, do not imply treatment for anxiety, mood disorders, or sleep disorders. A child must be able to move out from under it independently. Consult a medical professional when a sleep, emotional, or developmental disorder is suspected, and follow current safety guidance rather than relying on a product listing.

Tablet decision: iPad or Fire Kids?

Choose an iPad when… Choose a Fire Kids tablet when…
The child needs specialized or broad apps The family wants a more contained content ecosystem
Creative work, video calls, or Apple accessories matter The child is younger and mainly uses curated entertainment
The family already uses Apple services A bundled case and Kids+ offer are valuable
You expect the device to remain useful for several years You accept possible subscription dependence and app limitations

Smartwatch or phone?

Smartwatch advantages Smartwatch disadvantages
Approved contacts and limited communication Requires charging and usually cellular service
Less web and social-media access Small interface and limited apps
Can support location sharing Location data creates privacy implications
May be harder to misplace than a phone Depends on a parent phone, carrier, or ecosystem

A watch is best viewed as a controlled communication step, not a universal replacement for a phone. Check carrier support, school rules, contact setup, battery habits, and the family’s comfort with location tracking.

What every parent should check before buying

  1. Age and maturity: Manufacturer age guidance is only a starting point. Consider reading ability, impulse control, charging responsibility, and comfort with independent use.
  2. Household ecosystem: Apple Watch for Kids requires an iPhone owner; Chromebooks may be ideal for Google-based schools; Fire tablets are tied more closely to Amazon’s content system.
  3. Recurring cost: Add cellular service, content subscriptions, replacement cards, games, accessories, proprietary chargers, warranty coverage, and accidental-damage protection.
  4. Privacy: Review microphones, cameras, location history, voice recordings, advertising, third-party sharing, account ownership, and deletion controls.
  5. Offline operation: Ask exactly what works without Wi-Fi, a phone, or cellular service. A Yoto player may need downloaded content for offline playback; a GPS watch may lose key functions without service.
  6. Security and support: Confirm updates, default-password changes, account recovery, warranty, and whether the company still supports the product.
  7. School rules: Schools may prohibit phones, watches, cameras, or connected devices during the day.
  8. Used-device checks: Confirm battery health, activation-lock removal, factory reset, software support, charger condition, warranty, return period, and seller reputation.
  9. Actual use: The best gift is the one the child will use repeatedly—not necessarily the one with the longest feature list.

Best choices by situation

  • For a preschooler: Yoto Player, durable volume-limited headphones, binoculars, or a simple physical audio gift.
  • For an elementary-school child: a Fire Kids tablet for contained entertainment, an iPad for broader creative use, or a Switch Lite for supervised gaming.
  • For a tween: Kindle Kids, Chromebook, Switch Lite, or a carefully controlled smartwatch.
  • For a teenager: prioritize a supported general-purpose device, repairability, privacy, account ownership, school compatibility, and long-term value over “kid” branding.
  • For an iPhone household: Apple Watch SE 3 with Apple Watch for Kids, provided the carrier and school support it.
  • For an Android household: compare Garmin Bounce, Xplora, or a controlled phone; Apple Watch for Kids is generally a poor fit.
  • For travel: Kindle Kids, Yoto with content downloaded in advance, headphones, or Switch Lite.
  • For a child not ready for a phone: begin with a screen-free player or evaluate a limited-contact watch, not a full smartphone by default.
  • For no subscription: binoculars, a record player, headphones, a supported e-reader without optional content services, or outdoor gear.

Historical price warning

The 2023 article listed prices including $80 headphones, a $110 Yoto Player, a $249 Apple Watch SE (2022), a $330 Pixel 6a, a $329 ninth-generation iPad, and a $229 Switch Lite. Those figures are historical signals, not current prices. Confirm the exact model, country, configuration, sale status, warranty, and recurring fees before purchase. For example, Apple’s current Apple Watch SE page lists US starting prices of $249 for GPS and $299 for GPS + Cellular, before carrier charges.

The original WIRED guide is useful as a snapshot of 2023 recommendations, but its personal experiences should not be treated as universal evidence. Product names, software support, subscriptions, and availability change quickly—especially for children’s tablets, GPS watches, and voice assistants.
